We cleared space just for the 3rd wave of free agency?

Tired of sitting around hearing us complain because this team signed this player, and we could have gotten that player. Let's go!!!

Earlier you started a thread about how you don't want us to burn up the cap like the Ram. Now you start another thread saying want us to go, spend, go.

Are you just trying to launch a bunch of threads and stir the drink?

Let’s be honest- They don’t know what they’re doing.

The Cowboys have a good regular season record over the past decade, so it's flat untrue to say they don't know about roster construction and the cap.

They absolutely are not ignorant or completely incompetent. But the Jones's have just enough perpetual blind spots and dysfunctional habits like disempowering their head coaches (which prevents them from hiring the very best coaches).

I think we've known that for a long time. At first after Jimmy left, it was Jerry not putting enough into the draft (I mean, he put his friend Larry Lacewell in charge of it) and leaning heavily on throwing top dollar at free agency. That strategy didn't work because you can't build a team just through free agency, you've got to draft well. Parcells got Jerry finally flipped around on the draft, but then they had some high-dollar free agent failures and decided that all high-dollar free agents aren't worth the money. So our front office handicaps the team one way or the other.

If we had drafted well when Jerry was wildcatting in free agency, maybe we would have at least been to a championship game since the house the Jimmy built collapsed. Or if we'd make better use of free agency now that we understand the importance of the draft, maybe we would have even sniffed a Super Bowl by now. But no, incompetence reins at the top of this franchise and it's proven impossible to overcome.

Or do we get into it earlier this year? Tired of sitting around hearing us complain because this team signed this player, and we could have gotten that player. Let's go!!!
I think we were clearing room for OBJ.

He is going to be the "splash" Jerry has teased us about. They would have signed him during the season if he was healthy enough to play, so why would they not sign him now after he is recovered or at least recovered enough to have a tryout for all the NFL scouts.

If you have a capable QB and you draft well, you can have some success. The comment about not knowing what they are doing has to do with their off season approach.

I'm not saying the Jones boys are amateurs, or don't know what they're doing, but if they were, what would they do differently? The answer is nothing. This is why some people question if they know what they're doing. It's an off season approach that takes zero risk. We can all come to our own conclusions as to why they do this.

Ok let's compromise and agree they are 99% incompetent.

I think Cowboys will surprise us, I look for them to jump in the 1st few days of FA
Although history says otherwise, me too. Jerry isn't Happy with all of the criticism he has gotten for “doing nothing” with regards to impact free agents the past decade and has become defensive when called out on it. That means Jerry is going to sign a big time free agent or make a splash trade. This is going to be one of those times where he tells Stephen to shut up and go sit in the corner. Jerry is in headline grabbing mode this off-season so don’t be surprised if it is two big time moves.

we like our guys.

you realize the cowboys have been in bottom 3 in cash spending over the past 5 years. but, at the same time we are the #1 valued franchise in all of sports. so there is that

I have to say the last few years we’ve done solid in FA with bargain guys
Low risk and high reward
I think we add a WR and maybe a LB in FA, possible a CB too
It’s not gonna please every fan but if the help the team that’s what matters
They aren’t gonna go buy a 20 mil DT which is what some want but they have been solid at adding guys that out played their contracts

they cleared space to get under the cap by deadline.
No telling what they do now lol.

Good article that shows the importance of using both well. Our problem when we were spending money on outside free agents was that we weren't always spending it well. Brandon Carr was the straw that broke the Joneses' back, but they drew the wrong conclusion from it. The conclusion should have been that just because a player is the best free agent available at a position doesn't mean he's the best free agent available. The free agent corner class that year was weak, which meant that Carr was going to get overpaid as just a good free agent, not a great one. The Cowboys did the overpaying. Strategic use of free agency is needed, and just refusing to pay the going rate for great free agents is not strategic use.

Are there any WR's who are handicapped? That might be the guy the Cowboys sign in free agency.

don't take the cheese guys. We have many guys we must extend and resign already on the team. Thats likely why they cleared space.
This is what I don't understand. Aren't there other teams with "their guys" to sign? How do they sign big ticket FA players? We're the only team who commits 99% of our cap to our own guys. Then the Jones decide to pay MORE for those same guys who didn't win anything the previous year.
