We have a pretty legit pass rush now

I wouldn't say it's void of talent. Too young sure.

The theory is that a pass rush is supposed to fix all of these problems so I hope it actually does this and we aren't required to have a perfect team under Marinelli to get his scheme to work.

We already have to have a near perfect unit offensively to get it to go so hopefully a pass rush is enough for MArinelli and he doesn't need great players at every position.

I agree completely. I've been a huge marinelli apologist, but it's time for the unit to step up. The pass rush has proven it's capable of getting to the QB. You have a solid but not great group of LBs. The secondary is young, but talented. It's week 9 of the regular season, so it isn't asking to much for the rookies to start showing something. They don't have to turn into pro bowlers overnight, but we should see progress.

I honestly think it's put up or shut up time for this defense. Barring a huge run of injuries we are about to find out if rod can coach up this defense into a respectable unit or if the issue truely is an outdated scheme that doesn't belong in the NFL in 2017.

Im talking about guys like Heath, Carroll and the other scrubs they were planning to start this year.

I do think some of these young players will eventually get there, but there's no telling how long it will take before Awusie and Woods are primary players over Brown and Heath. I don't think the talent is bad if those guys pan out, along with Lewis.

I questioned the idea of starting Heath just because he made some plays in a reserve role. I didn't mind giving him a chance, but it was a big risk to do that with our only fallback really being a sixth-round draft pick. (I viewed Awusie as a possible fallback, too, but injuries have kept that from being a possibility.)

I also questioned whether Brown could play up or improve on last year's level and so far, my concerns about him have materialized as he's been up and down.

Scandrick was our best corner going into the season, but the broken hand set him back some, and you know how I feel about Jones (as I do with you).

Lewis and Woods both have had rookie moments, but there's certainly some promise there. I think there is with Awusie as well, but we need to see more of him.

It's funny. Last year, the secondary was arguably the best unit on this defense, but so many were quick to want to cut bait with Church, Carr and Claiborne. Now, it appears we could use those "replaceable" guys with the pass rush we have going.

Talent in the young guys, but the veterans not so much.

If our DL can’t effectively play the run, I’m not so enamored with the pass rush.

And the Skins were decimated on the OL; I can’t get excited about our showing in that game either.

Improvement is noted; hoping for more against better personnel.

Oh im not excited either but it's because of the hole we are in and what is coming up on our schedule.

I hold my excitement until after the Philly game.

That's worked well in our 3 losses this year.

At some point we need to D up.

We have a pass rush. Everyone goes on and on about how important a pass rush is. Well we have one and I want to see them do something with it.
I think the pass rush is most effective when you force the other team into passing situations. When we extend drives and top them off with a score it tends to make the other team not be as patient with their run game as they should be. If teams are allowed to remain patient with their run game it's usually not good for us. I don't think our 3 losses were due to trying run the ball and extend drives. You're absolutely right in that we need to D up in either case.

So now that we have it we have to start seeing the guys on the back end do a little better then what they are doing.

Rod Marinelli needs to get some of this stuff squared away and we need to start seeing more turnovers on defense.

Pass defense in the NFL is absolute horrible but we need to be better then horrible with the pass rush our D Line provides.

The next 3 weeks are a big test for our secondary. Where is Awuzie? Step up.

Andy Reid will eat us up with short stuff all game if Rod lets him.
I'm waiting for the Chiefs game to see what we have in the way of a pass rush and defense in general. This game will be a major test for us. We are going against very talented and quick receivers, a mobile and newly accurate QB who seems to be making great decisions (unlike before), an all pro TE and top 5 RB. Their O line is nothing to sneeze at as well. They have what we have on offense, with more outside speed and a very good pass rush defense.

I wish we'd play more man. I really hate giving WR's free releases. I rather get beat by tight and contested dots thrown by QB's than to have the WR with a 3 yard cushion running in open space.

I know it's all relative, but this probably is the best pass rush Dallas has had in about 5-6 years.
Again, comparatively speaking.

Me, too. Plus, they play basically the same offense PHI does.

It's possible we sucked so totally hard defensively to start the year because of the new players all over the secondary and the two best LBs being out, plus Irving suspended. It does seem like we've sorted out how we want to use the DLs finally. And Lee/Hitchens has stabilized the LB corps. It would be really nice to see Jones become the dominating secondary player we heard hints about in camp. Or for either Awuzie to come back and play well or for Brown to step his game up a couple of ticks. Still a lot of what-ifs going into our 8th game here, though.

Great point that they play the same offensive formations as PHI. See what we're in for in the future.

This will be a more serious test. Reid has some talent to work with. The Cowboys will need Elliott and his Running to beat Kansas City.

Awusie was inactive because of injury. However, it is perplexing that we're getting this kind of pass rush and our defense isn't performing better overall. Some of it has been our run defense not getting the job done, but we're also should be doing better in coverage.

A lot of us thought a better pass rush would be the panacea for Rod's defense, but it hasn't been ... which certainly makes it look like those who said Marinelli's scheme is the problem were correct.
Not perplexing actually. The middle of the field is wide open because the back 7 gets too far back in their drops.

Things probably get better if Irving keeps on collapsing the pocket like he has been.

I think the guys we let leave were underestimated. They obviously weren't great, but they performed well as a unit last year (and I think Church has been underrated for years).
Mo Claiborne absolutely stymied Julio Jones.

Probably should have at least kept him.

Yes, we do. But we also have a useless Jaylon Smith somehow getting a ton of snaps and one of the league's worst secondaries.

I can't blame Dallas for not keeping him based on his injury history, but he showed his last couple of years here that he was pretty good when healthy.

Not saying it wasn't smart cutting ties with non-phenomenal veterans, but you don't cut ties with 5 veteran DBs with nobody to replace them.
