Not saying it wasn't smart cutting ties with non-phenomenal veterans, but you don't cut ties with 5 veteran DBs with nobody to replace them.
That's always been my problem. I'm big on contingencies and this front office doesn't seem to see the necessity of them. A lot of this is the "new" strategy of not overpaying, but the problem with that strategy is that if you don't get the cheap replacements right then you take a step back. We've definitely taken a step back in the secondary with the scouts/coaches missing on Church's replacement (Heath) and Carr/Claiborne's replacement (Carroll).
Before the end of the year, we may take a step forward with Lewis, Awusie and Woods, but we didn't plan well for the interim. Scandrick and Jones are good enough to win with as starters IMO. Brown is a good role player, but we counted on him to be more than that or counted on Carroll to be able to start. Then, we did little at the safety position other than elevate a role player and cross our fingers. Sure, we drafted a sixth-round safety, but that's not really a plan.
