We have literally needed a safety since 2007

Not really. There was a lot of hype, but they haven't done anything. There's a bunch of guys who are alright, but you could make a case that Wilson was the best pick of that entire class.

Jury is still out, but that year is a pretty good case study in why "invest resources at safety" isn't really a smart, fundamental approach.

Wilson has been really good, and it's unfortunate it has taken injuries and favoritism for this guy to get his time to shine.

I don't think people realized how good Chinn and Winfield really were.

Chinn was amazing this year; closest thing I've seen to Kam Chancellor.

Winfield was downgraded for his size. That kid is a football player.

This year..

Guys I like:

Trevon Moehrig, TCU - Great athlete, makes plays, true centerfielder. Reminds me of Jesse Bates (Wake Forest/Cincinnati Bengals). also like Bates, not the greatest tackler.
Bubba Bolden, S, Miami - Known him since he was a sophomore in high school. 1st round physical ability, play consistency is not where you'd like it be.
Talano Hufanga, USC - Kept him out of rankings due to my USC homerness slash bias. He just makes plays, over and over again. I was worried about his 40 time and overall athletic ability, but he finds the ball. Was Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year this season.
Hamsah Nasirildeen, Florida State - Poor man's Isaiah Simmons. Great size and movement skills. Can help with the dangerous Tight Ends in the league.
Tyree Gillespie, Missouri - Thumper, reminds me of the 49ers Jaquiski Tartt.
Divine Deablo, Virginia Tech - Speaking of Kam Chancellor earlier, this fellow Virginia Tech alum is big boy and does his work closer to the LOS.

Guys I do not like:
Andre Cisco, Syracuse - I want to like him, I really do. He can be special when the ball is in the air. He can also be outright stupid. Scares me if he's your last line of defense.
Richard LeCounte, Georgia - Georgia is always talented on defense. You have 7 or 8 future NFL players around you. I wanted to see more plays. I wanted to see elite movement skills.
Paris Ford, Pitt - Like Cisco, I just think he makes really poor decisions at times. Capable of big plays. I'm allowing the possibility that I'm wrong on Ford (and Cisco).
Caden Sterns, Texas - Does not make plays. Looks the part, seems to shy away from physicality.

Guys I cannot figure out:
Jevon Holland, Oregon - Nickel guy, not sure about his speed. Versatility is his biggest asset.
Richie Grant, UCF - Seems like he's been there forever. UCF has some talented CB's (in 2019) so I wonder how much of his success was due to them.
James Wiggins, Cincinnati - Crazy athlete but seems like he's always hurt. Also older than most prospects.
Ar'Darius Washington, TCU - He's like a mix of Lamarcus Joyner and Bob Sanders to me. He's tiny, but I'm sure someone is going to draft him in the middle rounds, put him at Nickel, and watch him make plays.

Ford is an enigma to me. If you pair him with a good secondary coach who can instill some discipline in him, he might be a really nice safety. I'd take a flier on him with that late 3rd comp pick or 4th rounder if we still hadn't taken a safety. I suspect someone will be dazzled with the numbers on him and take him sooner.

Damn. This is a great post. Thanks

Who are the best prospects this year? Any hope we can finally fill our need at safety?
For some reason nobody wants to give the Cowboys credit for Donavon Wilson. We actually have a good safety with him. We may have his partner already on the roster in Reggie Robinson.

-I was a big fan of Winfield last yr, but knew the Cowboys weren't even going to consider him due to his lack of height/length at the position. A lot of these scouting departments, have certain physical parameters at certain positions. I would rather draft the best football player, then a prospect who fills the physical requirements that they set for that position. A player like Nick Bolton might fall into the same category with the Cowboys as he won't meet their physical profile.

-Think the best way to address the Safety position is sign a quality veteran at the position and draft/develop his future replacement. We need a Safety who can lead the unit, line everyone up and remind each of their assignments pre-snap. Many issues with the secondary this yr was more about blown coverages, a veteran would help improve that area as we cannot expect a rookie to come in right away and be such a player.

-Clearly the need is for more of a coverage, free safety as it looks like Donovan Wilson has earned the starting strong-safety position. Wilson has shown the Physicality that the position requires and has the instincts to always be around the football. Who are the best fits and meet the Cowboy requirements at the position:

-Moehrig, LeCounte, Grant, Cisco

-I think this year's class has better strong safeties then it does at free safety. I think these 4 fit the Cowboys profile the best. I am in agreement about Cisco, but I think the other 3 have a good chance to be drafted by the Cowboys.

Where do you see Bolden fitting the best as a Strong Safety?

I haven't done a ton on the safeties but at first glance it appears to be a better year for SS or the box safety types.

A few guys I like early are Moehrig, Grant, Holland and Wiggins. Cisco is going to test out of his mind at the combine and is arguably the best playmaker in the class but there's a lot of busts with it so not sure what to think of him.

Somebody gets it. Same goes for dt too. No rookie is coming in stabilizing anything at those positions. If jerry tries to sell that, dont buy it

I agree, we need to find 2 quality fa starters at both NT/FS and draft/develop their future replacements. We could also could use a veteran 3 Tech so the likes of Hill/Gallimore aren't forced to start when not ready. There has been some rumblings recently that Gerald McCoy might return, which would fill this need.

The two TCU safeties, Moehrig and Washington, are very intriguing to me. Moehrig is more of a prototypical S, and Washington is tiny but is always making very intelligent plays. I like Holland and Ford, too.

I would not mind doubling up on safety early in this draft.

Wanted to bump this as we're further along in the draft process.... any hope we fill our 2 decade long need at safety?

Richie Grant took the biggest leap of anyone since this thread went around.

He is included in many fan mocks as a Cowboys pick...2nd round, 3rd plus for those non updated simulators.

Its a generalization that 10 is too high for Moehrig.

I disagree if he actually solves the safety problem.

Re-draft mocks years after the fact are so different than actual that teams just need to hit on players and forget about where they are taken up against current media mocks.

Get ready for more of the same this year.
If we sign a FA it’ll be a has been that little Stevie can get on the cheap so he can call himself a “shrewd businessman”. And we don’t draft one until at least round 5.

Secret sauce you mean?

Team has to get aggressive if they truly want a difference making safety. Either trade back or trade up to secure either Moehrig or Grant. If they miss out, probably won't see a safety drafted until day 3.

Where are Moehrig and Grant projected to go?
