we need a better one. That is really the only outstanding thing the Giants have.

But it is enough.

SF gave Brees fits all game long and kept it close enough to win.

We got to have a guy that can balance out Ware.

Just absolutely must have.

And corners that can catch a ball that is thrown directly at them...:D

Spencer is "solid" though. So is Spears. We love "solid" because we can't have stars everywhere apparently.

We have to work on both simultaneously.

If the secondary is too weak the QB can throw the ball up knowing we can't defend it no matter how good our passrush is.

We don't need a great secondary, just an above average one so long as we can accompany it with a good pass rush.

I wouldn't hesitate to take the CB if he is the better player than reach on an OLB/DE who may be a bust. That is how you build a decent team.

For all the hubbub of the Giants and their investments on the DL they also gave Rolle a big contract, Kenny Phillips was a 1st round pick, Aaron Ross was a 2nd round pick and Corey Webster was a 2nd round pick.

The Giants just do a better job of not wasting cap money on overpriced vets so they can compete in FA for players. They also do a better job of not whiffing in the draft as much as us so they have reasonable depth via the draft and UDFA.

We can get better but Jerry has to manage the cap better. He needs to get core players extended earlier in their careers for more reasonable deals and he has to let declining vets to somewhere else while we bring in young kids in FA even if it means paying them a bit of a premium. The Rat and Witten extensions were a step in the wrong direction, IMO. The Oscan signing was a step in the right direction but they just overpaid way too much given that he had never earned a starting spot.

Amazing you get pressure on a QB and they make mistake. Romo gets pressure and some how it is his fault. :laugh2:

It is their pass rush that is the big factor

Yeah we need to get another CB, and maybe another Safety; but the pass rush they are getting makes any secondary look a lot better

Truth.

Apparently Cowboys fans and FO have become comfortable with average/solid and nothing more from first round picks!

Yay 8-8!

Right, I think if we can't extend players we think have a future with the team, we should draft their replacement. Waiting to sign someone like Doug Free until he reached the absolute peak of market value is not good business. We did the same thing with Hamlin.

They also have 4 former 1st round picks in their prime in that secondary, and that does not include Corey Webster.

Not really. More like JAGS who show up once in a while.

frankly they rarely play like they are first rd picks. And their pass rush helps out a whole lot.

Yes, this is true. Unfortunately this is a really hard thing to just "get" in one offseason, especially when you also need overhaul the interior of your OL and re-tool your secondary.

We also did it with Austin even though we could have had him play out more of his tender after one big year - pad at peak. We should have made him prove he was elite for a 2nd year in a row before paying him a top 5 salary.

We did the same thing with Barber and didn't have him play out his tender for his first year as a starter - paid at peak. It would have been better for him to prove he was a premium player instead of paying him like he was one already.

The one time we did it right was Romo. After his big year in 2006 we made him prove for 3/4ths of the season in 2007 before we extended him. I think that was the influence of Parcells on Jerry.

I don't understand why Jerry thinks he doesn't need a GM. He gets way too emotionally invested in the players and it clouds his judgment. He needs someone to restrain him and that is the GM role. Him and his son have deluded themselves into thinking they can be co-GMs of the team. They just continually run it into the ground unless they have a strong coach with GM skills backing them up. The problem is that not many coaches are good GMs because it takes a different set of skills to do the GM job and is a full-time job in and of itself. The coaches are also usually too invested in the players on the roster to fuction properly in that role.

I agree about the passrush, but Eli and his WRs are exceptional.

giants are showing what a consistant/reliable pass rush can do for you... it starts with the line. So often it seems with Dallas that the pass rush is left to Demarcus Ware. If he doesn't get there...oh well, next down b/c nobody else is stepping up.

Cruz and Nicks are a devastating combination and they are both young and getting better. We are going to have our hands full defending them for the next several years.

Just watch the Giants extend Nicks next year and then do the same thing with Cruz the year after that. They will both get them extended for well under premium contracts. They might get both of them extended for less than we pay Austin.

We need a do-it-all DE that would command attention away from Ware. Canty excelled in that role when he was here. I am also a firm believer that with this top tier DE we would be able to do alot more 4 man pressure packages from our odd front and drop more guys in coverage. This whole pass rushing OLB opposite of Ware is OK and all but that means we have 5 guys rushing and one less linebacker covering a TE/RB or dropping in a shallow zone or flat. Just like the OL, on defense the DE is an important position on the defense that needs to be able to collapse the pocket.
