Wilcox is the biggest issue in this secondary

This guy always takes bad angles. The Matthews td in OT last night is not a first. Basically, the Cowboys throw two Strong Safeties on the field and hope they can get it done. Well, they can't. Get a Free Safety with some range to cover the field. Since you don't have one now stop trying to be like Seattle with the Cover 3. You don't have the personal for it Rod.

Instead of revamping the whole defense, just fix the DT's, that will go a long ways helping the back end. One off-season isn't going to allow all of these holes to be filled.

I've actually been surprised with Heaths man coverage on dome of these tight ends. He's step for step with them and tries to make a play on the ball. Not bad Heath - sorry for all the bad things I said about you.

I've been disappointed in Wilcox. He takes bad angles and I thought that he would have cleaned it up this year. I was hoping anyways. I'd take an old Woodson / Roman Harper type right now as wilcox's replacement.

With Scandrick, Jones, and Patmon coming back next year as Cbs we aren't in too bad of shape. Probably better spending our money on Lb, Rb, DT, OL then WR, and FS

Patmon sucks.

You have FA and the draft, you can fill most of them. You don't need top quality talent at every position, you do need good players that fit your scheme. This can be done.

Yes. I would start up front first then work my way back. DT first. I don't care what spin Marinelli or the team tries to put on the 1T. You can't tell me it's not an important position in the defense when the current 1T is flat on his back and RBs are gashing you b/t the tackles.

Then I would go to LB. Hopefully Wilson can actually play. Lee is a good player no doubt. But it's time. I'll just leave it at that. McClain had a good 5-6 games for us last season and that's about it. Get 2 guys at LB who can fly, add some range to the position.

And lastly FS. We are the only team it seems that can't effectively fill this spot. Ken Hamlin with all his flaws is the last guy who came even close. And that was 7-8 years ago.

We should likely be looking to drafting a ball-hawking FS if one is available for us in the draft. Jones could be extremely valuable at CB if and when Carr is sent packing next year. Of course, the right FS would have to be there when our turn comes up and it's not too high of a pick for a good safety to be acquired without reaching. I'm thinking other positions might take priority with the earliest picks.

Patmon sucks.

I wouldnt say he sucks. Hes not a 1-2 starting corner but probably a decent 4th corner. Cant have all your corners starting quality in the nfl. Kinda like saying your 4 th receiver isnt a baller. We can always improve and should always look to improve.

As much as I like what Claiborne is doing this year, I think the defense we are running needs more aggressive corners. We don't have a single ballhawk in our secondary.

I'm not a huge fan of Janoris Jenkins, but if Marinelli is our DC in 2016, Jenkins is a CB that will be on my radar. I think with Scandrick coming back next year, Jones will be moved to safety. But we need to start looking for Church's replacement, he doesn't have the athleticism to be a starter in this league.

There's only one corner, Hargreaves, I really like in this draft and he'll be taken in the top 10-15. But I'm also interested to see where Fuller drops in the draft after his injury, a second or third round pick for him may be a steal.

It's getting more and more clear that the players we have on this defense aren't fitting the scheme we are running, especially in our secondary. This needs to be addressed, ASAP.

More aggressive? Sure!
But at this point I'd be content if they could cover most of the time.
The safeties also need a dose of . . . athleticism.
I lost it when that Philly receiver in OT just zipped by a bewildered Wilcox and Church.

Our safeties are horrendous. They make for good ST players, but that's it.

Church gets beat badly too often. The Willson catch for a TD against the Seahawks is a great example. He got eaten alive on a fairly simply move and it was an easy TD for Seattle. He seems to know his assignments well, but a lack of quickness and foot speed combined with an inability to make any plays is a problem.

I'm not sure what is going on with Wilcox. The 3rd and 18 play that the Eagles converted appeared to be more on him as he was woefully out of position. But, the last play of the game was a perfect example of why our safeties kill us. Corners aren't going to be perfect. They are going to get beat from time to time. A good safety makes that tackle and prevents the TD. Wilcox gets stiff-armed with easy and they score easily. I used to excuse Wilcox for taking some bad angles, but having the speed to make up for it. He seemed like he really knew the position last year and could direct Church around. Now he's almost the exact opposite player, but still takes bad angles. Extremely disappointing to watch.

Heath might be our best safety right now. He's got good speed and plays with intensity, but he's not big enough. I don't see him making that tackle on Matthews if he was in the position that Wilcox was in either.

And we really need to look out or LB corp. Lee wasn't exactly great since the first concussion, McClain has been terrible and Hitchens is now injured. I don't trust Lee (he should retire) nor do I trust McClain. Maybe Damien Wilson can provide something for us next year. Personally, I think the team should really address the safeties and the MIKE next year. Tough to address everything at once, so I would rather address what we can and hopefully those are much better next season to cover the other weaknesses.

Maybe I am wrong but it seems like the outside corners (Carr and Claiborne) have played pretty well this season.

I feel like most of the big plays and critical 3rd down failures have been in the middle of the field.

I agree, they are not world beaters by any means, but a scheme to fit their style of play, and some QB pressure would improve their play alot.

I agree, Byron Jones may very well be the FS next season but we should draft one no matter what.

Wilcox is kind of an enigma, I thought he was substandard last year and said in the offseason he needed to improve. He had flashes in the early games where he looked much better but seems to have regressed. No idea what the issues are, but I do think Scandrick and Claiborne are the starting CBs next year and they should focus on Safety like you say.

Until we fix the pass rush there is only so much our CB's can do.

I don't think our corners need to be more aggressive. They just need corners that can cover a wide receiver, tackle and if at all possible make an interception.

Let's be honest. We just need more corners. Whether they are aggressive or not.

When the 2016 draft opens for business it will be a full calendar year since we've drafted a CB in the first round. That can't happen. It wouldn't on my watch.

More ______ corners.

You fill in the blank. Just get more. Then profit.

the safeties have been bad for many years now, and Jones looks like a fresh beginning. But it is shocking to me how the opposing WRs are so wide open on most plays. Very seldom are they even challenged. To me its not that the CBs are terrible. Its that they are in the wrong system or do not know their assignments. I also don't buy that we have press corners and play zone. After 3 years of this defense, they should have learned the techniques and responsibilities. The pathetic pass rush also doesn't help.

But Romo is coming back and that will somehow, in a magical way make the defense play up the speed.

I think Jerome Henderson needs to be replaced. It doesn't seem to matter who we bring in, none of them are very aggressive after he coaches them up. He seems to come from the Dave Campo school of "trail the reciever by 4-5 yards, don't jump routes and whatever you do for heaven's sake don't look for the ball".
