yea, I know this isn't breaking news.
But instead of drafting a OT, I wonder how much it would take to pry Joe Thomas from the Browns.
I know he's their best lineman (and probably best offensive player), but with a new head guy (the Walrus), and a lot of holes all over I wonder if they might be in the listening mood.

yeah, a team who has one of the finest young LTs in the game is going to trade him. right.

Sonny, cmon buddy, lets be realistic here. Why in the world would the "walrus" want to trade one of his top players, a probowl LT, in his prime? Give Holmgren alittle more credit that that. Jerry and co. know that they need to upgrade the OL. I forget where I read this last week, but Cowboy scouts are already scouting the the top college tackles available in this years draft, so lets all hope that the boys can upgrade the OL for next season.

I know it would be unlikely, but Jerry has been known to overpay for a player.

I think we have to go the draft route simply because we have so much money tied up in long term deals with the guys we have.

Although we get a window next year to make a move if there is no cap.

The Cowboys have needed to upgrade the offensive line for years...they have drafted/traded, etc. to get us an average line, but the drafts in particular have been disappointing. This scouting crew and the coaches don't seem to be able to draft good lineman -- not sure why, but they prove it each year.

Jerry needs to bring in someone who can identify and draft good lineman (on the scouting or on the coaching staff). The cowboys do not have that person. Unfortunately we need to replace the entire "old" OL we have at present which is hard to do very quickly. Our backups are below average, and our average starters are very old...not a good combination.

Well there are worse things a GM can do. Especially when the player you're over paying is a quality guy.

I'd rather over pay a PB OL like Davis by say 8 mil over 6 yrs, than waste 8 mil in bonus money to a 2nd tier player who you end up cutting.

I don't know if the player's availible, but Jerry needs to make a 1st day splash in FA on an OL.
He needs to make one of those Davis type deals and overpay a little for quality.
I'd prefer a 50 mil type deal to a 40 mil dollar PB OL. But I'd settle for paying 20 mil over 6 yrs to a guy only worth 12 who can improve depth.

God I hope there's at least one PB type OL who can play LT or LG, that we can go and grossly overpay.

From your lips to gods ears. I really hope Jerry understands the gravity of the situation.

1) We must upgrade the scouts and coaches who will grade and coach our OL.
2) We must duplicate our drafting efforts. Takem early and often. Grab one in the 1st, 3rd and 5th.
3) If possible we need to overpay one can't miss big name. If not we need to overpay a couple 2nd tier guys.

I believe our top 6 OL are under contract for at least 2010. I don't want to get rid of any of them. But we certainly could use a significant upgrade to push one or more of those guys down the depth chart.

When you consider how old our OL is and the need to perhaps remake the entire unit in just a few years.........it's scarey.

We almost can't allocate enough resources to the problem.

As poor as the oline has played at times you cant help but wonder how sad the back ups are.
