Burnett was also victimized in pass coverage badly last week. There're dangers to making sweeping assumptions off of one game.

Amazing he never played that way when he was here.

this argument never makes sense to me. it's very rare to be able to make a logical comparison like this. teams are filled with different personnel, different coaches, different schemes, different play calls. sure, some players' talent level transcends the intangibles, (I imagine Ware could succeed anywhere instantly) but not often. maybe what they do in SD plays to his skill set more? all I mean is, it isn't black and white that players like that can line up with anyone and suddenly be effective. and certainly, it's not a statement i'd be willing to make based on one game. as mentioned, he had a lot of time here to make a larger impact, and it never happened. i'm glad he had a nice game, but it doesn't automatically mean he'd be playing that well in Dallas.

Reality check time:

Week one: 1 tackle + 2 asst = 3 total

Week two: 4 tackles +1 asst = 5 total

Lets put away the anointing oil for now please.

I wish we could have. I asked brian broaddus on dcfantatics show how and why he got away exactly.

Like I said on dc's show, it really is unfortunate, Burnette played his best football as a cowboys last year in the second half of the season.

We could really use him on this defense.

I agree. He had trouble staying healthy and was given every opportunity to do more here, it just never worked out.

Always liked him as a player though, wish him well in SD.
Yep, same here.

I think our D is having more trouble replacing Canty then Burnett, at least Chris gave us a little rush pass, although I know he was highly overpaid.

Ok. I agree.

What's your point?

We should have tried to keep him and cut/try and trade carpenter for something, maybe a hot dog. Not sign Brooking and give Burnett the starting spot or Burnett could have challenged/beat out Brooking for that spot.

Canty would disappear at times...the money he got paid was ridiculous but the 4-3 is a better fit for him. DE in this 3-4 are run stoppers first, then pass rushers. Olshansky is doing his primary job so far.

Anybody else curious too see if Olshansky is moved to the NT position and Ratliff moved to Ware's side as a DE? Olshansky is good at holding the POA and he is bigger than Ratliff and has played the NT position before...

Resigning Burnett - we've been down the road all off season.

Carp has no trade value IMO. In the final year of his contract and he is likely playing his last season as a Cowboy.

We needed to sign Brooking to replace Z. Thomas.

We tried to re-sign Burnett. He did not want to be here, and he was offended when we signed Brooking.

I can almost guarantee you that Burnett doesn't put up those type of numbers on "this" Cowboys Defense.

As he should be, Brooking is not a 3 down player and Burnett could have been. Brooking was signed first before this staff considered Burnett for the role and it just showed what they thought of Burnett. So now we let go of Burnett and we have Carpenter who hasn't shown us squat. And we have another LB that gets subbed in the nickel package.

hindsight is always better than foresight they always say

another issue you may not be aware of, from what i heard, cowboys offered pretty close to what the chargers did, but the agent for burnett messed up; reported wrongly to burnett on the issue;

The Cowboys offered the exact same contract. They matched the offer. Burnett just wanted to leave Dallas.

And good. I'd rather have people that want to be here.

If that's the case then Burnett should fire his agent. But it also shows that the Cowboys were trying to keep him. I'm with the OP that the D misses Burnett.
