No room for Murray anymore. Rod Smith is going to be the backup RB, and the RB3 needs to have some ST ability. We'll probably add a guy we can flex out in the passing game in the late rounds this year. Someone who gives you a little something in the return or ST coverage game.

back-up RBs usually only last 2 or 3 years. Murray has 2 good backup years in him.
He's also a very very good receiver. Again, if he's willing to take 2 or 3 million.

He's still a good blocker and receiver. He can give you 5 carries a game and pick up the blitz.

This is a one Dimensional running Team who has to have a running back who can score. In the absence of Zeke last year we ran the ball effective but nobody stepped up and replaced Zeke's scoring Ability. Rod Smith couldn't do it last year. We need a completely revamped offense with a big power back to compliment Zeke. The Cowboys are still signing fbs and stuck in the one running back era. We have no big scoring threats offensively so having another stud rb on the field w Zeke who can score and also provide depth and competition for the position is obviously just as critical as having depth for Sean Lee. Lol.
Rod Smith is a good 3rd rb option. But he's not a game changer to warrant a backup role on a one Dimensional Running team. Zeke only missed 6 games last year. What if it was 10 games? Our season is over if Zeke pulls a hammy so we need depth and competition at the rb position Always. Plus we're prolly not gonna be able to sign Zeke long term because we're gonna be capsized for overpaying for overhyped Tes who don't have any deep threat red zone or scoring abilities. I'm gonna watch the first game. If Rico Gathers isn't the starter at Te or somebody drafted then I know it's gonna be another winless playoff future for 2018 just like it has been since #82 started playing every snap enter banila set-it-and-forget-it offense.

We need a rotation of talented players not a set it and forget it personnel philosophy. Nobody gets rotated around. We never have two running backs on the field at the same time. There's no depth at rb whatsoever. We have a tight end that isn't an elite receiver nor a gamechange and we leave him out there on every passing snap w no substitution. Its not the talent that has held this team back. Dez was considered one of the top wide receivers in football in 2014 but we couldnt win beans when he was in his prime with no substitution much less now. We've had plenty of talented slot receivers and tight ends that have came through that could have made an impact in our offense somewhere on the field but we chose to line up in the same formations over and over and over for about as long as Jason witten's been playing for the Cowboys and it's not Working never worked ain't gonna work because he makes our offense too slow and predictable. He's gonna play every snap and get his receptions but he's just an over-utilized spot player because he has no speed, deep threat capabilities, Red Zone capabilities, scoring abilities, tackle breaking abilities and does not draw much coverage away from the skilled players around him. Tes w his skillsets do not play every snap!!! Unless you're the Cowboys but I guess it sells groceries But it's hasnt won us beans. Y'all all know that Witten isn't coming off the field even if Rico gathers turns out to be Gronk. So we're just going to handicap our self with one less game changer in the skilled position on offense. We need a couple of good running backs and then a backup. I probably wouldn't go after a running back on day one but I would certainly be looking for someone to fill in for Zeke at his level that can complement his play throughout the year. If Rico is healthy maybe he can break our te scoring production curse that has plagued this franchise for 5+ years. But if Witten plays every snap we still won't win beans. Te's just really don't have that much impact on our passing game unless they're a deep threat or a scoring machine. I take three fresh rookies over anything that we have on our team at rb or te w the exception of Zeke but who knows if he's even gonna be available all 16 games. It was Ezekiel Elliott does go down you can bet there's nobody behind him that we can replace his scoring and big play production which is why we lost so many games last year because nobody could Step Up running this vanilla style offense

We had the leagues leading rusher w Murray and Zeke and Dez in his prime and still only won that one chokefest of a playoff game against the Lions w this great set it and forget it personnel groupings philosophy. The law of averages works better when you have 2 rbs who can score. Esp in the playoffs where you're definitely going to have to beat someone through the air. One rb can't score all the TD's There's a reason why the slot wr and athletic receiving te position evolved and the FB position petered out years ago. But we keep trying to emulate what worked back in the 90s and Why it sounds great on paper it's certainly not very effective at the playoff level for several years for any teams. Add a mobile QB who can score and he still can't overcome the lack of rotation on offense.

When zeke son the field, he can handle the load. He led the league in yards per game. The last tine he played 16 games, he led the league. He also had o sr 120 in the playoffs. The reason we lost with romo was the line was bad and we had. I pass rush. We lose today when dak isn’t accurate and the offense stalks.

We haven't won beans in over 20 years so I'm sure there are countless reasons why we haven't won from year to year. Yes we've had the leagues leading rusher for a couple of years. We had Dez in his prime and Romo and Zeke and Murray in their prime. We still didn't have a clutch passing game. The only thing thats ever been consistent w the Cowboys is Jw has been out there on every single passing snap for 15 years. Yeah he's caught a lot of rinky dink passes for 5 yards but wheres all those scores and highlight reels of him dominating as a receiver. Where's all those game-winning passes to #82? 100 yard games. Scoring? Having him play every single passing snap and being a main receiving cog has been a detriment to this offense for 6-7 years. There's a lack of successful production in scoring and winning w our entire tight end core for years an it's gonna take are number one receiver and running back to lead the league at their respected positions in order to just get to the playoffs much less win a playoff game. That's just the way our offense is designed and unfortunately it still hasn't worked. We undervalue the slot receiver position where we've had a lot of talent but we overvalue and overtarget the tight end position where we don't really have that much talent. Just a bunch of catch rate possession tes who have no scoring or big play capabilities. Every year we over utilize these tight ends as if it's part of some winning formula but it's not a successful formula at the playoff level. Never has been and never will. The only regret Jerry will ever have is not winning a Superbowl for Jason Witten. But as long as he's the starter never comes off the field we're going to get the same results. We never have and never will win beans having a main cog that's just a possession receiver with very little scoring ability.

No, besides, at 30 he's on the downside of his career, and more likely to get hurt, no, he burned his bridges, stick with Smith or draft a running back, or both.

He's not the main receiving cog, if by that you mean he's the focus of the offense, seems that way because he gets thrown to quite a bit, but it's not true. In 2016 his main job was to stay in and block, hence Zeke's NFL rushing title, and Beasley was the leading receiver. In 2014 he did the same for Murray. In 2017 he had the lowest reception numbers since his rookie year, and then some people complained about his low numbers, "evidence" that he should be let go.
The reason he gets the attention is because he's nearly always open, he gets the passes because there's nobody else open, not because he is the focus of the offense. Which would you rather have, Dak throwing for 5 yards before a punt, of Dak throwing an interception because he's forcing a throw to a covered receiver, or throwing it away and having to punt 5 more yards to make up the lost yardage?
Most NFL teams would kill for a tight end who never misses a game, who is annually in the top of the percentage of receptions vs. targets and is a security blanket for a young quarterback.
You're looking at Witten the wrong way, we should be grateful for having him....
