That's too bad because it has been the formula for every Super Bowl appearance in Cowboys history.

the Dallas Cowboys went to all eight of their Super Bowls between 1970 and 1995. During that entire span they had at least one DT that was drafted #5 overall or higher:

Bob Lilly
Randy White
John Dutton
Russell Maryland
Tony Casilles

The first year the Cowboys didn't have a high 1st round draft pick at DT?

That would be 1996.....the year after they won their last Super Bowl.

It's really not their philosophy (Quinn's or FO) to draft NTs with a high pick unless they have real pass rush potential.

How did that pass rush work out for the team when the run game was a sieve? Balance on both sides of the ball is what wins games. Playmakers are what wins games. If this kid could maintain two linemen, that leaves Vander Esch and company a free run at the ball.

Coaches think of all the moving pieces to get that side of the ball to function well. I have no clue if the team is considering this position, or even this player.

But they should. Especially if they make a bold move on a WR who can stretch the defense. I'd like to see a guard in the free agent mix, as well. So that leaves the draft for next man up.

Shoring up the 2nd CB spot will allow them to put Wilson in the box more on early downs but they still need to add a DT.

Why didn’t we cut all of these players earlier and sign the guy from the Eagles?

I didn’t we go big $$ to fill a big hole?

Anyone have the answer any solutions that you see on the rise ?

Signing Hankins or a similar-type FA and drafting a NT in the middle of the draft (3rd-5th rounds) and the run defense should be solid.

I haven’t responded because I got my answers .
We really don’t have a plan at DT outside of the draft.
I was hoping for a day 1 - 2 DT signing.

Not sure Hankins can play full time either .

We need a dynamic DT to help Micah & LVE free up.

I've heard this draft will be strong on receivers (both WR & TE) and RBs. Haven't heard much else, so I don't know how it stacks up for defensive players. I can't see us drafting a NT in the 1st two rounds unless he's exceptionally talented. That being said, I don't think we're going to ignore the defense either.

Why would we try to stop the run? That is the first thing that they will be expecting!

we struggled early on and had to add Hankins; he helped tremendously and opt not to bring him back as of yet.

Need to keep Hankins around.

The defense was lights out in the playoffs except for the second corner. San Francisco vaunted run game was held under control.

No one is trying to run on them right now. We're still 6 months away from that.

Yeah it was really bad early season. Got better later, but it was still a persistent problem. there's still time to address it obviously, but it needs to be addressed.
