We still never addressed backup QB

I think it is self evident there is a QB problem in this league and few teams are stacked.

But when you have a team with an honest to goodness health risk at QB, an offensive scheme that is dependent on said QB and the same sad backup situation, it is not good.

One consideration that can not be taken lightly is how Moore stacks up against the 31 other backup QBs. I don't see him as one of the better backups in the league. It is not hard to believe that there are 25 better backups on rosters. Dallas might as well cut Moore and just go with Dak if it saves money. We saw how little hope there is if Romo goes down to win last year. The trade up for Lynch is looking more and more like a lost opportunity that will haunt this team for years. At least Lynch offered some hope for the future.

I'm more concerned about the process that determined Weeden was the unquestioned backup for two years, with no competition. The same process yanked him after 3 games, and traded for a journey man QB. Obviously, there is something rotten in their backup QB evaluation process lately.

Jerry is on record admitting he tried to get cute with the back up position and it came back to bite him. The sad part is that he's trying to get cute yet again. As if some Bernie Kosar type will become available at some point between now and when he's needed.

my take - yes we messed up, but not the way you all think

as far as backup qb's go - I actually think Moore will prove to be more then adequate. Not having an off-season is huge for a backup qb. ignoring he threw for nearly 450 yards in his last start without offseason/ota practice advantages is a mistake

he is just a backup though. I don't like Prescott as a developmental guy. we are wasting time and resources with that IMO

Just read an article listing all 32 backup QBs. It aint just our FO that can't find a keeper folks.

Which one of these guys would make you feel good about our chances if Romo gets hurt?

Why the hell is Matt Cassel ranked so high? He's at #11 I think...They even screwed up Cassel's record last season as starter, saying he went 2-6 as a starter. He only went 1-6. He technically "started" the first Bills game when he was on their roster, but he didn't have any pass attempts, and just handed the ball off to LeSean McCoy....once. Tyrod Taylor was the actual QB for the game (minus that hand off). Yet that "start" is used in his favor why they have confidence in him as a backup lol...

Meanwhile, Colt McCoy is ranked at #21.

Cassel and McCoy's stats the last two years as backups:

Pass Attempts
Cassel - 275
McCoy - 139

Yards
Cassel - 1701 yds
McCoy - 1185

Completion Percentage
Cassel - 58%
McCoy - 70%

Yards Per Attempt
Cassel - 6.2
McCoy - 8.5

TD/INT
Cassel - 8:11
McCoy - 5:3

TD Percentage
Cassel - 2.9%
McCoy - 3.6%

INT Percentage
Cassel - 4.0%
McCoy - 2.2%

W/L
Cassel - 1-6
McCoy - 1-3 (could be 2-3, since he came into the Titans game at halftime when the Skins were losing and got the win)

Ranking
Cassel - #11
McCoy - #21

The only guys that should be backing up Romo are one of the top 3 quarterbacks who were in the draft. Veteran backups shouldn't even be in the equation.

That would have been the smartest move for this season and the future. Lynch was there, but Jerry wouldn't make the deal. He made a similar deal for Lawrence the year before, but I don't guess they view the QB position worth it.

They half assed the backup QB position. Only a true homer thinks they "addressed' it.

The front office came out after the season and was pretty clear they needed to upgrade the backup QB position They shopped around, saw that everyone wouldn't bite on their lowball offers, then came back and said Moore was their backup option all along.

LOL. You guys cant be that naïve.
So how much should they have spent on a backup QB looking at the deals that "decent" backups got?

I have no idea.

But don't treat the fans like idiots coming out and saying that Moore was their backup QB option all along. That's insulting.

I get that, but we don't know what QBs were realistic options out there.

So, I am not all that familiar with all the deals that were thrown out there. Who could we have gotten for that price tag, assuming that contract was the only factor?

Hoyer, Moore, Weeden :)

Schaub for a tab more. Sanchez for $4.5 and a 7th.

I doubt anyone is comfortable with our backup QB situation except for those who seem to think Moore is the second coming of Romo. Moore had 6 INT's last season and the Cowboys were outscored 50-29 in the two games he started. The team did try to address the backup position this offseason by offering a #2 and a #3 to move up for Lynch in the draft which tells me had either Goff or Wentz been available at #4 the Cowboys would have taken one of them. Our backup QB position is about as sketchy as it's been in a number of years with no QB on the roster having an NFL win but Romo.

We're just going to have to keep our fingers crossed and hold our breath Romo doesn't miss many if any games this season. If Moore and Dak don't look good during preseason the Cowboys may have to scramble to try and bring in a veteran off the street. If it were me I would have already brought in a veteran to learn the offense and prepare myself in the event Moore doesn't look like he can handle the job. The team is going to have to learn to adjust to a backup QB they can't be running an offense that's geared to Romo.

We're 1-13 the past 3 years without Romo which points to the offense not being friendly to any QB but him. Just losing him for 3-4 games could derail another season if we can't win at least a couple of games without him. When you have a suspect defense that can't stop anyone and you lose some punch offensively due to your QB going down it makes it difficult to win games so the team has to learn to adjust and players have to step up.

Fitzpatrick has told the Jets he won't accept backup money (around $6M); the Jets don't want to pay him starter money ($12M).

So how could he be a logical fit in Dallas as Romo's backup?

spite.....one year deal in DAL and waits for the call next year

If Dak really learns fast DAL could always trade Fitz at the deadline
