Broncos, Cowboys, Rams Extended Offers To DeMarcus Ware
April 6th, 2017 at 9:29pm CST by Sam Robinson
Less than a month after his retirement, DeMarcus Ware shed some light about what could have been had he sought to return for a 13th NFL season. The future Hall of Fame edge defender told Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post he received three offers this offseason as a UFA — from the Broncos, Cowboys and Rams.

Ware told the Denver-based reporter something changed between early February and mid-March, leading him to retire. The 34-year-old posted on social media on New Year’s Eve of last year he planned to play in 2017, but he reversed course. However, Ware told Jhabvala had he been under contract with the Broncos for another year he would be suiting up for them this coming season.

Denver’s right outside linebacker said retirement didn’t cross his mind during last season, but he did reveal that he played around three games with a herniated disc in his back. He underwent back surgery following the Broncos’ Week 16 game in Kansas City.

I’d sit down in meetings not knowing if I’d be able to get up,” Ware said, via Jhabvala, about going through weeks with the herniated disc. “This is stuff people don’t know you go through because I love playing football. … That [Chiefs] game, I was hurting so bad. I told myself, ‘You need to just get yourself fixed.”

I don't think this is news. I figured the Cowboys offered him something to play limited minutes next season. Note that the write up says what he was offered but not exactly who offered it. I seriously doubt the Cowboys were one of the teams offering him $7M for limited minutes.

Guess Ware got the last laugh. We kicked him to the curb, he wins a superbowl, we come knocking in desperation, he says no thanks and rides into the sunset. Not even a one day contract to retire a Cowboy.

Sad to her his back is in such a bad state. A 34 year old shouldn't be worried about whether he'll be able to stand back up when he sits down.

Rams were the one that offered the 7 m. Slater even later tweeted that the Cowboys and Broncos never talked numbers.

I would not call it desperation...maybe more like courtesy to help in a rotation and be a mentor to the young guns.
Maybe the one day contract comes later.

The C'boys probably didn't want to up the Rams $7mil offer to play limited minutes -- either that or he'd just had enough physical punishment. He's also way better suited to play LB in a 3-4 than DE in a 4-3. Anyhow, I'm betting he'll still retire as a Cowboy, just as it should be.

Oh, I'd call it desperation when one of your DE's would rather smoke weed than work, while the other has had two back surgeries in as many years. We were looking for more than just mentorship.

Well ok then...whatever you want to call it, then call it that...I don't see it that way.
And it doesn't matter, we need defense at all positions. But I still would not call it desperate.

While Ware coming back might be helpful to the Cowboys and a great feel story for the fans, think about it from Ware's perspective. This is basically a different team than the one he was on when he was here. Other than Witten and LaDouceur, most of the rest of the team is new to him and the few others that were on the team back then were all really young, so coming back to the Cowboys now would be like going to any other team other than the Broncos.

With all of the injuries he has had, which was the main reason the Cowboys had to let him go, he should be concerned about his long-term health. With the money he has made, the hall of fame worthy stats he's achieved, getting a Super Bowl win, etc., he has really done all he could ever want from an NFL career. At this point, he would be smart to focus on his health and enjoying life now, which is what he seems intent on doing.

Yeah I doubt the Cowboys offered him 7. Probably 3-5 on a one year deal.

Pretty much take 1 year off for body to heal then unretire next year, lol. Trust me teams will still bite on 40 year old DeMarcus Ware.

Only he knows how his body feels...he has a ring now and has had a pretty solid NFL career so there's really nothing left for him to play for and risk damaging his body further so he's made the right decision.

Can't blame him for retiring, he has his future healthwise to consider. Has all the $$$ one can need and much more for generations.
