Wed. Practice Recap: Jenkins Continuing To Shine While Street Recovers
Wednesday, August 26, 2015 9:41 PM CDT
By DallasCowboys.com Report

OXNARD, Calif. – Across the Cowboys’ roster, Jason Garrett’s favorite refrain continues to ring true: injuries provide opportunities.

That’s already the case in the defensive secondary after the loss of Orlando Scandrick. It will also be the case at wide receiver, where an injury to Devin Street will open the door for those behind him.

Street had been nursing an ankle sprain in the early going of camp, and he re-aggravated the problem during Tuesday’s practice. His timetable for return is unclear, but the Cowboys intend to be patient with the injury.

At the same time, the Cowboys’ patience with one of their offseason signings is starting to pay off.

Through the early going of training camp, veteran wideout A.J. Jenkins looked likely to be one of the first players sent home. He looked uncomfortable and unproductive, and he didn’t do much to stand out.

Jenkins can catch the ball and isn't afraid of contact. I like the player. We have a lot of WRs to stash on the PS and one to make the team.

If Street Develops, and IF (Big IF) Jenkins isn't a mirage... TWill will have to have a big year to get a second contract with the boys.

The current plan at CB, according to Mickey Spagnola:

RCB Morris Claiborne, LCB Brandon Carr, Slot Tyler Patmon.

Byron Jones will be the top reserve at both outside spots, the swing CB.

But then Mickey said Jerome Henderson told him if Claiborne went down, Carr would move to RCB and Jones would play LCB.

Corey White is now the reserve slot CB and will challenge Patmon for the top spot.

Orlando Scandrick's injury doesn't yet preclude Jones and White from playing CB and S.

Not planning to sign another CB, if they do, it will be for depth in the final two pre-season games.

Status quo, for now.

This should be a lesson to everybody out there who wanted to trade a CB for another position because we had too many corners.

You never have too many corners.

I thought for sure Mickey would whine about fans wanting to release Carr because of his salary if he wouldn't take a pay cut.

I won't hide in that regard.

Carr wouldn't be on the team with his full salary in tact if I had a say in the matter.

I know we didn't need the cap room, but he hasn't played up to his salary and I would see it adjusted or say goodbye.

Carr stood his ground and it's not up for debate any longer.

We'll revisit his contract next off-season.

They have a few days to get Patmon ready to play slot, and see how he does Saturday.
Hoping for the best here, and a sigh of relief.

He'll be just fine.........he's a "fighter", that we know. He will exhibit a short memory, give some up..........and will, will take some away. Had a Pick 6 today in practice....

Best/worst training camp.

Rob Phillips: Best, WR Cole Beasley, no one can cover him, he's been fantastic.

Mickey: Worst, nagging injuries have prevented several players from getting looked at for several weeks, disjointed OL as an example, they haven't been able to practice together much.

Rob: Worst, collectively, the running game, the competition, you haven't gotten to see all three guys compete or play in a game situation enough. It has't been the heated competition you would expect.

Nate: Best, Greg Hardy has been a delight to watch, so has Cole Beasley. Worst, Darrion Weems and John Wetzel, they left a lot to be desired so far.

Mickey: Best, Randy Gregory, what he's done out here, if he continues to take steps, he can be a pretty darn good player. Another good thing is Tony Romo participating in all of camp, not needing a rest day every other day, and he's been awfully sharp.

Jenkins would more likely make the team if he could field punts. Has he been tried as a punt returner? It seems like he should be able to do it.

Jenkins is fighting for that 5th WR position along with Whitehead, Harwell, and maybe even Goodley now. If Whitehead doesn't make the 53 as a returner, than I'd say the pecking order for 5th WR right now might be Jenkins, Harwell, Whitehead and Goodley.

I think it would be wise for Jenkins, Harwell, and Goodley to spend any extra time they have fielding punts if they want to maximize their chances.
