This team is trying to develop Weeden to be the bridge between Romo and a future QB. It costs us nothing to try to develop a guy who was just drafted in the first round two years ago.
Stop harping on his age, he isn't being developed to be the future franchise QB. Worst case scenario, he will be asked to start in 3-4 years. And he will be surrounded by a stacked offensive line, stacked wide receivers, and probably stacked running backs. We even have a lot of young talent at Tight End. Having Romo affords us the ability to draft really easily for the offense. You just plug guys in, and they are surrounded by high profile guys.
At some point while Weeden is developing, when you start seeing REAL degradation in Romo's playing capabilities, we'll draft a quarterback early. Having Romo doesn't just buy us time for the offense, it buys us time for the defense as well. The next 2-3 years will be focused in large part on building up the defense. And let's not ignore that this defense already has a lot of potential.
There are a lot of IFs involved with our defense.
1. Henry Melton
2. Morris Claiborne
3. JJ Wilcox
4. Bruce Carter
5. Demarcus Lawrence
We really won't know exactly what we have until the season starts.
I expect we'll draft another defensive end early next year, but again that really depends on what happens with Claiborne and Carter, and Melton for that matter.
On offense, we really only have a couple pieces missing. Maybe another guard (depending on how Leary develops and whether or not he can stay healthy) and a tackle to eventually replace Free.
We can almost entirely ignore our offense in the future, simply because we have Romo at the helm. And Weeden gives us even more security if he can develop.
The defense could end up being terrible, it could turn out that we need to completely retool the whole thing, but I don't think with the state of our offense that it would take more than 2 years (2016). We've also made some investments that might pan out like we hoped, and this team might all of a sudden be much better than we anticipate. We really just don't know at this point. One thing that needs to be taken into account is that the transition from 3-4 to 4-3 really cost us a year. If the 2012 draft can be salvaged in the form of the 4-3, it'll be great for us, if not we're probably looking at at least another year dedicated to the defense.
