Week one is upon us and we get to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs, as they are often called in shortened form, began in 1976 and hold the all time record for NFL futility. They lost every game in 1976, then a 14 game season, and the first 12 games of 1977, for a total of 26 straight losses. Their first coach John McKay is famous for one of the all time great NFL one line jabs. Asked about his team's execution he replied, "I'm all for it."
The Cowboys owe John McKay a huge thank you. IN the 1977 Draft Dallas traded with the Seattle Seahawks to take the 2nd pick in the Draft. Both teams needed Running Backs. McKay had been the Head Coach of the USC Trojans, so with the first pick in the 1997 NFL Draft the Bucs chose Ricky Bell. That meant that Tony Dorsett fell right into the Cowboys laps. Thank you John.
Had McKay taken Dorsett, there is little doubt the Cowboys would have taken Ricky Bell. He wasn't a bad RB, but he was no Tony Dorsett by any wild stretch of the imagination.
The Cowboys own an 8-3 all time record in the Regular season against the Bucs. They are also 2-0 against them in the post season.
The first five times the teams played each other the games were in Dallas. The Cowboys won all 5 as well as the sixth time the two teams met in Tampa Bay. Thus the series began with six straight Cowboys victories. This was followed by three straight losses to the Bucs and now two straight wins.
Tom Landry was 6-0 against the Bucs, including the two post season wins.
Jimmy Johnson was 2-0 against the Bucs. Both of those games happened in the 1990 season. In those days of 28 teams in the NFL the five team division last place teams ended up playing a home and away series. It was two of Jimmy Johnson's seven wins in 1990, a season in which he earned the Associated Press Award as Coach of the Year. An Award that only two Cowboys coaches have won. Tom Landry won it in 1966.
Barry Switzer and Chan Gailey's teams never faced the Bucs.
Dave Campo was 0-2 against them.
Bill Parcells was 1-1.
Wade Phillips is 1-0 against them, last year's 13-9 victory with Brad "Noodle" Johnson at the helm when Tony Romo was down with an injury. It was Brad Johnson's only win as a Dallas QB.
The Buccaneers all time record stands at 205-310-1 and 6-9 in the post season. They are one of only two teams in the NFL with a career winning percentage under .400 at .388. The other team is the Houston Texans at .357. The Bucs need at least an 8-8 record this season to ease above that .400 line.
The Buccaneers were originally awarded to a Philadelphia construction company owner named Tom McClosky. McClosky apparently felt he was the next Al Davis. Before he ever put a team in the field he sued the NFL. The NFL responded by pulling the team away from him and awarding it instead to Hugh Culverhouse Sr. He was a very wealthy Tax Lawyer who had previous NFL experience when he arranged the ownership trade of the Baltimore Colts and Los Angeles Rams.
Carroll Rosenbloom owned the Colts. Bob Irsay bought the Rams and then traded them to Rosenbloom for the Colts. This happened in 1972, four years before the Bucs were born.
Culverhouse died in 1994 after a battle with lung cancer. His death touched off a firestorm. Despite a 52 year marriage to his wife Joy, he was a known philanderer who had several mistresses. One of them was the wife of famed newscaster David Brinkley. The Culverhouse's were in the midst of a divorce when he died. It was later revealed that he had covered up several affairs that even included a palimony suit. He paid for psychiatirc health for one mistress who had serious drug problems. After Joy was awarded $43 million in a settlement with the estate she remarked that she wanted to go dig up Hugh so she could "shoot him three times."
Hugh Culverhouse Jr. soon discovered that the team was in dire financial straits and the team was put up for sale by the trustee's of Hugh Sr's estate. Baseball owners Peter Angelos and George Steinbrenner were the early bidders on the Bucs. Angelos intended to move the team to Baltimore. Malcolm Glazer outbid both baseball magnates and was awarded the franchise in 1995. At the time it was the record amount paid for an NFL team, $192 million.
Glazer turned over financial operations to his three sons. He immediately sought to build a new stadium. Raymond James Stadium, named for a St. Petersburg, Florida financial group was opened in 1998 at a cost of $168.5 million. The Stadium has hosted two Super Bowls, the first was XXXV after the 2000 season, and the second was XLIII after last season.
The Cowboys are 33-15-1 all time on opening days. This is the second time they have opened a season against the Bucs. The first was a 2001 6-10 loss in Texas Stadium.
This is Head Coach Raheem Morris' inaugural season. He is the eighth Head Coach in Buccaneers History.
