As always Hos you're a fountain of knowledge. Thanks for sharing it. I'm looking forward to us opening up the season in a big way.
dcfanatic shared something with me via PM that was posted on the forum, but got way too few comments.

Gil Brandt was asked by Bill Belicheck one time how Landry managed 17 straight seasons (an incredible record) of opening the seasons with a win. It seems the Hoodie had done some research and his research indicated that a team that teams that win that first game have a 50% better chance of making the playoffs than teams who lose that first game.

Also on that show Gil talked about how Chuck Howley became a Cowboy. Gil said he was on his way to visit a potential recruit or FA(can't remember which) and he stopped at a gas station I believe in West Virginia..

He noticed that a sign read that the store was owned by a Chuck Howley. Chuck had been drafted 2 years earlier in 1958 in the first round by the Bears.
After a knee injury he decided to retire. He then bought and ran his store. Gil located Chuck at the store and asked him about his decision to retire. He said his knee was fine but that George Halas refused to pay him anymore than $5000 and he could make more than that at his store.

Gil offered him (IIRC) $9500 to come and play for the Cowboys assuming they could work out a deal with the Bears to trade for his rights. They later agreed on a 2nd and 9th rd picks in the 1963 draft for Howley's rights. And the rest is history.

When Gil told Tex Schramm what he offered to pay Howley he said he thought Tex was going to fire him on the spot. He said there's no way in hell we can stay in business paying people that kind of money.

That's awesome. Thanks for that.

In the clips provided you hear Brandt tell that story. It will give you goose bumps. He also tells how the Cowboys started recruiting free agents before they even had a team.

Gil had a great trivia question too. Before the Draft had time limits on picks, the Cowboys held the record for the longest time deciding on who to pick. It was the 1964 Draft and they were on the clock for 6 and a half hours before they made their selection.

Anyone know who they picked and why it took so long?

I believe it was Mel Renfro and it took so long because they sent a doctor to his house to give him a physical and check out a shoulder injury he had.

Man, the Texans have a worse overall record than the Bucs. That is embarrassing! :lmao2:

Correct, but it was a hand injury. When he learned of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, he punched a mirror several times and did nerve damage to his hand. He was a RB in college at Oregon. They moved him to DB. 10 time Pro Bowl and 52 INTs later he made the Hall of Fame.

I disagreed with two choices on their All Time Cowboys Team. I would put Harvey Martin at DE instead of Haley; and I would put Eric Williams at RT and Rayfield Wright at LT. I agree with their Guards (LA and Niland)

Lombardi walked over to Cowboys draft table.

"He. He. He. What happened? Did your computer break down?" Lombadi asked.

That happened during the wait.:laugh2:
