Week 8: With the #2 selection

BigWillie;3663279 said:
Unless we continue to be horrid and get the #1 selection, I do not see how we get Andrew Luck. To me, he is by far the best prospect you can take at #1, and the true franchise QB in this class.

I just wish Matt Barkley was a junior and could come out in this class, that way we could have another shot at a franchise style QB.

In any case, if we stay at #2, we hope that some OT emerges and makes himself worthy of a top 5 selection. Ultimately, that is our biggest need and where the money will be well spent at.

If Luck goes #1, as I suspect, and we are stuck at #2, I would not be completely against taking Locker. I completely believe he is a project that needs grooming, but I think he would be in a fantastic situation where he could get that grooming. Locker is the type of QB who if rushed will be a huge bust, but if given the time and patience to learn and evolve could be an absolutely outstanding QB.

If we take him, keep Romo, and give Locker that time he needs, we could really benefit and likely have no dropoff in trying to find our next QB after Romo.

Granted this isn't my ideal situation, but I just don't see how we get Luck without getting the #1 pick.
so your advocating taking a non NFL ready QB at #2 overall?

if he is first round talent but not nfl ready he will be there in the mid 20s ala tebow

as much as people complain about GM jerry im so glad most of the people on this forum are not

Why does this surprise you?

You go over the last 10 years (only because I do not want to think further) in the type of raw QBs that were selected earlier and how many were 'busts' or failed to pan out as hoped because teams refused to let them sit and learn.

David Carr, Jamarcus Russell, Alex Smith and Michael Vick (never progressed as a passer).

If this was based solely on talent, I would take Luck or Peterson. But as I said, I expect Luck gone. And like others, I'm not content with drafting a CB at the 2nd overall pick and giving out something like $30-$40 million guaranteed to that position.

If it isn't an OT, it will be a QB. And unfortunately in this draft, there is no top 5-10 talent at the QB position. Even more, the QB talent is light after Luck, unless you are keen on drafting a statue like Mallett (if he comes out), or taking a chance on someone like Newton or Gabbert.

Palmer, Manning and Rivers are all successful recent examples of QBs going top 5, sitting the bench, and becoming very good QBs. Infact, I would guess if you compared 1st round QBs who sit the bench and learn versus those who are thrown to the wolves, the guys who ride the bench for a year or two would be much more successful.

so your willing to pass on Andrew Luck

how many years do you think Romo has left maybe four

you sit the guy for two years

thats JMO

I'm not sure if you were addressing me or not, but if you were here's my thought.

I think Luck is easily the consensus #1 pick this year. If the Cowboys end up finishing no. 2 or 3, I don't think they'll even have to make that decision of passing up Luck.

no was not adressing you but I agree with what your saying

UnoDallas, weren't you the guy telling everyone how great Dan LeFevoure would be and how he was going to be the best QB out of the bunch last year? Where is he now? Last I heard, he was cut by the Bears.

i could be wrong but that may have been R2A, saying he is the next romo

Nope, it was UnoDallas. Used search, found the thread. I'd say Uno's opinions on QBs are rather suspect.

yea I said it

hell he still might be good

and you spell that LeFevour

LeFevour was claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Bengals on September 5, 2010

i know everybody has a pet cat but i always look at what JJ will do and he will not select a QB in the 1st rd as we still have romo in his prime, its just not happening.

The best thing that could happen if they stay in the same spot is for Jake Locker to declare and having the Niners or Panthers fall in love with him...than flip picks and maybe add a second rounder.
Don't see Jerry drafting a QB.

Agreed. Any talk of drafting a QB in round 1 is ******** for the next few years. And this is coming from the #1 hate Romo fan.

As long as he's healthy and he's owed a kajillion dollars, Romo will be the QB of this team, whether or not you think he's a franchise QB (I don't, obviously).

As I asked, if the situation continues and we hold at the #2 pick, who are you going to be comfortable giving $30-$40 million guaranteed to?

A cornerback (Peterson, Amukamara)? Another WR (Green, Jones, etc.,)? A defensive end in a 3-4 (Clayborn, Dareus)?

The reality is, those are the type of guys we are going to be looking at that may actually have talent worthy of high pick. But can you justify putting huge money into another WR? Can you justify putting that money into a 3-4 end? Can you justify putting that into a CB, after the best CB in the league just got $32 million guaranteed?

Of course our ideal situation may be to trade back and hope we can pick up Peterson or Amukamara, but that isn't the situation we are looking at right now. It's simply who would you take with the 2nd overall pick.

I can justify putting money into a CB when I just saw David Garrard and the Jacksonville Freakin' Jaguars throw for a trillion yards and 4 TDs on my secondary on Sunday. I can justify putting money into a RB after watching Felix Jones be a complete wussy and seeing marion barber unable to extend a football 6 inches for a TD. I can justify putting money into an OL after watching THE ENTIRE LINE get whipped by one of the worst defenses in the league.

And this is how you hamstring your franchise for the future.

If you think it is justifiable in making a rookie CB likely the highest paid player at his position before he even takes a preseason snap, then I do not know about your line of thinking.

At RB, you have Steven Jackson who is the highest paid RB in the NFL, only getting $20 million guaranteed. But you are willing to go WELL above that for a player who has not played a down?

At the OL position, if there was a Jake Long or Joe Thoams in this draft, then PAY THE MAN! Unfortunately for us, there is no present lineman that has shown he is even worthy of a top 10 selection.

If this was Monopoly money, it would be alot easier for you though. :)

With the #2 pick in the draft, we do NOT take a QB..UNLESS Luck somehow someway does not go #1..Andrew Luck, by many, is considered the best QB prospect since Manning..

If we have a shot at Andrew Luck, which I dont think we will, we HAVE to take him..I am just as big of a fan of Romo as the next guy, but when you have a chance to take a prospect like Luck, you just CANNOT pass on him..You have to take the BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE in this situation..HAVE TO..

WIth all of that being said, in this scenario, we DO NOT have the #1 pick, we have the #2 pick..My pick would be Patrick Peterson at #2, because like I said previously, i think this team needs more playmakers...give me the BPA and that guy is Patrick Peterson..It just so happens, we also need a CB...so I think that is the perfect fit..

Seems to me that if you can draft another Troy Aikman, you do it.

I like Romo a lot, but ....

Dude, you are going to be making ANY player rich when you take them at #2. Are you not in favor of paying a top 5 pick like a top 5 pick? Hamstring the franchise, give me a break. Hamstringing the franchise is continuing to watch any of the bumbling morons I mentioned above instead of drafting better players to replace them with.
