Never mind the fact Zack Martin hasn't taken a single reported snap as an OT since joining the team last year?

Martin gets some time in at center with the second team, but never at tackle.

La'el Collins did take some snaps at RT at the start of the off-season program, but has focused exclusively at guard ( he added RG with the second team late in camp)from OTAs on.

Jason Garrett made it clear the coaching staff views Collins' best fit in the NFL is at G.

Doug Free missed the entire off-season rehabbing, it was the perfect opportunity to get Collins snaps there, if desired.

Darrion Weems is the swing tackle as things stand.

Tony Hills was just released today by Carolina and he was our swing tackle last season when Free was injured and Jermey Parnell was starting.

Interesting note on Hills. He was THE backup OT last year for 7 games (when Parnell started).

In the past we've been unwilling to move guys around. Maybe that changes with our current talent. I believe though that Free is the real swing guy with Collins or Martin as RT options. Free has LT experience. Collins and Martin played there in college but not at this level

Last season, Tyron Smith was on the Cowboys Hour and he opined Jermey Parnell had the most difficult job on the OL preparing each week as the swing tackle.

It's no easy thing taking scout team snaps during the week at LT and RT with the possibility of entering a game in either role.

Doug Free hasn't taken a snap at LT in four years.

I don't see him moving over to handle LT during a game should Tyron Smith go down, not even if the Trojan is expected to miss 2-4 weeks.

If it was a season ending injury, then sliding Free over would be considered, but Darrion Weems would still get the first chance.

He was fine but he was playing against 3rd string defenders.

The Niners game was a better test because he started. He was OK in that game also.

He has shown the required physical ability to get the job done. The question is if he can handle it mentally if he has to start a real game. It would help if he was playing next to a veteran Guard like Martin or Leary. I would like to see him play RT, but he has only played LT in the 3 preseason games.

The biggest problem for a guy like Weems is that he won't progress that much without playing in a real game. A player that is raw when he gets to the NFL can only progress up to a point with only practice and preseason games. Parnell progressed more in his 7 starts last season than in the 3 prior years of practice and preseason games.

Parnells problem wasn't setting an edge, he beat guys there easily. His problem was his hand techniques. When he stopped throwing jabs and started uppercutting guys with both hands he was a mauler.

I disagree about Weems physically demonstrating anything. He is about Doug Free strength wise with poorer feet. He is often turned and hanging on with one arm because hes given up his shoulder. He is going to need a lot of help. He's decent inline drive blocking but nothing special. I'm just hoping more reps improves his feet because I don't see him blowing assignments like say Bernadeau. I really don't like him when he's tired. He abandons technique and ends up straight legged and lunging.

What he is right now is not okay in my book. It's marginal. I would much rather have Martin/Collins play RT and Free play swing. Free was noticeably limping out there. Gibson is starting to come on. I don't have much hope for the waiver wire.

He's the leader of the offensive line. He probably knows the assignments of all the linemen and a lot about what the TE are doing.

He played two seasons at LT. It is a viable option.

I'm not saying they what they will or won't do but I won't be surprised if down the line Doug Free ends up our swing tackle.

Down the line Doug Free will have base salaries of $4M (cap hit $5.5M in 2016) and $5M (cap hit $6.5M in 2017).

Chaz Green is a complete unknown right now, but the team appears very high on the rookie Gator and Laurence Gibson looks like a keeper.

Darrion Weems will be a restricted free agent after this season and easy to keep, if warranted.

Zack Martin and La'el Collins are also RT options, but I don't expect either to get moved there. Nonetheless, it will always be an option.

Free may not make the 53 next year and 2017 seems a certainty.

Maybe another salary reduction could be agreed upon if Free loses his starting job in the future, I just think it's more likely he'll get flushed when that happens.

Especially if it involves more problems with his feet/ankles.

I'm fine with the paycut but with a salary cap that is going to be pushing $200m before too long $4-5m is not that egregious for a top offensive backup.

It could be handled, without question.

But that's a very expensive reserve.

Dallas hasn't even paid a back-up QB that much money.

And there might be younger, cheaper OT options on the roster at the same time.

Doug Free needs to stay healthy and play well.

If Free gives the team any reason to question his long term availability and viability now or in the future, the curtain will likely come down on his stay in 2016 or '17.

I hope Free has another year or two in him, but I'm not confident it will be so.
