Are the ghosts of Decembers past creeping in the shadows? Has Santa Claus decided we get a lump of coal in our stocking this year? Will our Christmas treats once again turn to bile in our stomachs? Is the brutal schedule ahead of the Cowboys going to mean yet another losing December?

No, and I am going to tell you why.

In a word, chemistry.

After the brutal ending to 2008 Jerry Jones and company acted swiftly to exorcise the demons who had haunted this team. Brad Johnson, out the door you noodle armed dinosaur and snitch. Pacman Jones, go make rain with your tears on Pros vs. Joes. Tank Johnson, the weakest tank ever. If they didn't produce or caused drama around this team, out the door they went.

The team even got rid of some quality guys like Zach Thomas, Greg Ellis, Kevin Burnett, Anthony Henry, and Chris Canty. Long time Safety and lightning rod Roy Williams traded stars for stripes.

Then began the work of refocusing and rebuilding the Dallas Cowboys. Job number one was the attitude in the locker room. Bring in guys like Gerald Sensabaugh, Igor Olshansky, and especially Keith Brooking. Why? Because they exude professionalism in their approach to the game. It rubs off.

When you put a Keith Brooking in a LB Corps next to a Bradie James you accomplish three things immediately. First, you add talent to a huddle and game plan. Second, there is leadership on the field. Finally, you have balance. No more can a team run to the opposite side of the field from Bradie because another run stuffing ILB is there.

We all know what Sensabaugh has added to the Defensive Backfield in terms of coverage ability. He's even managed an interception with one hand in a cast and tackling has not suffered. Mostly it has allowed the Corners to play more man coverage and this is where they excel.

On Offense the biggest change needed was health. They got more than just healthy. They got an attitude adjustment. The ball is being spread around and guys who don't see their stat lines blossom are more interested in wins. It also helps when a star emerges to ignite a team. It also helps when unsung guys quietly do their thankless jobs and don't pound their chests about it. It is a solid Offense as opposed to a narrow focused one of last year.

I think the best acquisition of the off season was the Special Teams Coach. No one can tell me this team is not inspired by his drive and passion. Our Special Teams guys not only fill the right coverage lanes, they hit, they wrap up, and they bring down return men. We have been blessed with better field position from our kicking units and our return units. There was a time I felt this was impossible.

You can pan the 2009 Draft as a Special Teams only crop. You can dislike the player moves that sent guys packing. You can dislike the Head Coach and his Victory Monday attitudes. You can't deny the results or the Chemistry of this team.

Nothing is derailing them. Not the media frantically searching for a schism. Not an internal implosion. The cancers are gone. Chemistry has cured that. There are no more distractions. That has been answered. Yes, they mattered. Thankfully they are gone.

Now, it's time to exorcise those ghosts. It's a brutal schedule, with three on the road and two at home. It is also 3 division games that will favor the Dallas Cowboys who are finally peaking at the right time instead of too soon.

Yeah, it's December, but the party is just getting started. If we avoid some critical injuries and continue to execute as this team has been this season, there won't be coal in the stocking. I doubt it will be gold, but I think we will all feel a sense of relief.

Bingo. Attitude is contagious. Its easy to say we needed some leaders on this team but you need leaders that set their example on and off the field. I haven't been inside of it but I know for a fact our locker room has an entirely different culture.

We also aren't quite as divided on offense and defense. One side of the ball was always quick to defer blame, and its easy to not play well as a team with essentially two head coaches - but they finally have a semblance of synergy about them. If we play to our potential on both sides of the ball for the next two months, no one can stop us - and that includes the mighty Saints.

SWEET!!

What worries me is that not only is it December but this is by far the toughest part of the schedule.

Pittsburgh proved last year if you can get through a really hard schedule, the playoffs will seem like just another game. I hope thats the same for our club this year.

Well that and having the refs paid off helps too.

So you're predicting above .500 over the last five games?

I think we have a good chance to go .500 or better. All of the December games worry me, but New Orleans more than the others. The team just has to keep playing together and we'll be alright.

Hos, Beautifully said my friend. It is in my nature to worry... so I am worrying about the oline. Last year I had a long worry list, Special teams, chemistry, leadership, direction, too many "special needs" players, the Secondary, the oline, coaching...I really should be thankful they left me atleast the oline to worry about.:D

Even if you put the NO game as a loss, we could still win 3 of the final 5.

Personally, I'm in Show Me mode. All this talk of change is fine and dandy, let's see it in action right now.

You ever work on an engine.
Trying to get to that hard to reach bolt.

You get in there at that angle and you think you got it - then it turns and it is not on the bolt. So you are making little 1/4 turns at best. Arghhhh....

THAT is where THIS team is.

THEN IT HAPPENS. You get on the bolt real good and you turn and turn and it finally comes off. The "win" you feel is where I feel we are only a few turns away.

Wow I always thought they put that bolt there just to piss me off...You mean to tell me it isn't just on the cars that I worked on.

Its december...

crap what have we lost so far?

Sounds like we've already dropped two in a row the way the media is grilling our coaches and players.

Can't wait to see their angle if we win 3 or 4. "Doesn't matter until they win a playoff game."Its unfair but I'm beyond the point of caring with the Cowboy bias.

Yes sir, I am. Ever since Game 2 I have been saying 12-4 and we win the NFC East. Not going to back off now. I will stomach 11-5, but no way we go 2-3 in December/January and finish 10-6.

I am out on the limb.

I'll go even farther out on the limb. I predicted around Week 12 or 13 last year that the Super Bowl would be the Battle of the Birds (Ravens vs. Cardinals).

I'm going to do it. Some Cowboys are going to the safari this year to hunt some Bengals. Cowboys vs. Bengals in Miami.

Flame away! It's cold outside anyway :D

And it's been a long December and there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can't remember all the times I tried to tell myself
To hold on to these moments as they pass

I agree with everything Hos said, and these are reasons that I am more hopeful heading into this December than I have been for some time. I think that equally important is the maturation of Romo. I think I've seen him develop into a more mature team leader than he has been in the past. He's dropped the bimbos, no more statements about "if losing a game is the worst thing that happens to me", no more sulking on the sideline during games. He is talking and acting like a QB should. AND he's cut down on the killer turnovers that were so devastating in the past.

And my goodness, Miles Austin for TO is such an upgrade on the team this year. He's more productive on the field, and what a nice addition his drive and attitude have been. He adds such a positive energy compared to the ego-centric, jabbering, back-stabbing jerk that is Terrell Owens.
