I will go on record as saying earlier in the draft process, I wasn't on board with taking a quarterback in the 1st round. I felt that with a couple of slight additions in Free Agency (Lamar Miller and maybe a CB or Safety), that we would be in a great spot to add 2-3 good young players in the draft who could make a difference, keep Romo healthy, and I believed we had a solid chance at winning the NFC.

But........ since we didn't do anything of note in Free Agency.....its just my belief that we have too many holes to fill this season to really make a push deep in the playoffs. I hope I'm wrong, but its just my opinion...

That being said.....I have started looking at the quarterbacks...primarily Wentz and Goff. I just don't get what people see in Wentz. Small school guy who played against subpar competition. But what really bothers me about him is his reads. I would really urge people to go look at his tape (i.e. youtube videos), and look at his eyes. They lock in on his first target, and rarely if ever waiver. This is something you can get away with when playing teams like Weber State and South Dakota State, but we are talking the NFL here. The best players in the world. There isn't one successful quarterback in the league who can't make several reads on a pass play. I think the guy has bust written all over him.

Now go look at Goff's film. He is consistantly throwing to his 2nd and 3rd options if you look at the tape. He seems head and shoulders better than Wentz. Not to mention he played against much better competition. I don't even think its close between the two of them. If we take a qb in the 1st round, I just hope its Goff. He seems to be a much better player.

That is the way you see him yet seems others view him different

With a body type that is as prototypical as they come and a background in reading the entire field and working through progressions, Wentz will immediately check a couple of boxes that many college quarterbacks won't be able to check. While his arm strength is OK, he can still make all the throws and he can make them with accuracy. His ability to escape pressure and pick up first downs with his feet will be yet another check mark in his favor. Wentz is still in a developmental phase after just two years at an FCS program, but has the mental and physical building blocks of a future, franchise quarterback.

I just let the guys who get hired and fired to evaluate talent make those decisions.. I know this much we need a QB asap. And scouts say Wentz and Goff are franchise type quys. Lynch is more of a project..

All these QBs are projects and need developing. Lynch could be the best in the group when it's said and done

I agree and posted something very similar a couple weeks ago... that Goff ha proven he can read through his progressions, and that Wentz may have that ability, but has not proven it because he has played in a "one read" system.

One Player will get you back into the Playoffs next season barring another Romo injury and that player is "Zeke".
If your playing for now than he is your answer and anybody that says otherwise is crazy. But in saying this its all
focused on now, if you want to plan more on the future than Goff or Wentz.

Honestly I could be on board either way !!!

STRENGTHS
Tall with an athletic, proportional build that is made for the NFL position. Played in a pro-style attack with plenty of snaps under center. Asked to make NFL throws and showed he could do it. Stands tall in the pocket and delivers with a relatively high release point. Keeps ball high and tight in the pocket and can uncork it quickly with tight, sharp release and little wasted motion. Throws catchable ball with tight spiral. Naturally accurate passer. Sees lurking linebackers underneath and throws receivers open to safest spot in the passing window. Able to change arm slots and still throw a strike. Has plus deep ball accuracy and touch. Calm in pocket and has no problems sitting in and taking a hit to complete a pass. Excelled in structured passing attack that required him to read the entire field. Has athleticism to escape pressure and hurt defenses with his legs. Already able to feel pressure on the edges and slide around in pocket without dropping his eyes. Adept in play-action game at selling fakes and quickly finding safeties to help determine where to go with the ball. Intelligent with long list of academic achievements. Should be able to process and handle an NFL playbook quickly. Can play pitch and catch all day long against zone coverage.

Goff is ahead of the curve in this class when it comes to keeping his eyes downfield and going through his progressions. I have a hard time getting on the Wentz bandwagon the same way. Wentz has all the ability you'd ever want, though, in a guy you were going to develop. It's just an open question as to whether or not he'll develop. Goff's the much safer pick.

A QB gets pushed way up almost every year in the last month or two.

  • Tebow in 2010 at 24
  • Jake Locker as the 8th overall in 2011
  • Blaine Gabbert at 10th in 2011
  • Christian Ponder at 12th, same year
  • Brandon Weeden at 22 in 2012
  • EJ Manuel at 9th overall in 2013
I'm not saying Wentz is these guys but when they get pushed up so much late in the process, I say be very careful

Someone in the CBZ pointed out earlier today that the Cowboys may have really liked Wentz when it looked like he could be had at 34 or with a short trade-up. The hype train went into overdrive.
4th overall??
1st overall (or basically our who whole draft and some of 2017's) for some here??
really?

One man's opinion. But look at the tape, and how often he throws to his first read. Again, not saying he's not capable of it, but he just has not shown it much.

Spot on! Too bad it seems like Jerry and Stephen over value hand size.

He's got really good measurables and apparently a great demeanor about him.

But those downsides... I would take him in the second. Not the 4th overall pick.

Goff is the better player now with smaller downsides.

No offense to you, but I am tired of this "reading the entire field and working through progressions" garbage. It simply isn't true at all. He may have played in more of an NFL style offense, but he certainly rarely if ever made more than one or two reads in the tape I watched. He also relies heavily on his legs, not just to escape pressure, but when/because he isn't used to scanning the defense.

He's got a great built and huge upside, but this "NFL style offense" thing is being blown way out of proportion. I already schooled another posted on how frequently Wentz was actually in shotgun too. Definitely not at the same clip as Goff, but far more than most prototypical NFL offenses.

*Edit: Upon reading further it seems I was not the first to argue this point. Didn't mean to pile on.

I kind of noticed that about Wentz after watching him more closely. He is a gamer though and he has physical traits. Id take him or Goff and be happy.

Um, this has been explained many times. Wentz *appears* to lock onto his first read sometimes because most of his reads are determined pre-snap. He excels at reading the defense and knowing which receiver should be open -- even if that receiver is not the primary receiver on the play. What appears to be his first read after the snap might actually be the third option before the snap. But because he recognizes and understands the difference, he knows that the third option will most likely be the open man, so it becomes his first read after the snap. When that guy doesn't end up being open, he still has the ability to quickly go through his reads or even take off running.
