Werder: Dallas Cowboys have lowered the bar

I thought it was a good article... but...

I hate when the media complains about players not talking them and make it seem like they are too chicken to talk.... maybe they just don't like talking to you schmucks

I think the article is essentially spot on. Because he's negative about our underacheiving team, he's hated by a lot of fans. That's their problem, not his. I don't even see how any could argue against very much of it. We've hear it all before, but it's another good summarization of the problem that is Wade Phillips, as enabled by Jerry Jones.

When the season is over and Phillips is fired, the same fans that have defended him and Jerry Jones will find some sort of illogical justification as to how they were still right about it all. And they'll - as usual - be dead wrong.

Except its a touchy-feely argument that means nothing, isn't supported by the players, and can't readily be disproven by anybody. Go figure.

Meanwhile, you can look directly at a stat like turnover ratio and see exactly why the team is losing games it shouldn't be losing. For the thousandth time, fixing those problems do a world more good than fixing the teams 'collective attitude towards losing games as it's influenced by the teams coaches'. Whatever the hell that (I paraphrased, but that's basically the point) supposed to mean.

It's not clear to me how wanting the actual solution to the problem addressed instead of something that's almost completely unrelated addressed makes anyone an apologist for anything. I do see how it's not as much fun as railing about accountability, though.

When I was in high school, we had this AP biology teacher for 2nd period who would always let the class play computer games while 2-3 people made a massive McDonalds breakfast run for the entire class. This happened at least 3 times a week. For the other days when he started off serious about having an actual teaching session, we could easily deviate him from lecture by just asking some random question about his dog or his passion for motorcycles. We didn't ever have homework, nor did we have to take tests on time. This was the BEST CLASS EVER at the time. He was voted Teacher of the Year by pretty much every class to have graduated from that school since 1987. A few of us ended up doing really well on the AP exam (which ended up happening each year), so the guy was never really questioned about his job performance. Those who weren't innately smart/lucky on exams would go on get killed in college biology because they didn't really know anything.

Of course the players love Wade. We loved that biology teacher, but most of us were too young and dumb to realize that it was gonna bite us on the behind eventually.

I'm not saying that you need someone like Tom Coughlin in here. I am saying that these players currently have an apologist as a coach and it's hindering their development. Wade isn't protecting them from the media and others by defending them so openly. He's actually crippling them. We're being exposed by teams that are better coached who don't make these stupid, untimely mistakes. That's why we're losing to teams with far less talent. I actually love Wade as a defensive coordinator. I hate Garrett as an anything on this team and would rather him gone foremost to the be honest.

Still, I don't understand why people are discounting the value of disciplined coaching. Lots of teams will bench players who make mistakes, or at least create an environment where the players are scared to deviate from anything other than disciplined. Wade doesn't have that power really because Jerry wouldn't allow it. I think that's why so many frustrated fans actually don't blame it on Wade. Either way...there's no true accountability here and I think that focus needs to come from the top.

We'd still just have Switzer as a coach if these things are not as important as some people on this site are stressing.

Total garbage article. His first conclusion was absolutely illogical and incorrect.

But I'm not surprised so many agree with it.

Btw, how is that Crayton is better than Roy Williams article from last year working out for you, Ed?

Uhhhh...Crayton's play last season when that article was written pretty much dropped a steaming doober on anything Roy did at the time.

Crayton could actually run routes and catch the ball. I have never coached a wide receiver or scouted one for a pro football team, but I would think that running and catching are important skills to have for that particular position.

Werder has never spoken anything but the truth about the Cowboys.

The koolaid drinkers just haven't liked it.

He's not sweet and soft like some here want it.

It's not just the franchise that lacks toughness, it's the fanbase. I've never seen such a fragile bunch, clustered in a bunker.

As per the Crayton > Roy Williams...tell me who wasn't saying the same thing six weeks ago...from Aikman to Irvin to Deion to 80% of national pundits and most of this board.

Im not a big fan of Werder but he I feel like he made a lot of really quality points. Wade is a joke and so are the Dallas Cowboys because of his poor leadership and inability to hold his players accountable.

Why isn't anybody mad is what i want to know? i want to see Jerry, players and coaches, beating on the table and saying we going to get this fixed. yet all we hear is the same crap after every loss. it's like listening to the same old broken record. somebody needs to throw a fit.

I've actually become more of a Wade fan over the last year, I don't know what to think of this article other than it makes me depressed. I have less hope they can pull out of this after reading it.

While the players are under no obligation to speak with the media after a tough defeat, I think it speaks to the lack of leadership and lack of accountability that the few players mentioned in the article that are stand up players after a tough defeat - are not the most integral members of the team or guys that should be looked at for leadership.

I hate Werder too, but you would almost think he was a Cowboys fan after reading that article. He touched on almost everything about Wade that annoys us. Good piece Ed, but the apologist will be quick to point out the players like playing for Wade, so he is a good coach :lmao:

People liked playing for Wayne Fonts which is who Wade reminds me off

Its always the case, when team craps out, every bad thing about the coach is magnified. Ed has valid points, but his point about BP's palyers is totally nonsense. Quite of few them are no longer on team. 2007 might have been BP's team, but 2009 for sure wasn't.

2010 is entirely different, who knows where they will end up, although right now it looks like it will be in the dumper.

I have never been a big believer in coaching is end all and be all, like quite a few suscribe to. I think Players are most important part of puzzle and then coaching. But most of Ownership/leadership from Ownership onwards is most important thing.

Jerry has failed since Jimmy to bring in a legitimate coach. But so has most of NFL. Seems like Rooney's are the only ones that consistantly bring in coaches who are good, since 70s I guess.

Well I remember are 13-3 year a lot of people on this board said the Cowboys needed to clean up the penalties, some of the sloppy play and the turn overs because in the playoffs we would lose out. Guess what they lost to the Giants because of those exact things. The cracks have been showing for years they showed up in the 44-6 beating by the Eagles in the win and you are in the playoffs; the issue is not that they had lost but they where out of that game before the 1st qtr clock hit 00:00.

Dallas is the laughing stalk of the NFL East... Supposed talent filled with only 1 playoff win in the last five or six years.

Hate Werder if you want, but he NAILED Wade and Jerry and the star players on this team with that article. This team is STARVING for a true leader at the HC position.

This line was interesting... "If I'm infuriated when the Cowboys lose, and the only guys available in the locker room to explain are Spears, Igor Olshansky, Roy E. Williams and Orlando Scandrick how must those players truly feel about their higher-paid, more celebrated teammates disappearing into training rooms, meeting rooms or players' lounges?"

As much as I dislike Werder I thought it was a solid article with some good points. I agree that it read like a ticked off Cowboys fan wrote it.

I'd like to turn a blind eye from the issues and hope everything will be OK and that winning will make everything go away but things will never get fixed if I don't recognize them as a fan. I don't hate Wade as a person. I dislike him as a HC, having seen it in Buffalo and now watching it from Buffalo to Dallas. Has he won a bunch of games in Dallas, yes. What I think is that he has maxed out his skills as a head coach. His skill set as a head coach have grown and led this team as far as its going to go. It's not his fault because this is the best he can really do...this IS the top of his game, and for our purposes and the Dallas organization it is just not good enough. With that kind of culture going on maybe the players also think they've reached the top of their game and can't do anymore than they currently are...until someone else shows them there's a whole other level they CAN reach. In a building that has 10 stories Wade's elevator only reaches the 6th floor. Find someone who can take these players to the penthouse.

In what world do the players judge their peers by how much they talk to the media? We know for a fact that the players love Barber, and he doesn't ever talk to these losers.

So no, Werder, you being frustrated that the players avoid you after losses means nothing to the team. Nothing whatsoever.

Werder is basically a more tenured JFE. He's hated for years that we haven't sucked like he thinks we should. This is the exact same type of thing he's said since Parcells left, only it looks better now because we're losing. But the stopped clock being right twice a day doesn't make it an accurate timepiece.

Great analogy and great point. There is so much more these players can achieve but they simply do not know what it is with the current regime in place. :hammer:

Thanks. I wish Wade's elevator went higher but it just doesn't.
