Were Michael Irvin, Keyshawn, et al ultimately right about Roy Williams

A lot of people including myself thought these guys were unnecessarily piling on Roy Williams when he hadn't really gotten a opportunity to prove himself with the Cowboys. My take on it at the time was that they were mistakingly criticizing Roy Williams as a player rather than as a Detroit Lion. Upon reflection I think I was wrong about that.

Although I think a lot of the criticism was over the top, I for one certainly see things more their way now.

Roy Williams is not a quality #2 WR in the NFL right now. He does not generate separation and cannot make the proper route adjustments in our system. His hands are below average to boot. He is an ineffective although willing blocker for the running and passing games. He does not have the ability to threaten people downfield - similar to Crayton in that regard despite legitimate 4.4 speed.

I really don't think he is a very good player. His ultimate advantage is size but he lacks the strength, hands and determination to use it effectively.

He is a guy who put up some yards on a bad team running a gimmick offense. You see this all the time in the NBA with a fringe starting player on a good team can score 20 ppg on a bad team because they don't have any good players to share the ball with.

If we weren't tied to that contract I would release him this offseason so we can bring in a better player. Unfortunately, we owe him another $21M guaranteed so Jerry is unlikely to do this just yet. I do think he needs to earn his playing time next year. I would strongly suggest we draft a WR in about the 4th round who is raw but has great speed and a great work ethic from a small school.

I really think teams will continue to blitz us, double Miles and leave the #2 in a 1 on 1 situation until we have a #2 who can really make them pay for it. I do wonder if Ogletree can serve this role for us next season. We need to start worrying more about the team and less about Roy Williams and his alleged potential. He is really nothing more than David Terell - the Michigan WR who used to play with Drew Henson.

I'm so over this. Austin is the big play threat, and Crayton fills his role so well. I don't care what RW does anymore, I no longer care about the WR corps in general. I think they will be just fine.

I share the same sentiment. Crayton does so well as a slot guy...I really like him being the "#3" if it means he's got slot matchups.

RW is a poor route runner and gets ZERO separation. I was a big proponent of bringing him here. I was wrong.

The Romo/Williams thing doesn’t work and showed very few positive signs of ever working. He won’t be cut or traded and i believe this will continue to hold back Romo/Garrett and the Cowboys chances of improving offensively for next season. Maybe if Garrett leaves, then RW might get a new chance to prove himself.

There's a very good reason why I get called out. Do you know why I never call you out?
you call plenty of people out you just don't say names all the time. just look at your touch of crapility post. you took several hidden shots at people in that and even though I don't think any of them were directed at me it just ruined that post for me. you don't call me out cause you think you're above that so to say or i'm not worth it. I just felt like calling you out on a bum of a player since you like to take so many shots at people these days.

Roy needs a sports shrink.

He might be salvagable with some counseling.

He obviously has the physical skills. He has shown, albeit occasionally, that he can put the skills to use.

He just can't do it consistently. Maybe, deep down, he doesn't really want it.

When the play maker called RW out early on for not taking his help it told you everything you needed to know about RW. Mainly that he has no desire to be better than he is now, an occasional red zone threat. Too bad for RW, yesterday showed that his QB has given up on him, which does not bode well going forward.

See, I don't think he has those skills anymore. In college and earlier in his pro career, he did. Remember how he made Aaron Glenn look like a fool when we played them? And he was really athletic in college. He ran some great 100m times even in high school.

But it's like he's lost all that. Now he's just a big guy with average speed and zero quickness. Very strange.

Like I was saying once before, maybe Roy Williamses just don't age well. :(

We have a season and a half of proof. It's not just a sophomore slump.
