What I'm getting at is in today's NFL players don't stay on teams very often.

We are fans of the team, not the players anymore. Yes we still root for the players but it doesn't feel the same.

I really am sick of free agency, I like FA to tweak rosters, not to revamp.

I like it when teams show respect for players that played for them, like extending there contract.

I don't feel safe buying jerseys anymore, it seems the player will be gone in a year or two and playing on a different team.

I like to go into a season with basically the same guys you have the year before with a few modifications.

I liked Key I thought he would end his career here, but after two great seasons we show him the door. Glover same thing. Coakley had a great CAREER here and we showed him the door. And it seems we might show the best lineman in NFL history the door, its just sad really.

I don't like playing roulette with different QB, WR, LB, CB, year after year.

But this is just one guy's opinion.

I still enjoy being a fan of individual players just like back in the glory days when you would draft a guy and there was a good chance that he would spend his entire career with ypur organization. However, just like back then, it will always remain a team-first interest. Even when I rooted my heart & soul out for Troy through the good times and the bad, I never put him above the team. It has always been about this:

:star:

......and no matter what players come and what players go, it will always remain so.

Unfortunately, this isn't the NFL of 10 years ago....or even 5 years ago.

It's really hard to root for the players over the teams nowadays too because of the popularity of college football... I remember I HATED Roy Williams, especially after that play he made on Simms in the UT v. OU game. But now i love the guy. There's tons of examples of this.

I care about the team the most, but their are certain players I will always cheer for like Ladanian Tomlinson. I never buy a guys jersey unless I am convinced he is a key part of the teams future.

I still am a fan of every cowboy but it is just different than I would like it to be because it seems every play may get replaced before his time is up.

I don't know, I'm just shooting the chit

Yeah I put the team first, but I like to root for the same players year after year.

By the way great name.

The reason for all of this is THE Salary CAP. This magical line that has moved like 5 times since it started.

the sad thing about being a fan nowadays is that you have to refer to the cap on any signing or keeping of a player. of cap casualties now is the FA market.

Look the reference to all the threads cap room and over paying marginal players. remember back in the 90's when the upstart Cowboys needed a certain amount of players to make them competitive. Haley was needed for QB pressure, Thomas Everett for FS, and Novacek was brought in via plan B FA. Now if there was a cap back then you bet people complain about over paying and reaching on marginal players.

I posted that Simmons article earlier today that touches on this topic, it's a good read.

I'm a huge fan of the players...

I'm a huge fan of:
Drew Henson, Roy Williams, Terence Newman, DeMarcus Ware, Terry Glenn, Keyshawn Johnson, Jason Witten, Julius Jones, and Dat Nguyen. Not to mention La'Roi Glover.

Yeah, I agree man. I like to see a close knit TEAM of players. I too thought Key would retire as a Cowboy. Hopefully we'll re-sign him..... Everything is about $$$ these days.

I basically cheer for the uniforms.

I have my "favorite" players, but I have no loyalty to them, just as they have no loyalty to me. When they leave the team, I really could care less, which is kind of sad. Certainly much different than when I grew up watching the Cowboys in the 70's.

I really hate free agency, its out of control.

it's better than the NBA, high profile players get traded like it's nothing

Nope. It's Free Agency that is the culprit. The players wanted it, so the owners got the cap as a trade off.
Now....(as evidenced by the recent labor trouble) the players want that cap raised and raised and raised.

They want all the money and the freedom to move anywhere they like. No loyalty to any city or team.

We root for the laundry as Jerry Seinfeld would say. I had this feeling the day we lost Ken Norton, Jr. to the 49ers. I loved Ken...he was the defensive vesion of Michael Irvin. The day he left is the day I realized football was a changed game and that I would have to accept that it was not going to be a revolving door. Now my passion for football is not what it once was, I enjoy the games and rooting for the the Cowboys, but I don't have the same emotional ties to it anymore.

I couldn't agree more.

In addition to what you've stated, teams have lost their identity.

Steel Curtain, Purple People Eaters, Fearsome Foursome, Killer B's, Doomsday...gone. Teams don't keep players around long enough to develop a personality.

It's all about $$$

Everything has been geared toward bringing in more fans, fair weathered as they might be.

Remember how as kids we would run around the yard pretending we were Staubach, Dorsett, Danny White, Emmitt or Aikman? (I thought I would cover several generations there) Now, here we are all playing Parcells and Jones. We have gone from players to coach/owners.

I'm kind of the same way. I cheer for the uniform not the player. Sure you have someplayers that stand out more than others, but this isnt the 90s anymore players come and go, you have to move with the program.
