1. Carolina Panthers- QB Andrew Luck: Stanford
Despite the fact that the Panthers took QB Jimmy Clausen in the second round last season, it will be nearly impossible to pass on a potential blue-chip caliber quarterback in Andrew Luck. He’s one of the best quarterback prospects to come out in years and gives the Panthers a guy they know they can build their team around from day one.
2. Denver Broncos- DL Nick Fairley: Auburn
Simply put, Fairley has been as dominant as any defensive lineman in the country this season. He’s a tall, long-armed kid with good initial explosion off the snap, uses his violent hands well to fight off blocks and does a good job of routinely finding the football. Plus, with questions surrounding the Broncos defensive scheme for next year, he gives them some needed versatility and has the ability to play all over a defensive line.
3. Buffalo Bills- QB Cam Newton: Auburn
The Bills seems like a perfect fit for Newton. He’s the kind of tall, strong-armed quarterback who can spin the football through the nasty winds in Buffalo. He’s the kind of athlete who can create with his legs and hide some of the deficiencies behind a poor Buffalo offensive line. And he has the opportunity to come in and learn from a real pro in current starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.
4. Cincinnati Bengals- DE Da’Quan Bowers: Clemson
Cincinnati is in a situation where it can sit back and take the best player available. However, after really taking a step back defensively in 2011, getting a potential big-time pass-rushing threat makes a lot of sense to pair up with DE Carlos Dunlap. Bowers really took his game to another level as a junior and the idea of rushing Dunlap and Bowers up off the edge for years to come is rather intriguing.
5. Arizona Cardinals- CB Patrick Peterson: LSU
Quarterback is a major need here, but I think the Cards address their QB situation via free agency. Therefore, with the one elite cornerback in this year’s draft still on the board, don’t be shocked to see Arizona make a play for Peterson. He’s a tall, strong corner with impressive fluidity for a guy his size and great ball skills. Plus, he adds a dynamic element as a punt return man as well.
6. Cleveland Browns- WR A.J. Green: Georgia
The Browns need to add some type of playmaker to that offense and Green is a perfect fit. He’s a tall, lean athlete who can stretch the field vertically, go up and make a play on the football and is a really fluid route runner for such a big guy. Plus, he gives QB Colt McCoy a go-to target as Green can make plays on the football even when he’s covered up, as I expect him to mature into one of the league’s top receivers early in his NFL career.
7. San Francisco 49ers- OLB/DE Robert Quinn: North Carolina
Quinn was in my view the best pass rusher in the nation coming into the 2010 season. He was explosive off the snap, had the burst and flexibility to drop his pad level and turn the corner, could counter off his speed rush and had a real savvy to his game for such a young kid. Now, there are some questions that need to be ironed out because of his involvement with the agent scandal. However, if he just comes clean and teams get a good vibe from him, I think he has the ability to still go high and mature into a dynamic pass rusher in the league, either a stand-up backer or defensive end.
Mallett has struggled at times this year, but his arm may be too good to ignore.
8. Tennessee Titans- QB Ryan Mallett: Arkansas
With the Vince Young news coming out Wednesday, it looks like it could end up being a quarterback by default here. Mallett has the skill set to make all the throws and forces defenses to cover the entire field. He’s a similar kind of pocket passer to former Titans QB Kerry Collins, who could be brought back for another season and end up being a very good mentor for Mallett as he develops in the league.
9. Dallas Cowboys- DL Cameron Jordan: Cal
Offensive line is a big option here and USC OT Tyron Smith could end up being in play. But as of now I like DE Cameron Jordan to fill a need as a potential five-technique in the Cowboys 3-4 defense. The guy can anchor vs. the run, uses his hands well to shed blocks and gives Dallas another pass-rushing option from the defensive line. Plus, he could certainly kick inside in nickel situations and is one of the safer defensive linemen in this year’s class.
10. Washington Commanders- WR Julio Jones: Alabama
Again, quarterback could end up being an option here and a guy like Jake Locker makes a lot of sense for what Mike Shanahan wants to do on offense. However, after his struggles this year, I have a tough time seeing Locker still going in the top ten. Receiver is another major question mark and Jones is in my view the best three-step route runner in the draft and can consistently create after the catch. He has the ability to add some much-needed stability to their receiving corps.
