DeCamillis at practice again

Joe DeCamillis is simply amazing.

The Dallas Cowboys special teams coach is at the team's second week of OTAs.

He made an inspirational appearance coaching here last week too.

He is as colorful as ever. Joe Trahan and I were just talking about how he would have been a star on HBO's Hard Knocks if he was with the team last season.

And they can use his vivid vocabulary.

Of course DeCamillis was among a dozen people hurt in the team's Valley Ranch indoor practice facility collapse May 2.

The Cowboys are holding their offseason workouts at Standridge Stadium in Carrollton while the investigation and repairs are completed at Valley Ranch.

Arrested Cowboys fullback on field

A Dallas Cowboys rookie who was arrested for taking a throwing star and knife to Love Field is on the field for Cowboys practice today.

Asaph Schwapp, 22, is a rookie free-agent fullback from Notre Dame.

He was arrested Friday for carrying a prohibited weapon.

Schwapp was released from the Dallas County Jail seven hours later on a $1,500 bond, jail officials said.

Read more about the arrest here.

It's all almost moot. He's unlikely to make the Cowobys roster with incumbent fullback Deon Anderson probabl the only fullback that will make the team.

Cowboys DBs having hard time catching

One of the criticisms of the Dallas Cowboys secondary in recent years has been that they don't get enough interceptions.

Judging by a simple pass defense drill at today's OTA they're still struggling with catching would-be interceptions.

Terence Newman, Pat Watkins and Orlando Scandrick all dropped lobs.

It's not a good sign, especially since this is a low-intensity drill.

As a result, several of the defensive backs have been doing push ups as punishment. Secondary coach Dave Camp has been imploring his guys to catch the ball.

Crayton, Holland, Sensabaugh work with first units

Wide receiver Patrick Crayton, left guard Montrae Holland and safety Gerald Sensabaugh are all working with first units on offense and defense.

Crayton will battle to hold on to that spot with competition from Miles Austin. Holland is starting while Kyle Kosier works to return from an injury.

Sensabaugh was signed as a free agent and is the likely starter with Ken Hamlin at safety.

Cowboys receivers making plays

The Dallas Cowboys receivers are looking strong against the team's secondary.

In team drills, Travis Wilson, who was on the practice squad last season is getting lots of reps with the first and second team, made a nice over the middle catch.

Roy Williams had a nice deep sideline catch, as did Patrick Crayton. Williams and Martellus Bennett also made nice end zone grabs.

Head coach Wade Phillips looked at his secondary players, raised his hands and said, "first guy to make a play."

what's the point of making DBs doing push up when they drop INTs. The penalty should be catching 50-100 balls from the JUG machine for each dropped INT.

That's what I was thinking.

Would seem to make more sense.

Wilson is my prediction to take the 5th receiver spot from Stanback.

Agreed, unless we pick up a cheap veteran in August.

I'd think that Wilson would easily be the most polished out of Ogletree and M Johnson.

why cant our DBs catch?.I hope our rookie DBs record is a good sign that this will change for the better.we cant keep winning with a negative turnover ratio.

well Watkins is probably gone anyways, so that just leaves Newman and Scandrick with hands of stone

they do pushups because it doesn't interrupt the OTAs that much

there are still other workouts to do

These drills favor the receivers, but still. We've spent a lot of money and draft choices on the secondary and they are getting challenged by a collection of undrafted free agents and practice squad players.

I mean after the day's practice is done.

Why not make them work on the JUGS machine or catch passes as "punishment"?

With as much money as they make, the punishment should be $1000 fine per ball they drop.

:)

I am so sick of the pushups thing...pushups don't help you catch the ball....how about logging some time on the juggs(sp?) machine or something...

and oh goody...Coach Campo imploring them to catch the ball - glad he thought of that...

forgive me, I am just tired of our inability to make plays on the ball and our approach to fixing it...

EDIT: Muhast beat me to it...

I would say both is needed some form of punishment and players spending more time working with the juggs machine. Are we really going to get after the staff for handing down a form of punishment?

yhea, we're all nitpicking, but running 40 yard sprints and push-ups probably wouldn't be as effective as actually working on catching the ball as punishment (at the end of practice).

I would says working on the juggs is needed and would help the other stuff is the punishment in front of their peers. I see nothing wrong with that. People moan about coach cupcake then get upset because the staff is handing out a punishment? Both are needed things that can help you improve as well as things that represent punishment

Do we know that they will not be getting more time on the jugs machine? All we do know is they were called out during practice
