Defensive back Mike Jenkins may have found the quickest way to tick off his head coach.
Late in the third quarter of the Cowboys playoff win over the Eagles Jenkins picked off a Donavon McNabb pass and during his return it appeared as though he tried to lateral the ball to Terence Newman. DeSean Jackson got his hands on the ball and stole it away.
When asked if it was a lateral, head coach Wade Phillips said, "I hope not."
Then he went on to tell us just how anti-lateral he is. "We've been on 'em all year that's something we don't do. Its something I've stopped practice before, I know its surprising, but I've berated some people for lateraling the ball," said Phillips. So, he actually does let his players have it, who knew? The power of the lateral. He's got a point, though. Its not as if this is the Super Bowl 35 champion Baltimore Ravens who had next to no offense.
"If we get it we need to keep it," said Phillips. "Its hard enough to get the football, so just keep it when you get it. Our offense is good enough to take it from there."
You could clearly see nose tackle Jay Ratliff giving Jenkins an earful as he helped him up off the turf. So don't expect any lateraling in the Metrodome, should Brett Favre throw one up for grabs and the Cowboys pick it off.
