Defensive back Mike Jenkins may have found the quickest way to tick off his head coach.

Late in the third quarter of the Cowboys playoff win over the Eagles Jenkins picked off a Donavon McNabb pass and during his return it appeared as though he tried to lateral the ball to Terence Newman. DeSean Jackson got his hands on the ball and stole it away.

When asked if it was a lateral, head coach Wade Phillips said, "I hope not."

Then he went on to tell us just how anti-lateral he is. "We've been on 'em all year that's something we don't do. Its something I've stopped practice before, I know its surprising, but I've berated some people for lateraling the ball," said Phillips. So, he actually does let his players have it, who knew? The power of the lateral. He's got a point, though. Its not as if this is the Super Bowl 35 champion Baltimore Ravens who had next to no offense.

"If we get it we need to keep it," said Phillips. "Its hard enough to get the football, so just keep it when you get it. Our offense is good enough to take it from there."

You could clearly see nose tackle Jay Ratliff giving Jenkins an earful as he helped him up off the turf. So don't expect any lateraling in the Metrodome, should Brett Favre throw one up for grabs and the Cowboys pick it off.

Interesting...

Just on the thread title, I'm listening to the Cowboys Hour with Spears and Crayton right now and they both agree that what really gets Wade angry are mental mistakes. When he says "mistakes are on me", what he means is physical mistakes -- as long as you're giving effort, he can take those. But mental mistakes are your responsibilty because that's just a matter of studying and knowing your assignments.

It's a great episode, btw. I recommend downloading it from DC.com tomorrow when they put it up. They're talking about Wade and being accountable to their teammates and lots of good stuff. Let's just say that the attitude of this team right now is top-notch all the way around.

Not suprising that Wade does not like laterals...considering his playoff past...

Wonder what he was thinking when Jenkins did that.

I just finished rewatching the game. I didn't notice Ratliff when I was watching live, but it looked like he was about to knock Jenkins upside the head...he was pissed!

Jenkins gets a case of the stupids at times and here I was blaming a nearby T-New for trying to goad Jenkins into a lateral.

Wow. I understand his point. This is a stark contrast to Parcells, who used to preach to the defense to think about touchdowns every time they touch the ball.

To be honest I'm a bit conflicted, bad things can happen on that lateral but some awfully good things can happen too.

...the good thing happened already...we got the pick.

You don't try to improve on perfection by doing something desperate. That's why Wade is so angry about it.

It's about fundamental football and team oriented football.

What Jenkins did was make another transition of the football which is not sound fundamentally and he took the ball away from Romo and the offence which is not team oriented.

Over and over again you always hear coaches from pop warner to NFL yelling at players to just fall on a fumble instead of trying to pick it up on the run and losing the opportunity to gain the ball.

Players retort that they are just trying to make a play when they fail to realize the play was to gain possession of the ball.

In a rarity, I agree with Wade. I don't agree with laterals at all.

Turnovers are such precious commodities, its stupid to waste them with low percentage plays like laterals. Unless your offense is completely inept.

Call me conservative, but I really wouldn't care if our CBs just fell down after making a pic, barring large amounts of open field. The turnover is just too important.

...thousands of football coaches all over North America are nodding in agreement with you right now.

Some of my favorite all-time NFL plays have involved defensive teams scoring on a fumble or interception return that included a lateral.

The Vikings had one back in the early 1970's, it happened during a snow game, and it was blind lateral. A thing of beauty. I'm sure some of the long term NFL fans here remember the play.

So when I watched the Jenkins-T-New attempt, I cut Jenkins some slack for thinking aggressively and going for a knockout play.

But if Wade constantly hammers it into the players' heads not to do this sort of thing, #21 and #41 truly had no business trying to do what they tried to do.

The only time I have seen Wade get upset is when Newman gives up long passes.

On the other hand, the thing he loves the most.... missed FG by opponents.
