We've tried to build the O-Line through the draft over the years, but have failed. Jacob Rogers was a 2nd round pick, Peterman a 3rd rounder, Marten a 3rd rounder. All failed. I hoping Free can show flashes of what he did in 2007 preseason and hoping McQ can play right tackle.
Also, we had some bigger fish to fry for the first and 2nd round picks in the past few years. In 2004 we needed a tailback. In 2005 we needed 3-4 personnel. In 2006 we needed more 3-4 personnel. In 2007 we needed Wade's 3-4 personnel. This year we needed a CB and some tailbacks.
I hate to harp on this, but we can really put a lot of the blame on Zimmer because every year we kept giving him first round picks and ever year he needed more help. Now with Wade running the defense, the defense doesn't need those first rounders as much and we can spend a first rounder on different positions. While I still believe there's improvements to be made on defense, I think they can find these improvements later in the draft with ease. Things like another 3-4 DE or a 3-4 NT (and move Ratliff to DE), a quality cover safety and an athletic ILB are routinely found in the later rounds in the draft and it doesn't seem like an absolute necessity like it did under Zimmer.
We may use our early picks to select somebody from one of those positions, but it seems that if we do, it's probably because the player was the BPA instead of trying to fill a hole.
