What about Bell?

Bell doesn't need leverage anymore. He's not coming back thanks to a loophole they found in the CBA franchise tag wording.

You can't accrue a season if you don't play at least 6 games, but there's no language in the CBA that says you must sign a franchise tag in order for the tag to count.

So the Steelers don't have to let him go in 2019 if he doesn't show up in the next 2 days, but if they keep him, the franchise tag in 2019 will be his 3rd (he still gets credit for his 2nd tag in 2018) and he'll be paid like a Top 5 QB.

Put him in DET or CLEV, and they instantly become a playoff team.

Some thought the same about Murray, and look what happened. 1,845 yards in 2014 and he's now retired.

He sits out and his replacement (Conner) is currently 3rd in the league in rushing. You can tell Bell has skills, but it's very possible his success is due in large part to the Steelers' line/scheme/coaching....

After that TNF drubbing the Steelers gave the Panthers, do you think Bell still has the leverage in his holdout situation?

I've been seeing reports that he is supposed to report to the team this week. Do they insert him back into the line-up day one, or rotate him with Conner? The offense looks like it's firing on all cylinders, with or without the 'best' back in the NFL.

He has no leverage and never had any. He's the dumbest guy in the NFL.

They'll put a transition tag on him. Much cheaper

Bell took the gamble, went all in, that Conner was going to be 'MEH' this year and walked away from the table a loser. The only positive to come out of this for Bell is that he'll never have to play for that Crapsburgh franchise or play in front of that idiotic fan base ever again. Yes, if you can't tell, I despise Poopsburgh. :D

I am rolling with Connor.
He is beasting out in the league like I knew he would.
Thats why I was screaming to take him in the 3rd round.

They did? They seriously thought Murray was the type of RB to carry a team? Wow.

I always thought Bell was good, but a bit overrated. Like David Johnson in ARI. Dude has a lifetime average of 4.1 YPC and can't stay on the field, and they can't stop gushing about him.

Greasy

but savvy

He has cost himself a llllootttt of money this year.

Teams aren't going to be lining up to offer $30m guaranteed for a guy who just railroaded an entire franchise, including his teammates, and was less effective than his replacement. I have a lot of respect for players who are willing to hold out to get what they think they deserve, but he hasn't approached this the right way at all.

Acting like 14 mill is pocket change was what got me.

I may be wrong, but I just don't see anyone paying him as he thinks he should be paid.

Haven't seen anything to say he's showing up today.
Crazy

Left $14.5 million on the table. 99% of us will never make that much money in our lifetimes. And he could have made it in a few months playing a child's game. What a spoiled brat. Felt like he was disrespected?

I hope noone signs him next year and he is out of the league for good. Give him the Kaep treatment.

These spoiled prima donas are sickening.

He turned down a $70M, 5yr. ($14M per year) contract from Pittsburgh, and of course the $14.5M for a single season.

No future contract he signs will be lucrative enough to compensate for the lost $14.5M.
He has significantly reduced his career earnings.

If he signs a new 5 year contract, the annual salary would need to be about $3M per season higher, just to recoup the money he left on the table in 2018.
Anyone think he'll get a contract for $17M+ per year ???
I don't.

It's a triumph of emotion over reason.

What he did was nothing short of amazing this year, and will have long lasting repercussions in the NFL for years to come... hes changed the landscape as far as the franchise tag is concerned...The Steelers admitted if they were to tag him again, then the annual contract would be subject to the third tier tag rules. Even if he were slapped with the transition tag, its now 120% of the prior contract value, in this case, 14.5 million...

So basically he sits out a year and becomes a free agent. Because there is no way he is getting QB money... Any player facing a year 2 tag now knows that all they have to do is sit out a season, and they are a lock for free agency, and they don't have to play out the contract tender (and possibly get injured) to unlock the top tier of the franchise tag... which should be of particular note in Dallas, where they used the tag on Gregory iirc...

Lot of people have been bashing Bell for holding out... Yeah hes passed on a lot of money, but that's his right... hes the one putting it on the line wiwo... as for the lost money, who says its lost? Has he extended his career by a year or more? hes got less miles, taken a ton less hits... and you know Pitt would have run his wheels off this year knowing they weren't going to bring him back... anyone remember what happened to demarco murray? went from 219 carries to 392 in his last year in dallas, who knew they weren't going to resign him... so they ran the snot outta him, just like Pitt would have done...

smart play by Bell imo

It's true Bell has the right to sit out the season if he chooses. No dispute. Also true that he has one less year of wear and tear than he would have. But- he's also a year older, and his value is not going up with age. My guess is Pittsburgh will place the transition tag on him, but we'll see. The real question is- will his future contract be so lucrative that its incremental value will more than compensate for the lost $14.5M in today's dollars? I'll be surprised if that is the case.

Disagree. A player's shelf life is short, especially at RB and CB. Passing up 14 mill is stupid, IMO.

Yes, it is his right.
