Via the draft or FA, knowing we stay at the 4-3, who should they take or pick up?

And yes or no to Johnny Football?

hatcher leaves
ware takes significant pay cut
sign spencer to cheap 1 year incentive laden deal (his options will be quite limited)

sign one impact FA starter on DL (with money saved from ware)
draft 2 DL in first 3 rounds of the draft

crawford battles for starter role
other starters from thsi year will likely be back-ups

DL 'revamped'

Playing devils advocate a little bit but do we really even to want to resign spencer to anything after blowing that cash we threw at him? Not to mention we don't know if he is completely healed and if he would even be productive at DE

This!!

DE: Ware, Spencer, Crawford, Selvie, Rayford (Colts guy)
DT: FA, Tuitt (My choice), Bass, Hayden, 3rd RD DT (I'd go OL in the 2nd)

Yea... But recent history tells us that even when we know the status of a player's health we still make the wrong decision. This org is too optimistic :(

we are in the off season...so hope is the applicable term

not saying this is what we will do, just what we can realistically do and would be effective

Invest in the DLine this offseason. Cliff Avril last year was signed for 2 years 13M. John Abaraham for 2 years 4.6. Osi 2 years 8.5. Freeney 2 years 8.75. Jason Jones 3 years 9.5. Michael Bennett 1 year 5. You do a few of those deals and you've got something you can work with and not have giant cap numbers 3 years from now either.

I think Ware takes a cut down to 7-8 million. Austin, Parnell, Costa, and several of our street pickup DL are all cut. Restructures allow us to get under the cap to pick up one or two mid range FA and a few lower end guys. My moves:
FA:
Would live to get Everson Griffen DE Minn, but he may be too expensive Te'o-Nesheim is fallback
Vance Walker DT OAK
Major Wright S CHI - allows draft to focus on DL, instead of early round safety
Vincent Rey MLB CIN - Need a guy who can play MLB when Sean Lee goes down (Carter not the answer there, he is a WLB), also help out in Nickel packages.
Daniel Te'o-Nesheim DE TB - as above fall back veteran DE

Draft:
1st RD- Stephon Tuitt, DE, ND, or Ra'Shede Hageman, DT, Minnesota
2nd RD - Timmy Jernigan, DT, FL St, or Daquan Jones, DT, PENN ST, or Jackson Jeffcoat, DE, TX if they get DT earlier
3rd RD - Russel Bodine C/G UNC. Caould replace Bernadeau as a starter and give flexibility with Frederick so Boys no longer need to keep costa/cook. etc.
4th RD - Denicos Allen, OLB, Michigan State, Anthony Hitchens, OLB, Iowa or A.J. Tarpley, I/OLB, Stanford
5th RD - Cornelius Lucas, OT, Kansas State or Seantrel Henderson, OT, Miami
6th - 7th RDs, lost our 6th but we should have a few comp picks here as well as CHI: at this point its a crap shoot. They need to grab a developmental QB, RB, and a OL with the picks. QBS, like Bryn Renner or James Franklin. RB's that fall or are undervalued like; Roderick McDowell or John Hubert.

Yes to Johnny Football, but only if Tony can't play effectively after his surgery. What we really need in 2014 is a healthy Tony, as well as a good pass rush after free agency and the draft.. We're never going to contend for the Super Bowl without a pass rush, IMO.

What I would do is:

1. Sign Ray Horton or move Marinelli to D-Coordinator

2. Trade Claiborne for a #1 pick

3. Trade down (unless somebody ridiculously falls to us). Make a deal similar to the deal last year with the Niners, trade down to a later 1st rounder and pick up a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

4. Restructure Ware

5. Try to get Hatcher and Spencer at a reasonable price (I think Spencer may be easier than Hatcher)

6. Look for a FA that can contend to start at the WILL and can play the MIKE. That way he can compete with Carter and Holloman for the WILL and take over the MIKE if Lee gets injured. We can also look to move Carter or Holloman to the SAM.

7. Spend one of our 1st rounders on a safety that can play right away. Move Church to backup or perhaps Linebacker

8. Spend early pick on D-Lineman (probably strongside DE)

9. Figure out everything responsible for the hamstring pulls and fire anybody responsible for it.

10. Create a practice environment where those players that are hurt will have to perform rigorous calesthenics on the non-injured parts (creates an environment where the player would rather play thru being hurt than being on the sidelines and doing even more rigorous exercise).

We could then go into the season looking like this on defense:

DL

Ware
Hatcher
Hayden
#1 Pick at SDE
Selvie
Spencer
Bass
Crawford
Rookie Draft Pick

LB

Holloman
Carter
Lee
Wilber
FA player that can play WILL and MIKE
Church?

CB

Carr
Scandrick
Moore
Webb
Hamilton (or rookie)

S

Wilcox
Heath
1st or 2nd round pick
Free Agent

Ever think there are so many things wrong with the Franchise, that it does not matter how many holes you fill for the Team.

Sign 1 above average DL in FA
First two picks on DL

Play man 75% of time to take advantage of Mo and Carr's "skills"

Hope Wilcox or Johnson (yes I said it) emerges at safety.

Hope carter grows up and takes his job seriously.

Hope Lee stays healthy.

Ray Horton thumbs up.

Trading Claiborne for a 1 would be alright in my book nice idea I had not thought of that lately.

You are correct this draft has lots of CB talent, so the above trade seems good.
The DL talent is below average in the draft and for our needs maybe one/two are first rd selection talent. Not a great year to rebuild the DL so do you do it anyway?
Completely agree on Safety if one is available and talented enough.
Ray Horton is a good defensive/head coach type person IMO.

They didn't know with Ratliff and I think it's time they quit thinking these players are completely on board with Jerry these days. There is some bad Mojo around VR right now and he seems to be the witch doctor.

Have Jerry sell the team to either Jimmy Johnson (the former coach) or a business man that has no aspirations of coaching in the NFL EVER! Save that I really dont think we can get markedly better in any sustainable manner.

Man, as I read that, thats depressing as all get out. Sorry, wow.

Nobody would trade a first round pick for Claiborne
