What are you looking for in a backup QB?

If the Cowboys draft a qb, Grier will be the backup since they just signed him.
how can one be sure of that though, I mean i'm ready for the Rush experiment to be over, Lance can go sell tires at a tire store

I'd tap the breaks on Grier. His on his 5th team in two years, and most of that time has been on a practice squad where anyone could have signed him at any time. Hes only signed to a league minimum deal which tells me he is probably the emergency plan in case they miss out on a QB in the draft. Good chance Grier is a PS player again or cut during camp.

hopefully because a rookie beat him out, hell we could sign a cheap vet who knows

Will Grier is as good or better than Cooper Rush.

It wouldnt surprise me at all if we look to add another cheap QB. They may just need bodies to throw the football during mini camp if Dak isnt ready to practice that soon.

Based on what? He hasnt played in a game since 2019 (where he threw 4 INTs in 50 attempts) and has struggled to even stick with a team since. I'm not saying he cant do the job of a backup, but we have zero proof so it seems silly to just pencil him in at this point.

Good point, the mold of a QB that I want if I didn't already say it is someone that can use their legs when needed not just be a pocket passer

Go watch his last game with the Cowboys.

A preseason game? Really? He played so well they cut him right after....He played so well that another team didnt pick him up on the active roster and he sat on the practice squad for Cincy.

I say it every year....preseason stats do not matter. Getting sucked in to preseason stats just sets you up to be disappointed. Getting sucked into preseason stats from two years ago is just silly.

They may not, but they should be given the opportunity to, and not just because he's been around the team a few times
Maybe if they surprise us and take a qb in the 3rd round. I don't think they would do that. I don't think a 5th round qb would be the Cowboys backup.

1 round shy away from the mess we have at QB now, who knows!!!??? We're one injury away from him playing anyways (a backup) it's imperative we get a backup and realize that Dak has struggled with injuries

Nothing wrong with having Grier as the backup on this Cowboys team in my opinion and I would like to see it. Call me a sucker, I liked Tony Romo in his rookie training camp and always thought he should be playing when Parcells kept him buried on the bench.

No argument on Romo, but the Cowboys also saw enough to keep Romo around. Grier is bouncing around teams at a rate where he might be close to out of opportunities with every incoming QB class. Hes also about to turn 30 years old so he isnt really developing at this point either. Grier was clearly brought in more so because he is cheap than it is he is a good player. I would be shocked if he were the backup here for 2025.

Big arm
Mobility
Poise
Ability to pick up the offense
The Ability to put the ball where it needs to be
Leadership Capabilities etc

As it stands now we have 1 QB under contract on this team, I think we're overlooking the fact that our current starting QB is coming off an injured season, and he may not be the same going forward in terms of availability. With that said, I see fans on here saying that we need to fix the trenches, and all other aspects of this team, but having a QB that can step in and give us some wins NOT NAMED RUSH/Lance is going to be helpful to this team!

I'm not sure Rush would want to come back anyways seeing how they did him the last game, please give your thoughts
Someone not good enough to be a starter.
