Dominance in the trenches (both sides) and QB play. It truly is that simple.

Defensively - Low 3rd down conversion rate...that means you are getting off the field...the more chance you give your offense the more chances you have to score

offensively - Convert third downs, which means you are keeping drives alive.

Yep. When I review what went wrong in games (other than turnovers) I focus on 3rd down conversions and big plays.

For instance in the Pats game they just had 11 of what I call critical fails on defense which include 3rd/4th down conversions allowed and gains of over 12 yards. Just looking at those 11 plays shows you what really went wrong on defense.

It's similar on offense. If you have a big play offense then 3rd down conversions don't have to be as good but if you have a methodical type offense then 3rd/4th down plays are super critical.

I look at adjusted yards per run play.

AYR = (Rush Yards + 10000*Turnovers) / 10000

From 2008 to 2012:

When Team 1 AYR - Team 2 AYR = 0.5 (or higher), team 1 wins 80% of the time.

When Team 1 AYR - Team 2 AYR = 2.5 (or higher), team 1 wins 92% of the time.

Besides the obvious "score more points than the opponent".

Running the football and defending the pass?

Great punting game and passing the ball?

Defending the run and time of posession?

This could go a thousand different ways.

For me, it's passing the ball and winning the turnover battle.

I'd imagine you'd be hard pressed to find a game where Team A lost the game, even though they had a better passing game and won the turnover battle vs Team B. Speaking to this, look at our team and you can easily see why we've lost the past 5 games.

What aspects of the game correlate with winning, in your opinion?

Run the ball well and get after the QB. If you can run the ball well and impose your will on others in that fashion, you kill clock and demoralize a defense. On the other side, if you can disrupt the pocket regularly, lots and lots of really good things are going to happen behind you.

Having a game plan that fits the personnel on the field. Making effective in game adjustments if that plan doesn't work.

Mistake free football - (No penalties, stupid TOs or wrong assignements)

Play with high effort - (Give the effort, everybody. No plays off or half speed routes etc.)

I think we have enough talent to beat anybody anytime. We kill ourselves on most drives IMO. Stupid plays, poor execution, drive killing penalties etc. The other teams pay their players to and there is talent on the other teams. We are not going to win every play, complete every drive for scores, hold every offense scoreless. That's OK. We just need to not hurt ourselves and the rest will take care of itself. We eliminate that and we could have won all of the games we lost. JMO

Give me a great Defense and a Offensive line and I'll make it work somehow.

With our current qb situation...

Run the ball effectively, including a long td or two

And

Create turnovers
