What can we expect from Gregory?

I wanted to look at past rookie defensive end production over the last few years, but it was difficult to get a great grasp on this.

In 2014 Clowney was hurt early, so that comparison was lost.

Demarcus Lawrence was actually probably the closest example you can find to what our expectations would be for Gregory this year, but Lawrence also missed 9 games last year.

What's interesting is that in 7 games, they played Lawrence in 217 snaps. 31 snaps per game. This would expropriate to 496 snaps in a season. You still have to ask however, if he wasn't injured would he only have gotten half time, because they eased him in. Lawrence had 38 snaps in week 17. Mincey had 35.

I think we need to start out with the idea that we'll take 4 defensive ends to the game on game day. With Hardy suspended my guess would be

Mincey
Lawrence
Gregory
Russell

Mincey and Gregory on the right and Lawrence and Russell on the left.

I think that Gregory is going to be used a lot, especially if they want to slide Mincey inside from time to time.

I think by the end of the season, we'll see (assuming he stays healthy) him average about 35 snaps per game. Which is good for 560.

I think that is a really good number that could set him up for success.

On a separate note, I think it'll be interesting to see how the defensive end (and really the defensive tackle position) battles it out in camp.

Maybe a good comparison is looking what Demarcus Ware did when he first got here. But then that was a 3-4 D vs a 4-3 D.
And more of an every down player eventually over a rotation based Defense.
so maybe not a good comparison.

I expect much more out of Gregory vs what I expected out of Lawrence last year. Gregory is much more of a freak athlete. I expect some real disruption when he is out there on the field...

I don't think that is an apt comparison given the position difference and play time difference.

There were plays in college where Gregory was actually tripped teamed. I think one thing that will give him a great opportunity here is that most of the attention is going to go to Hardy when he eventually plays. I think that will give a lot of people the ability to shine here. I feel as though a lot of people have forgotten all about Lawrence from last year, primarily because he wasn't a first round draft pick and consequently because of his injury, but he was one of the earliest 4-3 defensive ends drafted. Moving back to the 4-3 has been extremely fruitful for us in terms of getting players that fit here, instead of the 3-4.

Being stacked on offense has given us the ability to really focus on our defense without concerns of offensive degradation (some will disagree as it relates to running back). And now we don't need to look for 3-4 defensive ends, tackles, or outside linebackers. This really lets us let the draft come to us.

I don't know what we'll do with Hardy, Mincey, and McClain next year, but hopefully that resolve itself as well.

If active, Hardy will play about 80%. The remaining snaps will be Mincey, Gregory and Lawrence. The total snaps are normally less than 70. I don't see Gregory playing more snaps than Mincey or Lawrence.

Russell could be inactive when Hardy is active unless some of the DEs play a lot of snaps at DT.

I'm more interested to see which players make the roster at this point.

Probably 10 or 11 DL. Hardy being out could give them extra time to decide on the final spot.

Hardy
Lawrence
Mincey
Gregory
Crawford

Hayden
Bishop

Russell
Gardner
Whaley
Jack Crawford

Coleman

I predict the consensus on the man out will be Hayden....

I'm the eternal optimist and I have him at 10 sacks this year and in the final voting for defensive rookie of the year

I'm hoping for an Aldon Smith like rookie season and 14 sacks!

I would guess that Smith's rookie season was one of the best ever for a defensive player. I figure Gregory will show flashes of his ability and it will tease us for what to expect in the years to come. I don't think he will be a force on this defense this year that will be much of an upgrade. In a couple years, he should be really good.

Agreed on your take on Gregory.

He'll be an immediate pass rushing upgrade over Selvie and Spencer, but we're not talking "Aldon Smith" numbers here. Probably more like 6 sacks in 500 snaps.

Funny thing on Smith is that his best season as far as the number of sacks per snap was his rookie season. His ratio has gotten progressively worse year after year.

he will make an immediate impact on passing and 3rd downs.

the guy plays fast, can get to the passer and is aggressive.

ease him in, like the 9ers did with Aldon and tell him to pin his ears back.

i dont worry about his weight, he was 248 at the game changers tv production and i think can play this year at 250

Great point
Don't think we can expect huge numbers out of him since most of his playing time will be early in the season
When hardy is ready he has to be on the field
If he gets 5 or 6 sacks I think that's great
The real key for Gregory is to see if he can be the man the next season or do we have to sign hardy again
Gregory plays bigger than his size and he is never gonna be a 270 lb player
But if we can get h to 245 next season there is a chance we have a starter in him for the future

So has his off the field issues. Gregory does remind me, the player I mean, a lot of Aldon. Yes, he needs to gain weight, but I love his length.
