Huge numbers or not this guy was supposed to be a top 10 pick and possible the best DE in the draft

If he keeps his head on straight he can have a significant impact this season

That is all I am looking for from him

I think I remember seeing mocks early on where he was actually the first or second pick in the draft, based on talent.

I can't wait to see him getting a ton of snaps in preseason, and then while Hardy's serving his suspension. I imagine when Hardy's back he's going to be purely a "passing down/distance" situational player. But it's going to be a lot of fun seeing him develop.

If I had to guess, I'd say over/under 6 sacks his rookie season, which is extremely impressive for a rookie.

Agreed
I'm more interested in him being a disruptor which he absolutely has the talent to be

He's carrying the same weight as Detroits' megatron. He's lighter than virtually any tight end you can name. And I'm guessing with his metabolism it won't be easy to add weight.

That reality...and his rookie level of experience will limit him to a role as a pass-rushing specialist. I predict 6 sacks and maybe a dozen pressures.

I do suspect if he keeps his head on straight that he can be a Charles-Haley type disruptor in time.

I'm the eternal optimist and I have him at 10 sacks this year and in the final voting for defensive rookie of the year

I agree Jstopper. Before I scrolled down and seen your post, I was thinking around 10 sacks barring any setbacks. The Boys have added several "rushman" to the DL and solidified the LBer core.. this will resonate through out the defense causing more opportunities for guys to "eat-up" quarterbacks. This actually causes me to question if 10 is too high for the rookie bc the sacks will be shared with the likes of Crawford, Hardy, Mincey, Lawrence, and yes, Whaley too. I'll stick with 10 bc I can see Marinelli using Gregory as a pass rush specialist as not to wear him down through his first NFL season. By the end of the year he could be up to 255lbs, Hardy will be playing to relieve pressure, and Gregory will start having multiple sack games. Maybe I'm drinking the Kool-Aid, but I envision Lawrence, Hardy, Gregory, and Crawford terrorizing opponents by years end.. And we're going to be riding this defense like we rode Murray well into the playoffs.

Maybe a good comparison is looking what Demarcus Ware did when he first got here. But then that was a 3-4 D vs a 4-3 D.
And more of an every down player eventually over a rotation based Defense.
so maybe not a good comparison.

No, that's a great comparison minus the different schemes. Ware was a high draft pick. If not for the question marks surrounding his questionable behavior, Gregory could have easily gone as high as 5 or 6 in the draft.

I expect, as he gets acclimated to his teammates and the speed of the NFL, for him to have a pretty dang good rookie campaign.

I think some of us are expecting too much out of him his rookie year. I would be very happy with a 4 sack season his rookie year. Give him a year or 2 to become a beast.

What can we expect from Randy Gregory?

We can expect him to learn the defense, play hard when given reps during a game, and stay out of trouble off the field. That is all we can expect.

Hopefully he doesn't get injured first. Rookies seem to get injured, maybe the speed or power of the NFL game, but if he's healthy, I say 10.

I think this is much closer to what he will do as a rookie. He may not get four sacks, but he could put pressure on the QB.

20 + sacks or he is a bust!!!;) Seriously, I would be happy with 5 - 10 sacks and consistent QB pressure. I am excited to see what he can do.

Gregory was going to be a top 3 pick I think he will have the most sacks by rookie Dends, I'm thinking 6+ sacks but when we have Hardy back and him getting doubled team our young guns should get very good looks 1o1. I'd compare with Irvin from Seattle and how he was used on 3rd down.

452 snaps and recorded 8 sacks, 12 QB Hits and 20 QB pressures. That's what Bruce Irvin had.

I wanted to look at past rookie defensive end production over the last few years, but it was difficult to get a great grasp on this.

In 2014 Clowney was hurt early, so that comparison was lost.

Demarcus Lawrence was actually probably the closest example you can find to what our expectations would be for Gregory this year, but Lawrence also missed 9 games last year.

What's interesting is that in 7 games, they played Lawrence in 217 snaps. 31 snaps per game. This would expropriate to 496 snaps in a season. You still have to ask however, if he wasn't injured would he only have gotten half time, because they eased him in. Lawrence had 38 snaps in week 17. Mincey had 35.

I think we need to start out with the idea that we'll take 4 defensive ends to the game on game day. With Hardy suspended my guess would be

Mincey
Lawrence
Gregory
Russell

Mincey and Gregory on the right and Lawrence and Russell on the left.

I think that Gregory is going to be used a lot, especially if they want to slide Mincey inside from time to time.

I think by the end of the season, we'll see (assuming he stays healthy) him average about 35 snaps per game. Which is good for 560.

I think that is a really good number that could set him up for success.

On a separate note, I think it'll be interesting to see how the defensive end (and really the defensive tackle position) battles it out in camp.

For pure production its very possible he can lead the team sacks and hit double digets. A similar player/talent in Aldon Smith got 14 as a pass rush specialist as a rookie ( he wasnt a starter) and a lesser player/talent in Bruce Irvin got 8 as a rookie in the same
