What can we get for Ellis?

There's a lot of talk re Glover, Ellis, Dat & Singleton. I think Dat will retire if neck continues to be problem & Singleton will only come back (if he fully recovers) for his vet leadership and if we don't signdraft a quality OLB to replace him.

Glover & Ellis are more interesting because both are good players in the 4-3 defense but really don't have the size to play in 3-4. Since we going with 3-4, Glover probably goes to save $6M against the cap but can we get anything for him (draft pick or a vet player)?

We can still afford keep Ellis (turns 31) but, unless we can convince him to stay, sounds like he wants play elsewhere. Since we can afford keep him/or trade him, comes down to what we can get for him. A 3rd round pick would be great but another scenario is to trade him to a team with either good stable of WRs or player at another position we need upgraded. Rams come to mind, but Denver sure could use him, etc.

This offseason will be every bit as busy as last year & we don't have to wait until FA season begins in March. Parcells is deciding which OL coaches to keep/reassign/add should Payton leave. Cowboys already decided to keep PS players, extended contracts of Witten & James (or was it Roy Williams) & will extend offers to 3-4 other players like Campbel, Fujita, etc. But other major decision must be made almost immediately re 3-5 of our own vet players. So much needs to be done before March cause by then we need to know and have arranged which FAs to bring in, attend combines, etc., and then in April is last chance to interview young draftees of interest to us. While the Ranch may seem to be very quiet but it is a beehive in Jerry/Stephan Jones offices along with Ireland & Parcells. Sure would be nice if media could get tidbits on what is going on but Parcells probably has door bolted but do think we will see more news from there after SB is over.

I'll take a 4th rounder

Als and Dat not coming back

Glover - depends on restructure. It might be in all parties best interest to move on? Draft may play huge part in Glovers role.

I think Ellis might be traded for another DL. The Rams are unhappy with their DL(Kennedy and Lewis? and Pickett?) If Glover agrees to a restructure, he has trade value. Either another defensive lineman or LB would be ideal or a mid round pick.

I'd like to get 2 or 3 for one or the other or both. You never know what a team is willing to give for a piece they think could be the final piece they need.

How much would it be worth to have Glover on a team like the Bengals or the Colts? I can name a few more teams (but that would require work, and i'm too tired right now) But you get the point.

Let's say the Cowboys go to the NFC championship and lose because of no pressure up the middle on passing downs. Our kicker is outstanding, solid offense (24 points a game on average) great secondary, but we have one strong pass rusher, but nothing else to get push on the line putting pressure on QB's. Would a 2nd round pick on a proven Vet like Glover be too much to give up? I don't think so...

In other words, you never know.

All the talk from VR last year was how we were developing a D-line rotation similar to what we had in the 90s. I would not be surprised at all to see Ellis back next year. If we lose someone to injury next year and Ellis/Glover are gone we will be kicking ourselves.

A 2 or 3.

Ellis is a SOLID DE, high motor, never takes a play off, and high character. He would be a great addition to ANY team in the league.

I think Greg Ellis is a Marketable commodity for some clubs. For Example, a team like KC could really use a guy like Ellis IMO. They get almost no pass rush from anybody but Hicks. You have a great offense and some nice young players on defense. You match Hicks with a high quality guy like Ellis, capable of posting 10 sacks for you on the other side and all of a sudden, you start having something. Ellis, to me, would be a Herm Edwards kinda guy so a trade with a team like that could make a great deal of sense. I could see a 2nd coming from a team like that for Ellis, what he could do for them and a very reasonable contract. That, to me, would be an excellent pick up for KC. Excellent situation for Ellis and an excellent option for us. Wouldn't have to worry about seeing him in the division either. Wouldn't mind throwing in Glover for a pick either. That's the kind of trade that I would be very happy with.

I doubt anyone trades for Glover. They'd be foolish to since they'd have to pay his bonus and take on his contract knowing we're very likely going to cut him anyway to save like 6m on the cap. It's a pity because he's still a good player but he's done in Dallas IMO.

Ellis? I would hold out for a 3rd. Pass rushers are a prized commodity in the NFL and Ellis has a proven track record of getting decent/good sack production. My preference would be to keep Ellis but it sounds like he wants out.

Ellis isn't going anywhere. His contract is cheap for a guy that is a decent run defender and still chipped in 8 sacks. He's a better pass rusher than Canty or Spears.

Forget trading him... it won't happen.

He can want out all he wants but his contract runs for another 3 years.

Everyone is ready to ship these guys out the door, but consider a couple of things:

1. The DL rotation like mentioned earlier in this thread. Your top reserve becomes "Strong Dog", a 7th rounder who ended the year on IR and an undrafted free agent who wasn't active until the tail end of the season.

2. Injuries. See above. I know the 3-4 is the "superior" scheme because you can plug guys in easier. Do you want to play a full season with Coleman at a DE position?

3. Who replaces them in the nickel? OK, with Glover, you could say Ratliff, Spear or Canty, but who replaces Ellis opposite Ware? Canty/Spears don't exactly strike me as edge rushers. Maybe its a replacement in the draft or FA, but this team has quite a few holes to fill as it is.

Could we trade him to the Rams for Dexter Coakley....I would just find that so ironic. :D

Right now you have Coleman, Canty and Spears. I don't believe it would be a hard gap to fill to bring in another solid 34 DE. Not starter but solid. I personally think we owe it to Ellis to allow him to go out and do his thing somewhere else. If he's unhappy, he will eventually let it spill over into his game and honestly, I could not blame him. It makes sense to make the move from a cap perspective. I think we save money coming and going there. He has earned it as a good guy for the franchise through play and conduct. If we prevent him from doing this, that kind of thing does get around. Players watch and listen. It could effect decisions on FA. If a player is prevented from moving on, that all goes down into consideration. I think we do ourselves more harm then good by preventing this thing.

As for Glover, well, I just think that we need to bring in a quality NT. Somebody who can start by the 2007 season. Glover doesn't fit. He costs A LOT. We're not deep to begin with at the position. If we're going to get serious about our defense and this crap 34 stuff, we have to get a NT that can be dominating at the point of attack. If not, we will never beat NY or anybody else who has a good running game. IMO, we simply have no option at this position. We have to get a guy.

Good thought on KC cuz we have a lot of front office and scouting contacts there...

Having said that, Hicks is the one who gets no pass rush and the guy on the other side lights it up. Hicks is sure to get you 5 sacks a year, while Jared Allen (5th round 2004) has 20 in 2 years.
