Assume Phil Simms ends up not making the HOF.
That would be the more legit question. Would you rather have his career or Marino's; a very solid, hard working player who had a long prosperous career and also won 2 SB trophies vs one of the all-time best QBs, who also worked hard, had a long and even more prosperous career, but had no trophies?
That might be a tougher call.
Simms and Marino both had long careers. Simms was mostly a very good bus driver who had some very efficient playoff runs. Marino was far better--carried his tream, turned it over less and threw for way more TDs and yards-- but the gap was not like him vs Dilfer. Simms got two rings.
So fairly tough call. I'm not sure about career earnings, but it owuld come into play.
The Dilfer vs Marino comp is just too extreme, imo.
Though Dilfer was in the league a long time, he only started 16 games 4 times. He was his team's main starter for only 6 seasons scattered over 13 years.
