A- Marino type career, HOF, all time great stats, records and ZERO Super Bowls

or

B- Decent Career similar to Trent Dilfer, no HOF, no great stats, 12 year starter, couple pro bowls, no records, but win 2 Super Bowls as starting QB

I would love A but would go with B, any thoughts :laugh1:

This has more to do with the overall team than the QB. I would gladly take a guy like Marino with the Ravens 2000 SB team.

It kind of goes back to the point I have tried to make over and over. Teams win SB not QB. Troy was great but he had great players around him like an outstanding OL, a HOF WR and HOF and all time leading rusher on the field with him.

If you are asking me what I'd want my career to be if a QB.........SB

If you are asking me what career type QB I'd want for Cowboys..........SB

If you never win a SB, there is always an empty hole, and I certainly don't want the Cowboys to find another Marino who never wins...that's sort of what we have now.

It shows a QB can only control so much. Marino as a QB is 10 fold that of Dilfer but QB do not win SB's, teams do that is why guys with less talent can end up with a ring.

There is not a coach out there who would not want a QB with the talent level of a Dan Marino but if you don't have the talent on the team both offense and defense then who your QB is means nothing.

Really speaks to the type of person you are.

A is for someone that looks at the entirety of his career and is proud of that.

B is for someone that likes the bling. Rings are bling.

Now as a 3rd party fan to the team give me B since sadly I WANT THE RINGS.

The rings are the only things that stand for something that they can't take away from you.

Championships.

All those records Marino set? They're broken or being broken. Over time your records, and individual accomplishments, don't mean jack. People will forget those the moment someone comes along and breaks them. Then you're just that guy who used to be thought of as the best at what he did till Player X came along and destroyed that.

Championships they can't take away from you. They can't just pretend you didn't win the big games.

I'll always take Troy Aikmans approach on this. He was super talented, knew he could have set the world on fire throwing the ball, and would have loved to have slung the ball all over the field. But he understood that riding Emmitt was what gave them the best chances to win, and many times said he'd have gladly handed the ball off to Emmitt 50 times a game and never thrown a single pass if it meant they won and they'd win Champinships.

Cause, again, in the end that's all that matters. The championships.

I think he's just saying those numbers as an example, not for exactly what Dilfer did.

Basically he wants to know if you'd rather be a QB like Dilfer and win a couple rings or be an all time great like Marino but win nothing.

I'd take B every single time and smile. I wouldn't give a crap about what fans or message board folks thought about me being an average QB, or getting a ring or two cause of my defense, or whatever.

The fact of the matter would simply be that I'd have the rings and that's all that would matter to me.
It's hard to top this, I totally agree. I take winning over anything.

And teams need their QB to be great to win. Works both ways.

The original post said 2 SB rings; there's not a coach in the NFL who wouldn't trade a QB with Marino's career for a ring. Most QBs would prefer two rings as starter over a Marino career, I would think, but I know any coach would. This entire post presumes that you know your QB will have a Marino career but no SB or you can have an avg QB with two championships; no coach or gm would take that over winning a SB with any QB.

Being a champion is why you play the game.

They can't take a Hall of Fame bust away from you - which I'd much rather have than a ring. You know how many guys get a Super Bowl ring each year? 53.

You know how many go in the Hall of Fame? 5. Maybe.

The Super Bowl means that you were the best, or among the best, for a season. A HOF induction means you were among the best of all time.

To each their own.

Hall of Fame is an individual achievement and pales in comparison to the ultimate goal of winning a championship, IMO.

The rings mean far more to me than that. I'm sure guys like Moose would tell you every day that they wouldn't trade their rings, and that experience of winning a championship, to be in the Hall of Fame.

In a perfect world and situation you'd make it into both, like Aikman, Irvin, or Emmitt.

Most of the time sports aren't a perfect world and if I had to choose it's always going to be the ring over any individual accolades.

I bet anything that Aikman would trade that Hall of Fame bust for another ring or two if he was given the option. I'm pretty dang certain of it in fact.

I would take B because when you are famous, EVERYONE is looking @ you.

With B, no one cares what you did or you are doing, and you still have money to live a comfortable lifestyle (if invested wisely). It is nice to go somewhere, and people not know who you are sometimes.

I would take a team full of JAGS if that would ensure a SB over HOF players but that is not reality. Dilfer was not a good QB Marino is one of the all time greats it is a fricken no brainer who any coach would go after. Winning the SB is not about the QB it is a bout the team.

Balt did not win because Dilfer played great they won because they had the better team. Sorry but these stupid post acting as if oh it is all the QB are a complete joke.

You go that right.

Oh, and btw, comments saying these guys play mainly to get a trophey are far, far removed from reality. They play to earn a living and live a dream first and foremost. But once you are living that dream, IF you're a big team player, then it does become about the championships.

The winners want to play the game at the highest level possible most of all...that is how all successful people in all fields acheive greatness. If you have enough of those guys on one team, like the Cowboys in the 70s-early 90s, you often get championships as a result.
