What Do You Do If We Sign A Starting Caliber LT?

With the timing the FO has chosen, an interesting choice has to be made when constructing the staring lineup as the season progresses.

IF, and only if, we sign a staring caliber T like Jason Peters; where does that leave the LG spot?

We are probably too close to the season for him to jump right into the starting lineup. So what do you do, play Tyler Smith at LT for 2 games then back to LG? Then does Smith replace McGovern if CM is playing well? Do we sit Smith/keep him as a swing if Peters and CM are playing up to standard?

What do y’all think?
I would start Peters at LT game one and Tyler at LG.
This is not Peters first rodeo.
He can handle it.

For anyone like Peters or Fisher or some one who can start, they are not getting here before the 1st game. ( Guarantees contract)

so TB game would be LT Tyler Smith unless his ankle is so bad he cant play at all. We would slide a TE ( heck may be another lineman ) to support him and protect Dak’s Blindside which will rob one offensive player so very conservative game plan. Hope D comes to play and create some short fields.

Yeah I think Peters is a safety net/mentor. If he’s signed I don’t believe it means he’s automatically the starting LT

Is it worth it though? What if Dak gets injured in the first game because of a rookie or worse playing at LT? It's a risk for sure but for total CHUMP change and a guaranteed raggedy small contract? Especially to Jerruh... doesn't make sense that they'd risk it all for one game but it might be too late to debate anyways.

Yeah because Smith was so amazing at raggedy Tulsa as their LT....makes perfect sense.

This is the same front office that did not sign a swing tackle all off season.
So I don't know what they are capable of?

This is crazy talk. Smith hasn't played LT all summer. Dak is toast without the Cowboys bringing in help. FO can't be that stupid!

I never liked the pick…but it happened and for better or worse his time has come to play LT. Let the kid sink or swim and lose the position before never giving him a chance. He has all the size and strength of a LT. He has bad technique, but he’s not going to be overwhelmed by nfl athletes. Don’t understand why people are acting like he’s going to get blown by and get Dak hurt…a bunch of holding penalties is the likely the worst case scenario.

Tyler Smith playing bad at LT for 2 games isn’t going to be the reason this team doesn’t win a super bowl. The positive potential of possibly having the next franchise LT far outweighs the negative risks.

I'd rather not risk the season and our Franchise QB (whether you believe it or not) to see what happens at LT when there are clearly more experienced/better options available. I am all for Tyler getting his feet wet but LT is a really heavy lift for pretty much ANY rookie lineman. Could ruin him pushing him out there.

Your hypothetical post assumes a lot of things. Some of these things I don't think you even think you are assuming. They are just foregone conclusions in your head. What if Tyler Smith plays so well at LT the first two games that we don't need Jason Peters? I think you have never even considered that possibility because you have so little faith in our 1st rd draft pick.

Smith was battling McGovern and McCarthy said if the season started today (this was a week ago) then McGovern would be the starter.

So I’m just going by what the head coach said. Seems like McGovern would be getting first go at LG. If he’s playing well alongside Peters, you take him out anyway?
Maybe for a game or two. It's smith position and his job. Most depends on how McGovern is playing. Since we are playing TB amd Cin to start the season I might go with the vet for those 2.

Not so fast. He doesn’t know our system and who knows what shape is in right off the bat. It’s a wait and see circumstance. I just don’t see bringing a 40 year old off the street and having him start a week or so after he gets here regardless how good he has been in the past.

It seems most of this board thinks this is fantasy football.

Knowing the plays, or anything like that is irrelevent. You just put a guy in, and he just plays like he always has.

Offensive lines are a unit, they work together as one. Not just 5 individual guys doing there own thing.

Your a week from the beginning of the season. They’re aren’t any starting caliber OTs out there. Peters isn’t starting caliber at this point… 6 sacks and 30 some odd pressures last season put him somewhere below mediocre! He’s a designation on permanent IR waiting to happen!

If that’s the scenario you foresee then that’s totally fine my man. Any hypothetical opinion is welcome.

I have faith that Smith is our LT of the future. Just think it’s possible that a guy who’s had 0 LT snaps in the preseason could come in week 1 against Shaquille Barrett and be overwhelmed.

Not everything is an extreme polar reaction man. Just because I hypothesized Peters starting doesn’t mean I have no faith in Smith. I don’t think in extremes like “he’ll be amazing” or “he’ll be bad”, the reality usually lies somewhere in between. I have total faith in his future, just think his present may be better served at LG.

Not sure where you’re getting your below mediocre thing from. He was a good starter last year and the best Chicago has had since 2017. He played 15 games. On ability, he’s definitely a starter. But yes there is a chance he gets hurt, no questions about his ability though.

While I agree that 6 sacks and 28 pressures is not below mediocre. A 77.5 grad puts him just about Connor Williams level, which this board has no use for.
