The real question is how much of the personnel is in some way McCarthy's fault?Things haven’t gone as I’d hoped in the winning seasons/playoffs. But McCarthy may have shown more of what I’m looking for in HC during this down year.
Stoicism reminiscent of my beloved coach Landry scored enough points with me that I think they should extend him for three years and see if he and Zim can move this thing back into contention - true contention.
The Cowboys won a bunch of games for three years under MM - but I never felt like they had a REALLY good team. Just a rung below the true contenders. I’m willing to take a few more rolls with McCarthy.
This is a great question at the heart of the conundrum in Dallas. How much real control does the HC have in Big D? And maybe more importantly, does anyone in the front office truly know what kind of team they are trying to be? Or is this team just a collection of “stars” JJ and SJ love to market? The real question is how much of the personnel is in some way McCarthy's fault?
To be clear, that is a serious question I really wish we knew the answer to beyond people's biased opinions based on how much they like/hate McCarthy and/or like/hate Jerry.
It's easy to assume Jerry's to blame for everything because McCarthy is not a talker and too many times people mistake lack of clarity or denials as confirmations to viewpoints, when the truth is no one outside of McCarthy really knows how much input and sway he has with personnel.
If the Cowboys make an offer and McCarthy leaves, then the idea of McCarthy's personnel input being limited will become more validated, though it would take him publicly stating it afterwards to still confirm it.
If the Cowboys bring him back then that would suggest McCarthy has at least a level of personnel input that he is content with having, so while not confirmed it would at least prove he has some say in that area.
That brings me back to your point .. if they didn't/don't have a really good team, how much of that is McCarthy's fault?
The answer will likely come out over the next couple of weeks as the season ends and McCarthy's tenure concludes or continues.
This may set up to be another search for a former head coach who has been “studying every play in the NFL” in his barn, who is then invited over to the Jones castle for a pajama party that ends in a press conference. If the Cowboys make an offer and McCarthy leaves, we won't be told there was an offer at all.
If McCarthy has any itch to actually head coach and has enough self-respect to care about his legacy, he'll walk away and hope another team is interested. He's not going to get it done with Jerry in control...but he should have been fired after the GB playoff game. Getting the players ready to play and fired up to play was one of his only jobs and he failed spectacularly at it.
This is playing out like Garrett though. Silence and letting the contract expire and not bringing him back. My guess is Jerry felt him out and asked him if he wanted to return and he quietly said no.
He said he had more input into the draft (at GB he had virtually zero). He didn't mention free agency.McCarthy was recently quoted as saying he’s had MORE personnel input in Dallas than during anytime in his NFL coaching career. I have no reason to doubt him. However, there is NO COACH who has, will or could make unilateral personnel decisions for the Dallas Cowboys.
I doubt ANY NFL team invests such authority in the HC.
I think Jerry was waiting to see how MC and the team responded to how the season was unfolding. How the players responded to Mike and how they battled for their head coach. I mean if the players rolled over and Mike just went through the motions then we could be seeing the end of MC. But, the team has shown some fight and gumption, fighting through injuries and adversity. Maybe this is the kind of season this team needed to get them to turn the corner. It's easy to say let's start over and get some new blood in here to start a new course. But what kind of statement could be made about retaining what we have and picking ourselves up from face planting and correcting our course.Personally, I am waiting to see if Jerry Jones proves me wrong--which is entirely possible. He could have pulled the trigger and re-signed Mike McCarthy at any time. Hasn't done it. He could have hinted he would do so with McCarthy privately. I highly doubt he has. Jones' end-of-employment record for head coaches:
I repeatedly stated the odds of Jones firing McCarthy in-season were extremely low. Also, that he would be Garrett-ed since there is not any strong, old college ties between them. And he ain't retiring or resigning. So, tick tock.
- Jimmy Johnson: mutually parted ways (polite description)
- Barry Switzer: stepped down (polite description for re-signing)
- Chan Gailey: fired (no love lost for the former Florida Gator)
- Dave Campo: pantsed I mean fired (take that Central Connecticut State alum!)
- Bill Parcells: retired (gleefully..?)
- Wade Phillips: fired (a.k.a. put out of his misery)
- Jason Garrett: limbo-ed (
