I voted offer accepted. But in the discussion thread, I find the argument that JJ could have made an offer before, pretty compelling. At this point, I doubt they are arguing about dollars. This is JJ letting the contract finish and moving on.

This is a great question at the heart of the conundrum in Dallas. How much real control does the HC have in Big D? And maybe more importantly, does anyone in the front office truly know what kind of team they are trying to be? Or is this team just a collection of “stars” JJ and SJ love to market?

Its a collection of stars. They have no actual vision. We have no identity, nothing to lean on when things get tough.

Things haven’t gone as I’d hoped in the winning seasons/playoffs. But McCarthy may have shown more of what I’m looking for in HC during this down year.

Stoicism reminiscent of my beloved coach Landry scored enough points with me that I think they should extend him for three years and see if he and Zim can move this thing back into contention - true contention.

The Cowboys won a bunch of games for three years under MM - but I never felt like they had a REALLY good team. Just a rung below the true contenders. I’m willing to take a few more rolls with McCarthy.
Are you looking for continued failure, time management issues, etc.. then he is your coach. Not mine. If he is back, I guarantee he won't last the whole season next year.

Jerry will wait it out, much like free agency. When the most sought after head coaches are gone, he will spring into action for the scraps. Mike may very well be the best among those scraps left. I think he comes back. If so, want a new, creative OC who calls plays and in charge of the offense. Let Mike just walk around……..
People might get the wrong idea about ‘walk around’… Jimmy Johnson had offensive AND defensive coordinators. Mike has taken his turn at play-calling and the offense is too predictable, IMO. Go outside for the next OC.

Well my take is different, The Poll is incomplete,

I think if Mike McCarthy stays there has to be conditions,

he can't be the offensive coordinator, the only way they're going to appease this fan base and trust me Jerry knows the change is needed most wanted him gone after the Green Bay game and they kept him that didn't go too well and you can't do it two years in a row without some kind of big change...

so somehow you want to keep McCarthy you agree to have him stay it has to be with a new offensive staff he could be the head coach all he wants, I don't mind but we need a new offensive philosophy and coach is calling it, game plans ,and I don't mind then you have to bring in the other condition you might as well keep Mike Zimmer ,maybe that's the deal being made maybe Mike likes Zimmer they stay as a pair and they just change the offensive staff..

In the end I could live with that but I really think they need to part ways and just do a complete purge,

I don't want to hear about how every year is the same and nothing will ever change at least some things will change and you never know when one of these and it may be by complete accident you get the right staff here and it just clicks and things just go on a run you get lucky lower the injuries etcetera etcetera....

The problem with getting rid of McCarthy is that Jerry will just install another "yes man" and things will remain the same. The Cowboys need a YOUNG and upcoming HC, not an old retread. I don't know why Jerry is so scared to hire one. If you can't see the error of your ways after 30 years of failure, you are lost. I don't care about 12-5 seasons or division championships. That's not the goal. Hire a upcoming, young, innovative coach and get the hell out of his way.

The real question is how much of the personnel is in some way McCarthy's fault?

To be clear, that is a serious question I really wish we knew the answer to beyond people's biased opinions based on how much they like/hate McCarthy and/or like/hate Jerry.

It's easy to assume Jerry's to blame for everything because McCarthy is not a talker and too many times people mistake lack of clarity or denials as confirmations to viewpoints, when the truth is no one outside of McCarthy really knows how much input and sway he has with personnel.

If the Cowboys make an offer and McCarthy leaves, then the idea of McCarthy's personnel input being limited will become more validated, though it would take him publicly stating it afterwards to still confirm it.

If the Cowboys bring him back then that would suggest McCarthy has at least a level of personnel input that he is content with having, so while not confirmed it would at least prove he has some say in that area.

That brings me back to your point .. if they didn't/don't have a really good team, how much of that is McCarthy's fault?

The answer will likely come out over the next couple of weeks as the season ends and McCarthy's tenure concludes or continues.
it may boil down to which team will allow him to keep his staff.

Dallas could say we don't want your offensive staff (Brian Schottenheimer as OC, etc), they must be replaced, otherwise, feel free to seek employment elsewhere.

After looking at quotes by Big Mac and Zimmer this week, I’m starting to think he’s headed out. I sure would if I was in his shoes. At this point if Jerry wanted McCarthy he should have already offered. The fact he chose to wait would not sit well with all those coaches IMO.
How many coaches go to lame duck status? Not many. Jerry was typically arrogant. Mike did a good job with a bad hand. Things have gotten so bad it will be hard to get anyone good in here.

McCarthy was recently quoted as saying he’s had MORE personnel input in Dallas than during anytime in his NFL coaching career. I have no reason to doubt him. However, there is NO COACH who has, will or could make unilateral personnel decisions for the Dallas Cowboys.

I doubt ANY NFL team invests such authority in the HC.
Not since Parcels anyway.

I bet Andy Reid has a ton of say on draft day in KC. We know Belechek did in NE. Nobody wears the yellow and black unless Tomlin gives a thumbs up. When you have a great HC, the front office has to listen. We don't have that problem.

Jerry still thinks this roster is built to win and seems to be using injuries as a scapegoat even though they have got blown early in the year when they were fairly healthy.

Winning a few games with Rush at QB vs terrible teams shouldn't matter but have a feeling Jerry will use it to rationalize bringing McCarthy back.

They bring him back on a one year - prove it deal.

Refuse to upgrade the staff and roster and we rinse and repeat in 2026.

Mike "I'll be better" McCarthy returns. If Jerry wasn't upset by the humiliating loss to the Packers last year,, a wasted season that HE orchestrated should be no biggie. Fat Mike is comfortable, Jerry has the injury excuse and the fact that we "competed"....that checks all the boxes for an indifferent owner.

While there have been general coaching polls, I thought it would be interesting to see what fans think will happen specifically with McCarthy once the season ends.
I’ll tell you what I would love to happen. After the game on Sunday, Mike calls a press conference to announce that he’s not returning to the Cowboys. When they ask him when he was informed, Mike says ”I have not talked to Jerry. This is my decision and I want to explore other coaching opportunities. After this offseason, I realized that Jerry and my philosophies don’t align with how to build a championship team”.

He comes back. Jerry just itching for keeping things the same. Jerry likes the setup. Plus, if we struggle, he can always put the blame on Mike.
