What does Dak need to succeed?

2016 Dak had everything he needed to win. 2023 Dak does not. Unless he starts using his legs again and the team starts running an offense based around his strengths again I am not sure that I see it happening.

he had no chance as a rookie to win. no rookie QB has ever been to the superbowl or won it. there is a reason they need seasoning.

Like every quarterback he needs to stay ahead of the chains. With Zeke no longer putting us in 2nd. and 8 or 3rd. and 7 the offense should be more proficient. This defense should be rocking. What else would he need.

Not a Dak lover or hater but I think the team can win with him as QB. His best year was his rookie year and I think if the team emulated that with a much better defense they could be a real threat.

What that means:
- Good run game
- Lots of check down passes and emphasis on ball control
- More play under center with play action

Dak isn't going to out Mahomes Mahomes. There are a handful of QB's in the league that you don't want to get into a shootout against. The emphasis has to be on defense and ball control to avoid that.

Confidence.

No QB deals with the interception dissection he has and doesn't have some concern.

Brady retires and Rodgers gets traded and who do you think is the most discussed QB? Josh Allen melted down in the playoffs but he plays for BUF so they even make excuses for him.

Prescott's been through the media gauntlet before but never with so any fingers pointing at him as why the team failed this past season. And that would concern any human being.

And this is not new. In the 60's, they didn't blame the team or coaching, they blamed Meredith.

And Danny White caught his share of it as well. You'd think that Landry moment "No, Danny, No!" would have been at the end of every playoff game.

As
@calvinwatkins
said, Cowboys exercised the fifth-year option in 2024 for CeeDee Lamb, according to source. With two Pro Bowl selections, Lamb will make $17.99 million in '24 although the team would like to sign to extension this offseason.

Behind Prescott, CeeDee Lamb should be the front office's next priority. Fans actually think Lamb should be prioritized over QB1.

In a recent survey posed by The Athletic, Lamb received 50.3% of the vote in a poll about which player fans want to get signed first. For context, Lamb's share was over 30% greater than the next player (Trevon Diggs at 20.2%), while Prescott received 19.5% of the vote.

We've hardly heard a peep about Lamb's contract talks, but the ever-reliable Jane Slater of NFL Network provided an update this week.

We all know that Jerry Jones would love to have something newsworthy to talk about when he addresses the media at camp in Oxnard. Getting one of the faces of the franchise, a fan favorite and one of the 10 best WRs in the league signed to a big extension would be a perfect jumping off point for the Cowboys owner. It's anyone's guess if a deal will get done before camp, but all indicators are point toward Lamb signing a long-term contract with the Cowboys this offseason after the team exercised his fifth-year option earlier this offseason.

Dak needs a cleaner pocket. Every player in the NFL has a hole in their game. For Dak, he needs to be less harassed when he sets up to throw. There are two components to the offense which would give Dak the needed extra tic to make a decision and throw the ball. A competent running game, and a competent passing game.
Both of these areas are predicated on the offensive line creating running lanes, and protecting in the passing game. One might make the argument the point of launch for the pass plays a crucial aspect. Moving the pocket would aid in Dak's ability to throw unfettered.

Dallas chose a TE who now looks like he may be a red shirt over an offensive lineman. How many years in a row has the left guard been an after thought for this team?

This team will rely on Tyron Smith and Zach Martin. With Smith I believe you can already check the injury box. I still believe in Zach, but in the Tampa game last year he clearly missed a block which prevented a touchdown. When will his Hall-of-Fame skill set slip? Steele will be trying to make a comeback after a knee injury. So someone will be playing out of position.

The big lie is defenses win championships. They do when they have an offense to show up. If Dak is relied on to create with a porous offensive line that cannot open running lanes or protect because that squad was ignored this season, it will be more of the same.

Does this mean it is Dak's fault? If you are wanting a Mahomes create on the fly result, then I suppose you could blame Dak. I'm not suggesting he is faultless. But what I am saying is every player has warts and coaches coach around those weaknesses. Dak can throw for a lot of yards, but he needs a cleaner pocket. Does that make him a spare? No. It makes the brain trust responsible for creating a way to keep Dak out of trouble areas.

Until this team gives him the talent around him to play without constant disturbance, will anyone every really understand what Dak can do and cannot do.
A further touch with reality...the great wall of Dallas, *every last one was an unknown or a reject from another team.

Not a single one made it into the Hall of Fame.

Starting with that group, it no longer took 7 players to successfully block for a running play...as with Lombardi.

'91 it took some time for that group of linemen to grow to be the Great Wall.

The great wall was broken up by the car crash of Erik Williams, free agency of Gogan and Stepnoski...and Jimmy not handling the progressions after '93.

Larry Allen helped! But Nate Newton was convicted for drugs ...

This is to the Dak fans. I think 99.9% of the fanbase actively roots for the team over any player which means we are all rooting for Dak to figure it out.

Question is to the fans, what is he missing? Are there any traits or skills that you believe he has that he has not shown or given the chance to show? What gets him over the hump?
To learn that he has a responsibility, and he can't blame others when it's his fault.

It's a "team" game....giving wins to quarterbacks is beyond a ridiculous media head talking point. However it is the second most important thing behind good coaching.

But if you want to solely speak on talent the cowboys overall compared to most teams are on the loaded side. Majority of quarterbacks would dream and probably never see the amount of talent MM and Dak has in front of them.

Hopefully last year was an outlier cause he couldn't read defenses(good) the second half of the season
There is clearly QBs who can carry a team more than others.

Our QB is one that gets carried by others.

Maybe Dak is just easier to relate to than a winner like Aikman.

Some “fans” like the loveable loser types like Dak while alpha winners like Aikman can be intimidating to some.
You know why they die for Dak but we just can't say it here.
They have confused minds and the blender mixed it all up and the game of football is in a different reality in their heads.
God Bless them as when we actually get a franchise QB under center they won't even realize it and enjoy a passing game that will finally be feared by opposing defenses.........

Throughout his career, Dak Prescott has been one of the best quarterbacks in the league on third down. But through the 2022 season, a trend developed on third down. Prescott, one the of league’s most aggressive third-down throwers, would try to make a play down the field, often late in the play to his third or fourth read. Too many times last year his supporting cast didn’t live up to the task, and a total of seven of Prescott’s 15 interceptions came on third down.

But what if the Cowboys opened up the time machine, and encouraged Dak to use his legs more? In 2022, quarterback scrambles actually wound up being MORE valuable by EPA than pass attempts,

This seems counter-intuitive, but when you factor in that most quarterback scrambles take place in high leverage situations like third downs, two-minute drills, and in the red zone, it begins to make sense that these runs could be extremely valuable.

When we tie in the idea of so many of Dak’s interceptions in 2022 coming in these same situations, and late in downs when scrambling would likely be a sensible alternative, maybe asking Dak to tuck and run a time or two more per game rather than trying to fit the ball into a tight window to his third or fourth read might be beneficial.

Review some game film on Aikman around '79 with Flozell Adams at left tackle. Say, against Washington and with those receivers as well.

Snyder's first year as owner...

Getting in big holes

While we’ve had some close games in recent memory, some of them have required the Cowboys to pull themselves out of big deficits. Of the team’s eight playoff games over the last 10 years, half of them have consisted of games in which they have trailed by at least 13 points in the second half.

Digging a hole

We can remember the fight that each of these Cowboys squads had in these instances to work themselves back into the game, and against Detroit in 2014, they were able to come back and win, but it’s a tough task to continuously dig themselves out of these holes. Whether it’s being torched by Aaron Rodgers, an inability to stop the run, or slow starts by the offense (which we’ll get to next), the Cowboys have found themselves behind the eight ball too many times.

The offense is sluggish out of the gate

Do you know what can get you into big holes? Slow starts.
