Wade Phillips is the "Godfather" of the "Phillips 34". He is one of the best defensive coaches in the NFL. Jerry Jones knows the score. He isn't going to just toss Wade Phillips to the sharks like some would like him to do. Phillips' defense gave the offense plenty of opportunites to win games down the stretch and in October. The offense responded by finishing 2nd in turnovers and playing sloppy football, at critical times, during critical games. There were way too many 3 or 4 and outs this year, and the offense needs to be fixed.
Wade Phillips has confidence in Jason Garrett, and he must have a good relationship with him, or I think he would have stepped down. When Phillilps took over the defense and when Terence Newman came back, the defense went off and looked like a unit that could win a Super Bowl. When Phillips took over Read's duties, the special teams got better, except for the punter.
The guy knows how to coach. He won 13 games his first year, but that wasn't what everyone wanted. How dare the Cowboys do what the Colts and many other teams have done recently. This year the Cowboys' offense and special teams killed them. Phillips had a $ 3 million dollar offensive coordinator with one full year of experience and no Tony Sparano to help him see the big picture and help with protections. I mention the money, because with the money, comes great responsibility. After all, Jason Garrett was an assistant head coach and the "next head coach" in wating. Yet, it's Phillips' head that people want despite his side of the ball's success.
For many, Phillips has never been forgiven for the team losing the playoff game, and many never wanted him in the first place. He is portrayed as some "country idiot". I have never in my life seen a head coach, with two years in one place, treated with so much venom. Many want to put the blame for the team's failures on Phillips, but they ignore that Jason Garrett was making $ 3 million dollars to run the entire offense. Terrell Owens is Jerry's pet. He answers to Jerry. Is it any wonder, the Water Pistol and Greg Ellis ran to Jones?
The call for tossing Phillips aside for Jason Garrett to coach the team isn't right, and Jerry Jones knows it isn't fair. It looks like Garrett has an opportunity to be the future coach of the Cowboys if he can cash in. If and when that time ever comes, perhaps Phillips will stay and continue to coach the defense.
Good luck finding someone better.
