What happens with Tyron Smith?

A few big decisions to make and Tyron is an interesting one. Tackle salaries have gone up so much that his contract doesn't look that crazy comparing other tackles. However, he's still paid too much for an often injured player. I would see what the trade market looks like, but also think they could work out a restructure being most of the guaranteed money is off the books. I'm guessing they convert 5-7 million of his base, add another dummy year and he starts the season at LG or RT.
Isn’t it crazy to keep a guy who only plays once in a while? Do we actually believe there are not ANY good Tackles out there that can play all 17 for less than the millions we are paying TS?

Look, I totally respect Tyron Smith. He WAS a great player. But just don’t understand why so many think we have to keep him because we can’t do any better. A guy who has missed 44 games in 6 seasons.

There's still a lot of injury concerns with him

Steele has been solid at RT.

Tyler Smith is our LT of the future.

Is #77 back next year?

Making him a post June 1st cut would create 10 million in cap space.
I'd prefer that we keep him and play him at LT if he decides not to retire. We know that we can always kick Tyler back out to LT if needed, but we could go back to the plan of playing him at LG until Tyron's career ends and we'd probably be stronger for it.

I think it's likely that McGovern leaves in FA, so next man up right now is Farniok and I'm much more comfortable with Tyron and Tyler than Tyler and Farniok. If we decide to part ways with Tyron, then starting guard goes to the top of our draft list.

Wild card for me is Waletzko. We didn't get to see a lot of him in the preseason because of his injury, but I didn't like the bit that we saw. Keeping Tyron for another year gives us the chance to see if he can be a tackle option that would allow Tyler at guard.

I'm all for whatever combination gives us our best starting five, though.

Organization needs to be aggressive on finding his replacement inthe draft.

Woudn't mind using a top 3 draft pick on OL

I'd keep him, you can't find a player like him in fa or draft. I still want to see him at my with Tyler at guard.

I think they keep him. It's a loyalty thing. But also Steele may not be ready for the beginning of the season. So Tyron might start at RT in September. It also depends on what they do at LG. If they re-sign McGovern then when Steele comes back Tyron may be the odd man out, but I am betting they take their time bringing Steele back. Most likely Tyron will get hurt at some point so the problem gets solved that way. People say he is elite when healthy. He is never healthy. and he is no longer an elite run blocker. Get Steele back to what he was when he left and the Cowboys will run on anybody in the league, even the great 49ers.

If they don't sign McGovern then they may need to put Tyler at LG and Tyron at LT.

Then their are the other two young tackles Waletzko and Ball. Let's see what they look like after another offseason.

I think the bigger question is what to do with McGovern. He has a solid year at LG. He is only going to get better. Do they invest in him again? I think he is going to get at least $8 million per year in free agency. I think that is out of the Cowboys price range. If they let him go who takes his place? I want to keep Tyler Smith at LT. Do they use another 1st or 2nd round pick on OL again? Is Farniok an option? He was not as good as McGovern when he played. Maybe he gets stronger in the offseason too.

You mean we can’t find someone like we did last year? Tyler Smith?

Salary cap casualty.

Quit reliving the past. Time to move on.
Exactly. Unlike the Cooper trade, the team actually has prepared for this situation. Tyler is the LT, Steele is the RT, and Tyron is a cap casualty. This is a layup business decision that is the right thing to do.

Tyron showing his age and he is missing more games each year. Time to let him decide if he wants to play for another team or retire.

I thought Tyron was awful vs Washington but then played well vs TB and SF. If the money is right I'd like to see him return. I'd also like to see him retire a Cowboy.
that's what happens when you are not consistently playing.

His base salary is 13.6 million for next year. It was 13.5 million last year. If you are committed to winning last year doesn't happen. I would like to say that this year is never happening. Unfortunately we are not a professional football team. We are a football club and Tyron is inner circle so he probably gets to stay no matter what. After watching the last years of T Crawford I have come to realize that anything is possible no matter how insane.

Good thread. The cap space we save on both Zeke and Tyron could bring in a difference making defensive tackle. On the other hand we could keep Tyron at right tackle until Steele if fully healthy and we would have three quality tackles. I do think the Cowboys do need to move on from the old guard though. I am torn on this one.

With all the offensive coaching turnover, I expect an offensive driven draft. Which is to say I expect a T or G to be the goal between rnds 1-2. If that pans out it would be an easier decision to let Tyron go. Otherwise I can see JJ and co trying to keep him till his contract expires

Try to trade him- I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility either given the lack of OT’s across the nfl.

If not he needs to be cut. Respect the heck out of the man and everything he’s done…but time to move on

Thinking we need to keep Tyron Smith is exactly the kind of thinking that represents what this front office does way too much. Ty Smith was my favorite Cowboy from 2012-17. He was great! Emphasis on WAS.

Come on man, TS has missed 44 regular season games in 6 seasons. 44! Keeping a part time, injury prone T with a big contract because we think we can’t do better? We just drafted a great LT last year.

Tyron Smith was a great player whom I respect very much. But man that dude is DONE. And so are we if we keep doing this kind of stuff.
It’s incredible the bad luck we had with Frederick and Tyron’s injury history. OL typically have solid years into their 30s.
