Hard to say how much this mattered, but it definitely helped with popularity of the league.

2. Television
Without TV, in a radio only world, baseball would have remained more popular than football.

3. Free Agency
It's more negative than positive for the fans, but in general I don't think it changed much in terms of the overall popularity of the sport.

4. Instant Replay
It's evolutionary not revolutionary. They were doing fine without it.

5. NFL Films
Huge in terms of PR, but the league would have been fine with out without it.

6. Rule changes in the late 70's that took thugs out of uniforms
Hard to say. They players were evolving at about the same time. Randy White played DT at 257 pounds. Last year's starters were both over 300. Rayfield Wright played OT at 270 pounds. Now there are TEs that are bigger than that.

I think TV would have to be #1.

  • Smart phones
  • Fantasy football
  • Internet

This is an interesting poll by CC.

I would agree with LP on all the above when addressing the "modern" NFL and if I may add just one more - betting,

Whether it be traditional Vegas-style gambling, fantasy football or Draft Kings, the NFL has kept its base while engaging and capturing millennials with these things and as most companies know - that is awfully hard to do. The NFL will be printing money for a long, long time.

I'd say free agency and the salary cap by far. Ironically Jerry was a big pusher for the salary cap which came hand in hand with free agency and might have cost him a couple more championships.

Television and its huge contracts is the root of all evil. It lead to free agency so that big market teams can pillage small market teams of its stars. They took the thugs out when Roger took over the NFL. They liked that image, it was great for attracting advertisers.
That being said, I wouldn't change a thing except for :espn:!!

I would say fans. They want things faster and have huge alternative options. Its why NFL is trying to clean their image and spread coverage (thurs, sat, sun & mon football) to compete. It will also be fans who ultimately determine how much they care about concussions which could derail this whole thing. Success of modern NFL will hinge solely on how well NFL can keep pace with changing age demographics and nature of how they consume content.

In no particular order...

Equipment technology
Rule changes favoring the forward pass
TV Money
Jerry Jones... seriously check out his HOF credentials and realize he is so much more to the NFL than just the Cowboys Owner/GM.

depends on how you define "effects"

Is it how the game is played- then it is easily rule changes.

If It is popularity then TV hands down.

If it is quality of the game then it is a combination FA and Cap. This prevents building and just as importantly maintaining a real dynasty. The Pats teams that have won SBs would have been worked by qualitatively better teams like the Boys of the 90's. Nuts the Bill's of the 90's would have eaten current Patriot teams alive. You just cannot get the kind of talent on a team let alone keep it like we did in 1990's. If there had been no cap that 1992 team would have been around for at least another 5 years. As it was it began to degrade very quickly due to FA losses. Which were due to the Cap since we know Jerry would have spent what was necessary to keep that team together.
