What I Don't Understand About Cowboys Fans?

Well, as you can see, I've only registered to this board quite recently, however I did lurk as a guest for a considerable amount of time before joining. I'd like to 1st state that I've been a Cowboys fan since I was old enough to understand the game of football. I currently (and always have) lived in the Eastern part of our country. The area I'm in is specifically saturated with Eagles, Steelers, Commanders, Ravens, and Giants fans. All of my close friends are fans of one of these teams (which makes for an entertaining rivalry during the season) and I literally am rarely surrounded by Cowboys fans.

After reading a large amount of the content on this board, I really have one question I'd like to pose to all of the Jerry naysayers: Why are you a fan of the Dallas Cowboys?

The disdain for Jerry that some of the posters on this board exhibit really makes me wonder why you would even want to be a fan of the team? I mean, he's owned the team for over 20 years, and he is clearly going to continue to conduct himself the way that he has up until this point. With that being said, it's safe to say that he is probably the most recognizable individual connected to the organization. If as a fan, you disagree with his actions in general, and who he is as an owner, why wouldn't you just root for a team that operates in a fashion that you do agree with? To me, being a fan in general is about following and cheering for a team that you believe in, and that you want to see be successful. Some of the perpetually negative posters on here make me wonder- do you even enjoy watching the games? Do you cheer when the 'boys win?

Maybe I'm just weird, but it seems odd to me that some of the "fans" on here don't even appear to enjoy being a fan of the Cowboys. And isn't that the whole point? To enjoy the games? To enjoy the different facets of the organization? If I hated Jerry that much I don't think I'd have much fun as a fan.

Sorry if this was too long and drawn out, but I rarely post on message boards and I became quite perplexed after I started following this board and decided to make a thread about it. Thoughts?

You can expect some negative and positive feedback. I too do not understand why some people do not seem to even like the team they root for. I couldn't be that way with a gun to my head. Most of them are still very loyal fans, just happy to be unhappy it seems. I can't explain it any other way because I just don't understand it.

Jerry is a wonderful owner. It's his being a GM that makes a lot of people mad.

I suppose "happily unhappy" may actually be the best way to describe it; some people are just that way in general. I wonder if these types of fans are just that way in most areas of life.

Just seems to me like it wouldn't be that much fun to be a fan if you fall into this category. I'm not sure what you personally would consider a successful season, and we've certainly had disappointments the last few years, but even that dreadful year when Wade got canned I still watched every game and enjoyed the late season wins (even though they had little significance in regards to that season's final standings). And to me, that's the most enjoyable part of being a fan altogether; watching the games, cheering for my team, and enjoying the W's. And I don't think I could do that if I despised the individuals calling the shots.

Awesome another super fan post

I don't think I'd quite consider myself a super fan in the context you're meaning it in. I'm just trying to understand why some of the "fans" of the team even continue to be a fan, when it appears they are generally dissatisfied, disgusted, and even despise the front office of the organization.

So because you're a fan of the team that means you have to always think the arrow is pointing up and the status quo is great.

Now that's something I don't understand.

I think he's a horrible owner. I'd give up our next 5 1st round picks to be free of that family.

Hear hear. I want to see nothing but greatness coming from the Cowboys. When they miss the mark I think it's more than appropriate to criticize where it is due. I will do that because i love the team and want to see them be the greatest. Being a content fan of mediocre doesn't make you a better fan. Diehard Cowboys fans like myself expect nothing less than greatness from this club. We've seen them do it in the past, and know they can di it again. We're not Bengals fans.

That's the thing though....the organization most definitely will not be free of that family for the foreseeable future. Which makes me wonder, if you have this type of serious disdain for "that family", why are you rooting for the Cowboys at all? Wouldn't it be more enjoyable for someone such as yourself to just root for a team that has management that you do believe in?

So isn't that what a fan supposed to do....always think...this is the year.....

I can see being critical, questioning things, but at same time not to come across as a hateful fan. to read some posts, you come to the conclusion, that there is nothing these so called fans like about this team.

There are times to be very critical, like after a disappointing loss, just as it is to be positive after great win. But a TRUE fan remains positive. Even after making any critical remarks. I called for Ryan's head quite often last year, but I also can't wait to see how they will improve under him this year. To finally have that feared defense we been waiting for.

How can a horrible owner bring you 3 SB's in 4 years. Yes it's been a long time, but it has for most other teams as well. Are they horrible owners too?

Your reasoning is way off base. As if this ever did happen, would you complain about the next owner as well.

He brought the Cowboys their new stadium, has made a ton of great business deals, and is more than willing to spend whatever players are needed to help the team. Jerry is great as an owner. It's his being a GM is where he fails. He needs to let those better at it just do their work.

Expect to remain perplexed forever. Some elements of human nature will never be rationalized. We are very complex beings, albeit from a HUMAN perspective. :)

Your whole post reeks of stuck up *****yness if the point of your post was not to show us what an awesome fan you are then what is it?

I really agree with the above statements and like this line of thinking. To me, this illustrates a true fan- recognizing the faults of the team, but at the same time remaining a supporter. Coming across as perpetually negative makes it seem like it's not even enjoyable.
