Whether this team is the 5th seed or somehow miraculously earns the division title and the 1 or 2 seed- I want this team to exhibit a list of qualities that consistently show they can win some games in the playoffs.
This list is simple but it is not common. Only the best teams capture these qualities:
1. Mental Toughness- the ability to overcome mistakes, bad calls, being behind and refusing to accept defeat no matter what. Mental toughness has been missing from this team for far too long. Mental toughness is a quality ALL champions have.
2. Physical Toughness- being able to match or exceed the physical toughness of your opponent. Being able to take it to your opponent or counter-punch their physicality. (Last year the niners were just physically tougher and we couldn’t answer it)
3. Being Fundamentally Sound- the teams who win playoff games are always fundamentally sound. Being good at the core football fundamentals: Blocking and tackling. The teams winning playoff games almost always win the line of scrimmage and tackle well.
Quite simply- if the Cowboys can show us they are mentally and physically tough and can be fundamentally sound they are capable of a deep playoff run. We have enough talent. But without the above qualities, it doesn’t matter how talented you are, an early exit looms. We have 27 years of evidence.
It’s time for this team to prove it.
I’m not that surprised at the stinker these guys laid today.
There have been multiple reports throughout the season (Cowboys podcast) alluding to players on this squad being stat chaser/me first guys. One specific example is defensive personnel getting torqued a not getting credit for a sack when they thought they should. The act of celebrating a small victory by a teammate within the framework of the game was replaced with, “Me, it was me – not him!”
When players of that ilk come into a game that they believe is being rendered meaningless due to the Giants admission of resting their starters, they are likely inclined to
not put forth max. effort. I guess this means we can’t put a pretty little check mark in the
Mental Toughness box.
To wrap this up quick, I’ll just say that we are getting further away from displaying
Physical Toughness and being
Fundamentally Sound. I would fear for our players if they were to line-up across from the Niners at Levi’s Stadium next week.
The carrot will be back in front of this team next week so expect a much better performance. That’s how they roll.
Can compete with almost anyone yet can lose to worst the league has to offer.
