Serious question, what is up with all of the Wentz love around here? What did I miss?

Because he isn't a system spread off. Qb....increases mathematical odds of success exponentially

He can make any throw. He has a great release. Great pocket presence and makes good decisions under duress. Extremely intelligent and has an insane work ethic. Changes plays at the line and can read a defense.

I loved watching his tape. The ball just flies out of his hand so effortlessly. Now, he does have some issues. I saw a few instances where he locked onto a read, or pre determined a pass. I think a lot of that had to do with ND State's offense, because they employed a lot of designed QB runs too that don't work in the NFL. Of course, the biggest knock on him is that he went to a small school. I feel like if he went to Stanford, or Cal, or USC, Auburn... people would be loving this kid. He was 5'8, 125 in HS, so he went underecruited.

And he's not really ranked that low. CBS sports draft board has him as a 1-2 round pick, and once the Senior Bowl and combine roll around, I assume his stock will raise. I have watched all the tape available on Goff, Wentz, Lynch and Cook. I like them all in that order, with Goff and Wentz having the most potential.

You can watch Carson Wentz tape here and read DanTheMan, our local scout's review of him here.

Wow thanks for the thorough reply!

While I agree that he's an entriguing prospect, he is definitely being overrated on this board imo. He's still not considered a top 30 prospect by most counting boards and he's coming off a year where he missed the majority of the season due to injury. Has only started for 2 years at SDSU. Has been inconsistent with his accuracy and he locks onto receivers too much. There's still a lot of questions surrounding him.

Like I said, he's an enticing prospect, no doubt, and I think the Cowboys will definitely be watching him closely at the Senior Bowl, combine, and Pro-Day. He's got the physical tools to be a franchise QB, and from everything I've read, he's a really bright kid. But as of right now, he's not worthy of a top 20 pick imvho, let alone a top 10 one like some on this board believe.

If the two QB's really are potentially franchise players, there is the possibility that 1) Cleveland drafts one of them, and 2) the 49ers trade up to get the other. Should this happen, what would you like us to do?

My initial thoughts

1) take BPA (Tunsil as your RT? or more likely Bosa)
2) trade down even if it's a buyers market and look for a guy like Wentz, or Elliott
3) Take another player (Ramsey, Treadwell, Hargreaves, Jack, Stanley)

I would never draft a RT in the top 5. And there is more than 2 QB's in this draft.

Take BOSA in that scenario...............Tenn takes Tunsil to protect Marriotta and Cleveland and SF take the two QBs.

Walking away with the best defensive player in this draft would be sweet.:oldcouple:

Good arm. A lot of tape throwing to receivers who are covered. Runs well. Can cut. 4.0 GPA. Would be the No. 1 pick, IMO, if he had been his present height in high school (had a late growth spurt).

Carson Wentz, QB Projected Ranking
Overall Position Proj. Rnd.
35 4 th 1-2

While generally level of competition is a concern when evaluating quarterbacks, I don’t see any problems with this player. He has played well against FBS schools and won a FCS National Championship last year. He consistently shows poise and leadership and is in total command on the field.

While there will be a learning curve when he gets to the NFL, I can still see him becoming a starter very early in his career. The upside is he will develop into a quality starter. He has more talent than Jimmy Garoppolo from the 2014 draft and should get drafted higher. From what I have seen to date, I would have no problem pulling the trigger on this player in the first round.

Wow! That's a big growth spurt!

Also, I wouldn't worry about a college quarterback staring down receivers. Even the best quarterbacks (Peyton, Cam, Aikman, Elway) did that early in their professional careers.

If you have nerves of steel in the pocket and you have the talent to where the game slows down for you the more experience you get, you can be taught to look off receivers.

And my prediction is that Wentz doesn't make it past pick #15.

I feel like the cowboys are going to narrow down their first pick to Jack, Ramsey and Goff. With your scenario it comes down to either Ramsey or Jack. I like Treadwell and think he would be awesome across from Dez but he sort of creates a log jam at receiver. Cole Beasley just got a new contract so in essence if you select Treadwell your giving up on Terrance Williams. Now depending on what happens with Carr, Claiborne and McClain this off season will sway the cowboys selection. Lately on defense it looks like the cowboys like players that can play and easily transition between multiple positions like Byron Jones or Arizona's Deone Bucannon. Both players fill that role as their both phenomenal athletes. I personally would love to see Lee and Jack flowing sideline to sideline but either player is going to help the cowboys.

Trade down and see if you can pick up an additional 2nd. If you can't get that you draft Jack or Nkemdiche. My dream scenario would be you trade down to the middle of the first and pick up another 2nd. You then draft Ezekiel Elliot with your first and you pick Jaylon Smith who slides into the 2nd because of his knee injury.

If both QBs are gone at the 4 spot. You take either one of two players

Offense: Laquan Treadwell Defense: A'shawn Robinson

Treadwell: along with Dez will cause NFL secondaries to play honest and can't shade a safety over top...

Robinson: is a space eater and will command double teams once he gets his feet wet in this league. Our Defensive ends along with Sean Lee will feast with this addition. Also another tidbit, Robinson has lost a lot of bad weight going into his Junior year and its playing off dividends..
