What If DAL Would've Cut Tony Romo In 2004?

In 2004, Tony Romo was on the roster bubble and was looking very much like he was going to be cut. Romo was erratic, inaccurate and looked like what an undrafted rookie free agent should look like in camp.

The Dallas Cowboys opened camp with Quincy Carter as their starter, who had just led the team to an unexpected 10-6 finish in 2003. The Cowboys made it to the playoffs, and Carter impressed as he threw for over 3,300 yards and 17 touchdowns to go along with 257 rushing yards and two scores. Carter was just starting to figure things out and nobody knew for sure what his ceiling was in Dallas.

Behind Carter was veteran Vinny Testaverde who was expected to help Carter in practice and in the film room. The Cowboys liked Testaverde a lot as a backup, but never expected him to play. But the player the Cowboys were most excited about was former Michigan quarterback Drew Henson. Henson backed up Tom Brady at Michigan and excelled in 2000 when he threw for 2,416 yards along with 18 touchdowns to only four interceptions.

Not even close. On or off the field.

I think the Cowboys would've signed Jake Delhome before he signed with Carolina. Parcells talked about how they were close to signing Delhome in 03 or 04 as a free agent but he wanted too much money and they moved on. Probably was the same year they signed Vinny as the backup to Quincy. If Vinny doesn't get cut by the Jets maybe they come to an agreement with Delhome.

Go look at his 2003 season. Wasn't great, but it was his best. Was the QB of a team that went 10-6.

So. He had a 57.8% completion rating, and a 71.4% QB rating. And his td to touchdown ratio was 17-21. Not exactly figuring things out.

The Panthers signed Delhomme in 2003. Romo getting cut in 2004 would not have impacted that move.

They didn't pass on Rodgers because of Tony Romo. They passed on him because they thought Bledsoe was the answer. Nothing changes.

Yea, but they obviously liked romo as a long term option, hense not trading him to New Orleans the following year, even though he still hadn't played. Had we passed on Rogers at 20, just because of Bledsoe, then my God Parcells was dumb.

Yep. You've seen Back to the Future. Disrupting the time line can create a paradox the results of which could cause a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space time continuum and destroy the entire universe.

Granted, that's a worse case scenario. The destruction might in fact be very localized, limited to merely our own galaxy.

LOL right. We also could've drafted Brandon Weeden with our 1st round pick as well lol.

What if we had drafted Aaron Rodgers over Marcus Spears?

Most likely he would have been thrown into the fire right away. We didn't have a Favre for him to sit behind and soak up everything. Who knows what would have happened. Hindsight is always 20/20. So many teams passed on Rodgers for whatever reason. Niners was supposed to get him but they took Alex Smith instead.

He was expected to be the #1 pick overall by SF but in the week before the draft starting sliding due to concerns about his athleticism...

I always thought he was pretty agile in the pocket at Cal. Yeah he was not a Vick or anyone like that but he could always avoid pressure when he needed to. Same as Romo.

Wow.
Now that is horrid.

In other words, the team did ok that year totally in spite of how bad the QB stunk.
