Did it ever occur to you that the SD losing Phillips was the final straw in the decision to fire Marty? They may have figured "well he's lost both coordinators now and he's a lame duck as it is might as well snuff him"? And that if Phillips had stayed that might have been just enough reason to keep the status quo there? I do.

I would much rather have Wade Phillips than Marty Schottenheimer. We got the better deal out of this one. In fact if we had waited another week then the Chargers would likely have made Phillips their HC and we would have missed out.

obviously he hasnt had as many chances...do you honestly think Phillips would be 5-13 too?...and at least one of Phillip's losses can be written off as a fluke

The final straw, according to SD insiders is that AJ Smith wanted Ted Cottrell brought in as DC. Marty refused and set out to hire his own brother. That was the end...

If Phillips was still there, Marty would likely have been as well...

I think Cottrell may very well be their next HC now...

Too bad JJ didn't know last week that Marty would have became available this week. While Marty's postseaon record 0f 5-13 is certainly piss poor, it certainly is better than Wade's 0-3 postseason record. In addition, Marty has at least proven he can win at the head coaching position on a consistant basis, something Wade is still trying to accomplish.
If given the choice between Norval, Wade, and Marty the decision would have been a no-brainer as to which way to go.

Since the top assistants who would have been great candidates for the coordinator jobs were hired away, then the decision became whether to keep Marty and let him hire his brother as DC. That wasn't happening. The Charger Front Office will now have to pull a rabitt out of their hats.
