What if we actually paid our players early instead of waiting?

What would be different?

What would we do with the extra money??

What would stop said player several years into the contract from asking for MORE money and most likely holding out???

It's a slippery slope with so much money being tied up in these contracts. I wish there was an easier way, please give your thoughts!

I think that would go against the CBA, and really mess things up.
Once one player wants a new contract after 2 years, and would get it (if permitted) then other will also.

It will destroy the integrity of the salary cap.

There will be no extra money.

You can’t even do it until after year three, at which time a non first round pick may as well wait to hit FA.

I said this yesterday…..that savings would in no way be spent on outside savior free agents.

The difference is maybe being able to keep a guy like Biadasz, and Jerry would rather have the attention that’s goes along with it, so it gets dragged out and milked.

The savings don’t matter to him, and would make a minimal difference on the field.

With the way the market is being reset every season, and money with gambling and TV/streaming deals being out the roof, why should it matter?????

Players would be under contract faster.

What would be different?
Players would not be waiting for new contracts.

Hopefully using it to sign the best available free agents.

Nothing.

It's not to hard to figure out Coog. Just look at the millions Jerry could have saved if he had signed Lamb, Prescott and Parsons asap.
that's my point, but what stops them from asking for more money. Ok (for example) years ago we could have gotten Dak for let's say 20 million, but over the last 3 years it's jumped to 35 million with the market being reset. Dak is making 20 million and he's had a BETTER or close season to the player making 35 million. You've seen how this works, he's going to ask for more money because he's being underpaid. NOW does it mean that the team has to honor that request, no because the player needs to honor their contract. In the end the player can sit out in hopes to get more money, it works and sometimes it doesn't! More so than not!

The CBA states the players get a percentage of that under the salary cap. The league minimum goes up every year.
However, the rest is not always distributed evenly, as we all know way too well.

We know Jerry's style, it will not change a thing. He will cave and overpay at the last minute. As if there is zero forethought of how to fix the issues.
It is like paying a bill at the last minute before the late fees hit. Oh, guess what, they paid the late fees when they did not need to.

It would not matter ....... they would just have more cap room to pay the wrong players.

As long as Jerry and his merry band of yes men are choosing the players ....... it does not matter how much "cap" they have.

Remember a couple of seasons ago we could have signed Dak during the year to $35 million per? Yeah good times…..
And remember a few seasons even before that, we did not have Dak and times would be tons better today.

What might be different?
For positions where the market continues to reset upward, it likely costs money.
For positions where the market stays relatively flat, likely not much.

The flip side is that in some cases, you may be resigning to a bigger contract based on a single year’s performance or projected potential that may or may not play out.

What might we do with the extra money?
It depends. For a player coming off a rookie deal, we would likely spend more money initially. For a person like Parsons who would have a lower initial cap hit, it seems like how we use our money has been pretty well documented.

What might stop the player from holding out?
In theory, nothing. Most everything in life has a risk, reward.

yeah it's late fees for a reason you KNOW you had to pay it and could have paid it earlier!!

yeah and he goes out and has that one good season and bam he wants 43 million! We're stuck either way lol

Not only does it save money on total contract value and AAV, but it gives you more flexibility when you're ready to move on from the contract. Plus, if you ran the Cowboys like a normal team, that would have provided a lot more for FA (but we all know the Joneses don't operate like that).

Dak has clearly been the most mismanaged player in the history of the franchise. It all started when the Cowboys decided to tag him. It's been straight downhill since then. Now look at the hell hole we're in.

Very true if the player doesn’t live up to the contract. On the flip side, if the player lives up to or exceeds the contract, you are one step closer to the next big payday. It’s all part of the cap management and evaluation equation which Jerry & Co. are not great at.

And as @big dog cowboy said, the management of Dak’s contract IMO has been terrible.
