What IF we had gotten Mark Brunell instead?

Brunell can scramble, we may have won 3 more games in my opinion.

We also would have won three more games with a legitimate kicker. Brunell is horrible when you can get to him, and hit him consistently. He is not durable. And that's what a QB playing behind our line needs more than anything, durability. If Brunell isn't quite right, he is awful.

The reason that the Commanders went 5-0 at the end of the season ....and the reason the Cowboys went 1-4 at the end of the season..... is not due to the QB's.

The reason is the running game.

The Commanders were able to run the ball. And they did not allow the opposing defense to dictate wether they passed or ran. They simply manned up and ran the ball with great success. Something that the cowboys were only able to do in the 1 win against Carolina.

IMO....Brunell's success....and Bledsoes lack of success.....was mostly due to the success (and lack thereof) in the respective running games.

And I think that the success of the running games had to do with 3 things. And I have listed them in order of importance.

(1) The OL. The Commanders offensive line is heads and tails above the talent level of our OL at the end of the season.
(2) Scheme - I believe that Gibbs offensive scheme is more sound than Parcells....especially when it comes to running the ball. It is no coincidence that Gibbs is now having the same success running the ball, with the same scheme, that he did in the past.
(3) Portis is a better back than JJ at this point in time. I do believe that JJ was dealing with some mental issues this season...especially following the ankle injury. Parcells stated that JJ had been running in practice the same way we saw him run against Carolina. But for some reason he was not running like that in the games prior to Carolina.

We obviously need to upgrade our OL unit next year. IMO...none of the guys who started in the last game are keepers....including Allen. The entire line needs to be revamped.

I reserve total judgement on the "scheme" until I see a running game that has a respectable offensive line.

I also believe that next year, with an upgraded line, we would mostly see the JJ that we saw against Carolina.

I just thought I would bump true genius to the top oif the heap for one more go around.

Mike, you have made more sense with less words than anyone I have read since Sunday.

Brunell wouldn't have been able to do anymore than Drew did behind that line.

As for Leftwich if we had gotten him we'd be saying boy I wish we had drafted Newman because our cb's would still suck.

The Leftwich question was posed above....I was a huge Leftwich homer when he came out, and was disappointed we selected Newman over the player whom I believed to be a sure-thing franchise quarterback.

He's been pretty solid and has his team in the playoffs, but his durability is a major concern to me. He's still a young man, yet can't stay healthy. If he was here -- especially behind this offensive line -- I'm not sure how long he would be lasting. He's already missed, I believe, 8 games in three seasons, missing the most this year (5).

Julius' durability has been one of his biggest weaknesses, and I think the ability to stay healthy is a measuring stick given to a lot of young players. So far, Leftwich isn't passing that test with flying colors.

My concern would be that, as he continues to get older, will his body wear down even more potentially leading to his skills more quickly eroding?

As for Brunell, call me jaded, but I think Santana Moss's presence has really made him this year. Moss has been the league's best receiver this side of Steve Smith. Brunell seems to struggle with accuracy on a weekly basis, but always bails himself out by heaving it deep -- which he does an excellent job of, since he throws a great deep ball.

Terry Glenn is a nice receiver, but he doesn't have Moss' raw speed and knack for adjusting to the deep ball IMO. Glenn doesn't appear to me as the sort of receiver to bail a quarterback out and Moss, despite his size, can do that. I think if Brunell were here, we'd be seeing last year's version on a more consistent basis given what we have at receiver.

We wouldn't be any better- retreads suck- he's not the reason Washington won 10 games this year- they have a good OL, a great RB, a good whatever the heck Cooley is, and a really good WR not to mention a good, solid defense.

Mike, I'm not saying that Leftwich isn't any good or that he doesn't have his best years ahead of him (as a matter of fact, I believe he will be great). The problem is that if he were on this team, he would spend more time on his back than throwing passes. The O-line is just horrible right now.

Good Point!!!

I guess I was assuming we dont make the bad OL decision we have.

Brunnell cost the Commanders a 3rd round draft pick and a 4 year, $30 million dollar contract with a 10.5 SB. So for anyone wanting Brunnell, I have to ask how much were you willing to go to outbid the Commanders for his services? A 2nd round draft choice?

Lefty's overrated status aside, The Cowboys didn't draft Leftwhich because Jerry wanted Parcells to "evaluate" the Qb's he had on roster. He thought he had seen something in Hutchinson when he threw him out there as a rookie "to see what he could do". Not without reason. Hutchinson had some pretty good games. Including a 300 yard game with a 100+ QB rating in a game against the Jaguars. Turns out what he thought he saw simply was not there, or not sustainable over the long haul with any consistency. It cost us Delhomme and/or Leftwhich. Amazingly, people still openly champion that protocol of QB evaluation today.

I get so sick of these posts!! Drew Bledsoe did an outstanding job this season, and he is the guy I want to lead the Cowboys back to glory! I just don't understand some of you. You expect the guy to NEVER make a mistake, when every one of you would be pissing down his leg if he had to endure what Bledsoe had to this year. To be sacked more times than every other QB in the NFL besides David Carr, and still put up better numbers than almost any QB in Cowboys history is amazing to me.

And don't give me that "holds the ball to long" crap either. Julius Jones only had forty some yards to go for a thousand yard season, and the fricking line couldn't even get him that. I LOVE the way Bledsoe plays. There is hardly a QB alive who can zip the ball in or show touch the way he does. Over & over this year, I heard announcers rave about his skills, and how he can still throw every type of pass with precision, if given enough time.

So, please quit blaming one guy for the Cowboys not getting to the playoffs. If not for Bledsoe, we would have been out of it a long time ago.

I don't think the results would have been much different. Brunell would have made less of both big plays and big mistakes for the Cowboys, so that pretty much evens out. At this stage in his career, what Brunell is, is a guy who plays steady and throws the ball away a lot. Despite what some of you said, he can still scramble, although certainly not like he did during the 90's in Jacksonville.

I’d say that Brunell has made about 10 very key runs this year, a few of which have been game-savers. I haven’t watched more than about 5 Cowboys games this year but I am willing to bet dollars to donuts that Bledsoe has less than half that. I can’t remember one in the games I saw.

OK, this ISN'T another anti-Bledsoe thread, however...

Remember a couple of years ago, Jerry and Bill thought about trading for him too.

Anyhow-IF we had, there would be thousands of anti-Brunell threads here, etc. And you know it.

Pt being that our coaching has been the ultimate undoing here.

Brunell sucks period!!!

Brunnell would not have lasted half the season with the hits Bledsoe took. He is fragile-FACT.
